Seth MacFarlane Says His Harvey Weinstein Oscars Joke Had Venom In It

Seth MacFarlane has put out some vile shit. There are enough rape jokes in Family Guy to make your skin peel off.

This is a good thing that he's done. That's all I have to say that's relevant to the thread.

I've posted a bunch of links in my posts above. I think they speak for themselves.

Oh, they do.

By which I mean you're trying to derail this thread. And your sole logic is "Seth isn't as great as y'all think." Which, okay, that doesn't cancel out him throwing a barb at Harvey Weinstein.

Which is the point of this thread.

So you posting stuff about Seth singing a stupid and inappropriate song just screams "please divert attention away from Harvey." Which is really fucked up, especially as you aren't discussing the topic of this thread at all.

Screams in Silence is Family Guy at its worst.

The topic of this thread is a rebuttal to the initial narrative that MacFarlane was playing off sexual assault for laughs. Proof that he knew all about it yet said and did nothing.

His statement was an attempt to reframe his joke as a "venomous" shot at Weinstein, sticking up for his friend and other women who had been assaulted.

The boob song is absolutely pertinent to the veracity of his recent comments and his motivation for the initial joke.

Attempting to shut it down as "diverting attention from Harvey" is completely disengenuous.

The only thing I see here is that you have absolutely no sense of humor.

In all honesty, I thought it was pertinent to point out the mans hypocricy. If the thread is only open to comments about how awesome Seth McFarlane is, I apologize. I genuinely didn't think I was derailing the thread.

Regarding the sense of humor part, you are probably right. I found all of his jokes horrible that night and if appreciating them is the standard of a good sense of humor then I definitely fail.

Ummmm yea really. Did you see the reactions? You actually think this Is good comedy? Can’t tell because “Really?” isnt much of a response.

That bit is so deamining to artists and so clearly straight up sexist that I honestly can’t imagine it has defenders. It’s gross. Though I guess props to him for throwing veiled shade?

How?

Yeah, I did see those pre-recorded reactions.

A childish song about seeing celebrities boobies, oh my, the horror. I still don't see the hypocricy.

You do know that they're acting, right?

I never called him a hero. I said what about the song puts in doubt the idea that Seth is not a fan of sexual assault?

No one is saying he’s a fan of sexual assault so knock of the theatrics. What I’m saying is he’s gross and sexist and “calling” someone out doesn’t cover for that.

Great. So we ageee. He’s gross. Progress!
Well I didn’t really say that either. I didn’t like the song and thought it was in poor taste, but I’m not willing to condemn him over it.

But again, what is the point of this conversation? What does that song have to do with Weinstein?

The guy used actresses baring their breasts during rape scenes for cheap laughs, mere days are after making what he now calls a "venomous" dig at Weinstein.

You're being wilfully ignorant if you don't concede how that's relevant.

By the way, this thread is specifically about the joke, not Weinstein so this is all relevant.

If you want to be myopic sure it’s “off topic” for this thread. What he did was pander to the sexist and disgusting culture that allowed Weinstein to exist and thrive.

We've got to figure out who the purist ones of us are before dealing with real problems.

So because he makes jokes about fictional events in films he can’t actually be disgusted by terrible actions in the real world?

I really don’t understand the logic behind that train of thought.

Ugh. So what are you getting at? You are arguing stupid technicalities. Good for you? Want a point for that? It's disgusting and defending it is gross.

That he's not misogynistic, gross and disgusting just because of that song, I mean, he might be for other reasons but making him out be a vile human being because of that is a bit far.

And I'm not sure how I'm arguing technicalities when you're the one who brought up their reactions.

[edit]

I think I misunderstood your point.

Have you ever read accounts from actresses who have performed rape scenes?

Reducing that to "haha we saw your boobs" is pretty damn degrading.

I still don’t see your point. No matter how you feel about the song, being ok making jokes about movies isn’t the same as being ok with actual sexual assault.

So, what’s the connection?

Because sexual assault is so traumatizing that even acting it out is painful and personal? Come on - you’ve got to be kidding.

I’m not disputing that acting out a rape scene can’t be a painful experience. I’m sure can be, and has been.

But, again, Seth being willing to joke about fictional accounts of trama in no way implies he isn’t disguised by actual sexual assault. That is a huge, frankly ridiculous leap, and really does point to an all or nothing mindset.

I'll spell it out.

The fact that MacFarlane makes a living joking about rape and objectifying women makes me doubt his statement that the Weinstein joke came from a place of loathing and anger.

I'm pretty sure he was just going for a cheap laugh.

That doesn't make him a terrible person. It just makes him a disengenuous one.

The implication here seems to be that singing such a song hints at someone who wouldn't be angered by sexual assault, which is kind of ridiculous. We have much stronger evidence here, in the form of Jessica Barth's comments, that suggests otherwise.

In writing a crude, immature, and yes, casually sexist song about the oddity of an industry that subverts normalcy in the fact that its members have often seen each other nude to some degree (crude, sexist, and immature because it definitely played too much into the "boobs!" angle), Seth didn't ensure to discount nudity that unfolded in the context of a rape scene. When something can be dismissed as a careless lack of attention to detail, in no world should it be used as evidence of indifference to sexual assault.

Painting Seth as a flawed protagonist in this situation at best is fine, but overemphasizing that song to do so is odd.

It was funny, I'll totally defend it. And Charlize was totally in on it as we're the rest.

It's cool if you didn't understand it, most of gaf can't seem to handle jokes about sensitive subjects, so you aren't alone.

Please continue defending these delicate artists from the vileness of song about seeing their boobs in movies.

Only the pure may be recognized for doing good, you fuck up even slightly, tell a joke (good or bad) and you're as bad as the rest. Don't be surprised when it feels like you're surrounded by awful people because nobody passes your purity test.

Anyway, Seth MacFarlane isn't an awful human being so this wasn't a surprise. Also not a surprise, getting 3 pages in before being lectured on how Seth MacFarlane actually is awful because of jokes.

So, what movie and actresses does he reference in that song that we saw their breasts due to a rape or sexual assault scene? Because I literally went one by one and none of those movies he referenced had any rape scenes.

But again, why? Seth having a history of sexual assault would do that. But the fact that he is willing to tell jokes makes you think he does not care about actual real events? So when Barth told him about her experience with Weinstein, you think he just didn’t care?

Comedians joke about lots of things that they actually care about. That’s very often the point of their bits.

None of this is to say you have to like Seth’s jokes, or think well of him, or not think he is helping to perpetuate an unhealthy culture about sexual assault. Those could all be valid opinions.

But being willing to make jokes about an issue isn’t the same as not caring about it at all.

No. Doesn’t work like that. I’ve done dumb shit in my life. Treated people poorly, said terrible things and in general not be the best person I want to be. I cop to that 100%. But I’ve learned and listened.

What I don’t get to do is not admit that and not understand my contribution to the problem. And on top of that I don’t get to say “I secretly called someone out”.

If he was acknowledging his contribution to the problem AND saying he was calling it out it would be a different conversation.

his reaction after telling the joke says it all really
