(serious) Utterly awful thing I saw today

That must be pretty disturbing to witness, sorry OP.
It's a shame that some people who decide to take their lives end up doing it in such a public way.

It's fast, has a high mortality rate, and it's almost impossible to stop someone about to do it unless you know they're planning it beforehand. As far as pain goes this seems like it would be one of the most preferable methods. The only downside is inflicting trauma on other people.

yeah, really don't know about that.

wasn't there a video on liveleak a while back, where someone got split into 2 parts by a train and still lived?
people pulled him from the tracks, but he did shortly after.

That sucks man I've seen the aftermath of a train hit a person... I also know that its quite common, train drivers have it happen to them on a yearly basis

I saw someone I know hurt himself and well it took some weeks to not think about... Get out of the house and sleep a lot

Yeah that's crazy man. And it sucks that people reach the point to commit suicide, especially in manners such as this. I hope that whatever awaits after death though, that the woman is finally at peace and doesn't have to suffer any more..

Witnessing a person commit suicide is a heavy thing. Its something that can really traumatize people even if you didnt know the person, all the rushing emotions, grief you feel suddenly all at once.
Even afterwords you feel like shit for even thinking about how badly it effected you so you think you're being selfish.

my best friend committed suicide right in front of me.

No one should have to witness such a thing.

UK, near London.

I hope you're ok, what a sad thing to witness. Unfortunately it is really common near London, it has happened to a fair few friends of mine whilst they were at train stations.

I think the most horrific thing was once my train out of London was stopped due to such an incident and people were actually complaining about it, completely cold hearted not even thinking about how awful it was that someone felt that this was their last resort. Just sat there complaining about the time :(

don't forget the train driver in all of this - imagine his view and not being able to do anything about it

Someone i follow on twitter was in the front carriage of a train when someone jumped in front of one a couple of years back. He said he could hear the driver crying from the other side of the door. I know people don't think straight when they're that fucked up, but if you're gonna do it, there's plenty of ways which don't give other people nightmares for the rest of their life.

Seen a couple of this ones in my adult life.

They actually kinda scarr you.

Then you get desensitized.

And that is when you realize it's a stupid way to go.

murder doesn't count!

sorry you had to see that OP.

edit: had no intention of being a dick. :(

Hahaha. It was just really unfortunate timing seeing two separate fatal car accidents.

The first one, the guy's body came out of the driver's side window right before the car rolled over him. The other was a motorcyclist decapitated on the freeway. Not sure how he lost his head but I drove right by it before CHP arrived.

This is pretty common in Edinburgh too, people jump off the bridges onto the lines below. My colleagues that come in by train always complain that it's made them late.
I mean it doesn't phase me either (unless I know the people involved) but I don't have the gall to complain when someone offs themselves. Have some respect.

Some guy died once in the middle of my city. Not the same, but still pretty horrible. I went into the shop to buy some sweeties, and when I came out, he was dead. He was old though, so I guess it wasn't out of the ordinary. Everyone was so... Apathetic, though. No care or sympathy for him. Just something for them to focus on. An interesting part of their day. Kinda sad. No wonder no-one intervenes in those videos of people getting beaten up or whatever. They just don't care, really.

That said, in regards to suicide... Well, I tried it once. I'm currently glad that I wasn't successful. If anyone's reading this and feels depressed or suicidal, do not hesitate to speak out, OK? A suicide's a tragedy; your death would be a tragedy, and it's best that you speak out about it. Takes a bit of bravery, but action is better than hope. Besides, I won't bite, so... Yeah. PM me if you want to.

Nasty. It seems like it would be best to try and go for a decapitation then. Maybe OD on sleeping pills so you don't wind up pulling your neck off the tracks at the last second.

I need to try and sleep now but please remember depression can be controlled and beaten.

If you're suicidal, in the UK you can call the Samaritans )http://www.samaritans.org/), hopefully a US gaffer can post their equivalent?

Thanks all & happy dreams.

Not that easy to OD. It's can be very traumatic
I've tried with a combination of alcohol, antidepressants and sleeping pills. It was painful and had really bad seizures that didn't let me sleep for days. The shaking and brain zaps continued for days.

