Shadow of the Beast on PS4 Includes the Amiga Original

Can someone explain why was this game such a big deal back in the day?

Heh... I got a copy of the Turbo CD version when I bought a Duo a while back and the game was horrible. Interesting art style but the game design was a mess - easy to get permanently stuck and be forced to reset if you do things like... go right instead of left at the beginning of the game. Or if you fall off the wrong ledge, you won't be able to get back up. Probably the worst game I own.

A nice bonus for PS4 owners.

Doubt anyone here will be able to complete the original*.

And I hope they've corrected the Hz issue that plagued the international version.

*infinite lives option as default is dumb (if I've read that right). Just leave the original cheat code in if people really want it.

You are on about how you activated it on the Amiga right?

I doubt they will have coded the left and right mouse buttons emulation that you had to hold to activate the cheat onto the joypad though?

im conflicted on getting this on launch day

ill still be playing uncharted plus other games ill be spending time with

dammit too many awesome games coming out at once

anyone wanna convince me i should buy it at launch

Dark Souls is the Shadow of the Beast of the 3rd person genre.

SotB looked incredible when it came out. That scrolling. Dreamy.

The soundtrack was killer.

It was open world in a sense; you could travel either left or right and explore. There was a right way to go about things but that freedom felt good.

The game was borderline - if not - impossible*, though. Many things kill you in one hit. You had to learn all the particular (awkward) hit boxes.
No lives. No checkpoints. No mercy.
It was all about learning patterns. This insane difficulty combined with incredible presentation has kept it relevant through the years.

*International versions were further plagued by the 50 to 60hz issue that wasn't taken into a account. So having off frame pacing made any attempt to hit things even harder.

I thought the cheat code was on the Megadrive version too? Or maybe my memory is toying with me.

1989.

That and the amazing soundtrack.

I'm still blown away even now when I fire it up on the Amiga.

I had one friend who had an Amiga was super jealous of him, playing great looking games and his games were cheap to free haha. He had footy manager for it my first ever taste of footy manger game and I was gutted going home to my Nes then Snes haha.

i consider its structure to be a lightweight metroid-like, the world isn't huge but it's "open" and the blocked paths can be opened by getting a certain item or ability or by killing a certain monster.

Going home tonight to play some SotB and SotB2 on my A500/C1084 setup.

This was the 80s' Dark Souls for sure.
Some people consider Moonstone to be a sort of Souls games ancestor, it was hard, you could have been killed with one hit, there were other knights trying to kill you and even aestetichally it wasn't that far from souls games

Moonstone is amazing.. I'm still looking to grab a copy for my Amiga collection but mint copies go for around hundreds of bucks..

It's just plain amazing.

I mean, it looked great at the time, but it was a pretty average game.

Now, a Moonstone remake would make sense.

As people said, graphically and sonically Pygnosis were on another level then.

The game only became vaguely enjoyable to play by the third entry though.

Stylistically Psygnosis were unique, but I do think their reputation for pretty but shallow games was justified. It was only later that the gameplay became really solid too.

This is a cool bonus for fans, but I'm more concerned about how good the new game is since I thought the original sucked in the gameplay department.

they were the crytek of their time then :)

Did this game change price? I preordered it at 19.99 €, but now in the store it's 14.99 €.

Weird that we've heard so little about the game so far.

I actually still enjoy SotB1 , guess its a whole package thing for me. Sweet 2d graphics and music, cool art style, but mediocre gameplay lol.

Yes, the price has changed. You can cancel and preorder at the new price - if your store region allows that, I think. It worked for me in Germany.

Still no news about the OT creation? Guys, someone has to do it... and if noone does, I will...

When do reviews start going up? I could get this cheaper on EU PSN for me but I don't want to be stuck with a 50 Hz ver. of the original game =_=

Good call. Who is making the OT?

If necessary, I can provide some image editing/banner creation...

Sorry, I didn't see your reply. I have signed up for it and was planning on doing something fairly minimal like I did with Alienation or Titan Souls - but if you want to take it you're more than welcome. Otherwise I don't mind managing it and I'll welcome any help you'd like to contribute with banners or images!

Do I really need to do this? I thought the preorder price would auto-update to the new price...

Cool, Shadow of the beast on the Amiga was one of those games that made a real impact on me as a gamer back in the day. The music and gfx was so good. When I think of Amiga this is the game that pops up in my head.

I actually beat it back in the days, without any cheat.

Looking back, it was a waste of time, the game really wasn't very good.

Most of their games weren't any more or less shallow than what was on Amiga at the time. Some of them, like Lemmings of course or the Killing Game Show, had really good gameplay. I'd say their reputation was more on games that were way too hard than shallower than the competition.

According to the official OT thread, Elandyll already has the job?! You two need to coordinate this, so nobody wastes their effort.

If needed, I can provide banners and images etc.
You two clarify who is making the OT, then, if needed, contact me. Thanks :)

Yup this is always a problem with rereleases of this kind. Arcade sticks works for me though, I played through The Last Ninja and Last Ninja 2 on Wii Virtual Console using a NeoGeo stick and it was awesome enough to bring tears to my eyes :)
(btw, the tears had nothing to do with the devilish pixel perfect complex jumping sections where a failed jump meant instant death ;P)

I can't use a lapstyle fightstick either. I need a handheld joystick, one that I can cradle in one hand along the base, with the other hand being on the button. Like this:

This is the only way up-to-jump feels normal for me. Holding a joystick like this actually feels great.

It's almost like they read my complains about it on GAF. Yes, atmosphere is king in SOTB. And yes, music and art-style manage to transport you in a mysterious world where you often just try to survive. Yet, they decided to implement immersion breaking on-screen combos and high-scores for whatever reason to change the game completely and by missing why people loved this difficulty rock many years ago.
I wish them best luck with their release but in my opinion it could've been way better, the universe has so much potential that could've been exploited by current gen hardware but instead we get this.

btw, sup gaf:

Goddamn, I love your posts as always, Krejlooc. Figured you would post about that. Fully agree with you about the game, but nostalgia is strong! The Amiga original and C64 versions are my favourite as well - something about that OST sounds so nice on the SID chip.

Perfect IP for Sony Santa Monica if they wanted to move on from the GoW franchise, but I guess nobody at Sony thought about that.

As for this game I am still not sold on the combat-loop, it just looks weird. Hopefully it turns out great when I actually play the game.

Well, the original on Amiga was a PAL 50 Hz game. ^^
Yeah, the problem with 50Hz isn't 50Hz itself, the mode actually gives a gain in resolution so the trade-off can be good, the problem is 60Hz games straight converted to 50Hz without speed or graphics adjustments. That problem isn't there for Shadow of the Beast, the game has been developed for 50Hz.

Nostalgia dream. I wholly approve this.

The Amiga and Atari ST days was a magical time. Only fans from that era will fully appreciate this whether they play the game or not.

That person is currently banned. Unless the ban is up in two days, I'll do the OT. Edit - actually, I'll contact a mod first just to find out what normally happens in this instance.

Cool, thanks. Will watch later.
