Series S has 512gb SSD, with smart delivery, does it matter?

Me? It was said by Sony or Cerny that they go with 12 lanes to cut costs in memory chips.
It is cheaper to archive 5.5GB/s with 12 lanes.

MS just need to archive 2.4GB/s so that is why they are using slower chips.
I don't recall sony or cerny saying that. Where did that happen? More lanes actually makes it more difficult to layout traces on the motherboard.

Thank you for the reply.

1) Will i be able to choose a 4k download though? I'm assuming the XSS can run 4k@30fps or whatever (the XoX can) or am i forced to download one specific 'type'?

2) That's good to hear

3) Which platform is the lead platform then? XSS lead with games upscaled to XSX or XSX lead with games downscaled to XSS?
1) Even if the game is capable of running at 4K@30fps, that's not the spec target for this device. Remember, the GPU on this isn't quite up to the Xbox One X specs (4TF vs 6TF) so you can't assume that if the One X can play it at 4K that this can too. Barring that, it'll probably be largely left up to the developers on a per-game basis. Think of the current tradeoff on PS4 Pro or XoX games: do you want 1080p@60fps, or 4K@30fps? If the game could support either, I don't see why it wouldn't work but again this system isn't being designed around 4K performance.

3) Again this is probably on a game by game basis. Likely the Series X is the build target for the vast majority of games, and Microsoft's API handles downscaling assets and such to have build targets optimized for Series S. I'm basing this on screenshots I've seen from developers, and also the fact that it's easier to scale graphics down (where you lose visual fidelity) than it is to scale graphics up (where visual fidelity has to be added). One requires an algorithm, the other requires artificial intelligence.

Fair points, but the 6tf of the X1X is lower in power than the 4tf of the XSS. 4TF RDNA (XS) is ~8TF GCN (X1X)

It makes sense to put everything in a game, then take out the bits you don't want, vs making a game, then adding stuff.

We can look at the available NAND flash parts and construct something with optimal price performance. Someone constructing an M.2 drive presumably does not have that freedom, it would be difficult to market and sell if it were not one of those standard sizes," Mark Cerny says.

And it makes sense if they wish to archive 5.5GB/s with less lanes then they had to use high expensive NAND modules... while 12 lanes allowed them to reach 5.5GB/s using low cost NAND modules.

For 5.5GB/s with 12 lanes you need NAND modules to reach about 460MB/s speeds.
For 5.5GB/s with 4 lanes you need NAND madules to reach with about 1375MB/s speeds (to be fair I don't know if it is possible to reach 5.5GB/s with 4 lanes).

People bringing 12 vs 4 again, I am obligated to post this(read the Microsoft Translate version, it seems to handle Mandarin better).

Anything under a terabyte for digital only consoles is laughable imo. Though I do realize they only put 512gig to likely keep the cost down.

So tech NeoGAF: Is the Series S basically the X series but only targeting 1080p? Will it be "as powerful" as the Series X?

I really hope that game sizes shrink due to the benefits provided by SSD's being standard. But I think we all know deep down that even a true TB will be far too little after a fairly short time frame.

Hey I appreciate the discussion but can we take the ps5 talk to another thread.

Yes it matters because it's simply not enough storage space for downloaded games on a download-only game console.

U speak like texture pack is the whole game and since xss is getting half resolution fike size will be half. There R light engines, geometry, ai ,etc.. so a 4k game is not double size of 2k game . Ofcourse the actual size depends on engine but u r doing it wrong

Thanks for reading the op............... The question that was put forth was would you be able to install the same amount of games on a series S as a series x if Microsoft's smart deliveries claim is true. Will MS smart delivery allow for smaller game installs on series s vs x?

Yes, but XSS is not claiming to have games at 2k. XSS would be shooting for 1080p up to 1440p. Would that be half the size, 60% the size? They also mention the ML upsampling which indicates they will be using lower res assets. I don't think I'm doing it wrong as I'm speculating. I realize that there's always going to be exceptions.

It's a pointless discussion. All we know is the name of the tech and some basics on how it's going to work. Nobody here has a crystal ball.

As for what I think: no. It's not going to work well. Only a small amount of games will support it, and those that do will not support it properly. Same as the current-generation's play-during-download crap. It rarely works.

Dude, it's a video game forum, it's all pointless discussion. Regarding play during download feature, I would say I used to not have very good experiences with it in the past, but over the past few years it seems to work as intended on both PlayStation and Xbox.

That'll be enough for one cod yearly release and one other game. People are gonna spend $300 on the console then spend another $150 to upgrade the storage. Microsoft is gonna be laughing all the way to the bank.

No doubt about that, Microsoft can't wait for you to fill that SSD up. Imagine if you could go back in time and tell your younger self playing on a PlayStation 2 that one day you were going to fit the entirety of your games on a memory card. And by the way that memory card is $150.