Similar to Stephen Fry's experience.

Hmm, it seems really hard to kill yourself both without a gun and without traumatizing other people.

Wow you seem to be really affected by this. I happened to saw it once, a women who jumped in front of a metro train, didn't affect me one bit (well besides the train delay). I always respect people's choice with their lives, moving along.

But yes, more than half survive with heavy physical/brain damage.

I remember a few months back there were no trains going to Leagrave station in Luton due to a suicide and the railway arranged a coach to take people there. People were complaining that they were going to be late home, smh.

Yeah - here it was

Almost witnessed something like that two weeks ago. I arrived at the station early and went for a smoke on platform 1, they announced that a train would drive straight through on platform 2 and to stay back. Suddenly a guy walks up to the edge of the platform and put his arms and head out. I didn't think much of it at first and just stood there smoking until a security guard ran up to him and pulled him back. He was pretty drunk and obviously confused the platform. As soon as the train came through he started sobbing like a motherfucker.

From what I hear these things are really common. Most city's transit systems have a few jumpers every year.. They just don't advertise it all that much.

Some systems do have these:

Probably the only thing the ended up stopping me at my absolute worst was this. I was traumatized myself and I didn't want to make others feel how I felt.

Having seen pictures of the remains of someone hit by a train I can't fathom anyone wanting to die like that. Practically, I would imagine it is fairly easy to botch and end up with amputations rather than being dead.

I feel for you man. One of my soldiers hung himself in our hangar. Had to cut him down and give him mouth to mouth for almost 20 mins knowing he was dead while we waited for the emts.

It is a particularly selfish method of killing yourself, but not many options for people in some locations that are determined to end it.

If I ever witnessed something like that I might had broke down. I would had to discuss it with a shrimp or something. It would surely eat me away slowly. Dunno I would probably arrange so meeting with a psychiatrist just in case.

Damn. My heart goes out to everyone involved: the woman, the train driver, and of course you and your wife, OP. Kudos for handling it so well and trying to raise awareness, but do look after yourself as well.

OP, that was a horrible thing to have seen.

My sister was a paramedic and dealt with many unpleasent things from suicides and road accidents to babies dying etc. Counselling was always available to her and I would suggest to anyone who is troubled by a traumatic event to speak to a professional.

A teacher at my seniors school killed himself in front of about a hundred students one morning by hanging himself from a bridge right next to the school. I know that if you are intent on ending your life then you aren’t thinking straight anyway, but there must be more considerate ways to kill yourself.

I work for the ambulance service and suicides are a regular occurrence. The vast majority of them are done at home or in private and sometimes they will even call the Samaritans and give them the address to report it to the police to save a family member having to discover them.

I'm sorry you had to witness that OP. I just had a graphic dream involving suicide and I woke up in tears. It's not comparable, but I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry.

Horrible thing to witness. I live South of London (near Portsmouth) and there has been an increase in train suicides over the past few weeks. Bad times in the UK :(

I can't even imagine what watching someone kill themselves must be like. I hope that you and your wife are able to get any help that you may need. Disturbing events like this can have a lasting effect.

I saw a girl standing on a stairwell six stories up at my campus. I thought there was no way she would jump and went to class. After class I walked past the building on my way to my dorm and was greeted by police tape with a large pool of blood staining the ground. I couldn't fucking believe I had been so insensitive and naive to the problems people suffer from. You read about suicides but the reality of it never set in until that moment. I can't imagine seeing the event.

One of my best friends killed himself like that a few years ago, not at a station though. He was 19 years old.
Can't imagine what it must be like to witness something like this.

I have seen two people in my life who had killed themselves by jumping off a building. One of them was my brother. You don't forget that shit. Hope you'll cope OP.

Saw this recently in Shanghai. Seemed at odds with the bonkers pedestrian, scooter, bicycle and car shenanigans going on at street level.
Yeah, traffic laws in those places and Europe is worse than like California as the pedestrian reserves the right of way.
