In The Settlers™ Rise of an Empire, players build lively, bustling towns in a medieval world. Everything in this richly detailed, realistic world is visible and lovingly animated. Each Settler figure has his or her own daily routine, with a range of different actions and behaviors that can be observed at all times. Wow, Gamespot's download manager is absolute ass, it won't even start the download, while downloading it normally gives me almost 1 MB/s.
 
So the game is basically a Civilization knock off? I've never heard of the series before, so forgive my ignorance. I've never really been a much of a PC gamer. ;)

No, it only takes place in one age of time and it's a real-time game. You don't research new technology (that I know of), nor advance through ages. It's basically managing the development and planning of your settlements and the happiness of your settlers.

It's got more in common with Sim City than Civ.

It is a quite good game, but I really don't know why they name it Settlers! It has nothing to do with Settlers!

The newest installment of Settlers is more or less a soft copy of Anno :(

Settlers IV had the dark tribe and was, you know, a long time ago. :)

I will take a break from my regularly scheduled Civ4 catassery to play some multiplayer tomorrow if anyone's game for it. This is one of my must-have games for late 2007.
 
Is there an alternative download/torrent for this? I don't particularly want to sign up to gamespot just to beta test a game I may not like (loved Settlers II & III, but this seems very different...)
 
I just downloaded that stupid Gamespot download manager, and am getting speeds around 250k/sec now. So it's worth it
 
downloading now but I think its gunna kick my graphics cards ass.

edit: im getting 660kb/s without that shitty download manager
 
awesome... this is exactly what I have been looking for to play these days.

Settlers are awesome, and one of my favourite series of all times. I was just playing Anno 1701 and thinking it is too bad that it isnt more like Settlers.

Hell ya, I just closed that shitty download manager and used the old fashoined method and I'm at 1220 KB/s
 
edit: played through, graphics are decent, voice acting is good.. its different to other Settlers games but still fun. Two big fuck ups though, theres no save during the demo which is quite long and the buildings get built almost instantly which removes alot of the Settlers charm

From what I have played

No flag system, no pathing, no slow build process, resource management feels less thorough. I'm dissapointed.

I am actually more impressed with The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary than I am with this

I was expecting something similar

This doesn't feel much like The Settlers to me.

Not sure when I'll get around to it; would of been perfect 2 weeks ago. Not, though, I'm overwhelmed as it is with other betas higher on my priority list.

Still very keen on this game; just no time for it.

WHAT? Man...are you serious? I am the KING of A.D.D...I absolutely must have save. Sometimes I play games for 2 minutes and get distracted. So you basically have to just sit and play and next time you fire up the game you start from scratch all over??? Jebus H...

it is Settlers game just in name... just another run-of-the-mill RTS that really has nothing to do with Settlers.

Anyone wanting Settlers should get Settlers II 10th Aniversary edition....

Have you played this game so far? Have you ever played another Settlers game before? Heritage of kings doesn't count, this was crap!

This game is no Settlers! Instant building, no carrier, only one storage house, research trees, MONEY, you have to build a TOWN, and so on!

But thank god, I'm not alone:

It is an Open Multiplayer Beta! You can play 4 Maps in Multiplayer and walk through the Tutorial in Singleplayer!
 
Well, I deleted the BETA, it's not for me. I don't want to say don't download it, as someone might like it, but if you're expecting a Settlers game that returns to form, then you will be greatly dissapointed.

My take was the game took a huge leap towards the interface and some aspects of the most recent Anno game, and they *did* streamlined the gameplay some. What I played of it seemed enjoyable enough, though, and I look forward to its release.

It's very good looking, at least I think we can all agree on that.

Wasn't the 10th Anniversary remake of Settlers II done by the Cultures guys? Those are the guys you gotta watch. They took all the talent with them.

I believe you are right, Funatics is pretty awesome. I loved the Cultures games, especially the atmosphere in them.

That said, I disagree with the general opinion here. While it definitely isn't the Settlers we've known for many many years, we knew it wouldn't be. And it certainly isn't the abomination that was Settlers V (which, let's be honest, was pretty much a terrible WC3 clone). Settlers VI seems to me a hybrid of Anno 1701, previous Settlers games and some new stuff. And from what little indication the tutorial is, I could definitely see myself having a lot of fun with it. Don't really mind that it's not Settlers anymore, when it's the sixth game in a series (more if you count for instance the Settlers II: 10 Anniversary), I don't mind a change of pace.

You are totally right! Funatics, the guys you mean, are currently working on a secret title, but I don't know what it will be! I hope they'll do another Cultures. Rumors say a Settlers 3 remake is in development, but I don't believe this till I see some.

btw they worked on ParaWorld too! ;)


I've played to last research state now @ settlers and in my opinion the game isn't complex like settlers 2, but stressy! All time something is missing, especially the ingame-response which should tell you what is missing.

I'll start playing Anno now
