Shadow of the Colossus is 10 years old today

My second favorite game of all time. When I first played this, everything had me in awe from beginning to end. I have never felt so isolated in a game ever before and it was absolutely incredible. The soundtrack is impeccable and every moment you spend with the game is one that will become an unforgettable memory.

I'm really looking forward to TLG, but I doubt that anything else will hit me as hard as this game did.

This might be the best games with the worse controls ever created.

I thought the same for awhile. I don't think I fully grasped the controls til partway through the 3rd Collossus and was thinking the game was too janky and unresponsive, but I learned mashing triangle ain't the best way to climb, gonna hold it and get that boost jump

They're great once you get used to them

SotC controls are rock solid, and put modern autoshit like asscreed to shame.

the concept and control scheme for the game were great but the execution of the responsiveness was lacking even with the fruit and lizards.
These are all just opinions but you bsing with that "rock solid" line though. XD

Yeah, controls aren't part of the homogenized norm, but it allows a decent degree of control when you get used to it, and you don't run into problems where an input does something you don't want it to.

Made me a Ueda fan. It still sticks with me even after all these years. Eagerly anticipating The Last Guardian (whenever it releases).

Probably my favourite game of all time. That slow realisation that the quest might not have been noble (or right) was great. Should play it again since I have the ps2 hooked up at the moment.

The controls are very grounded. The actions are so simple and have such weight to them that every little thing I do matters. I love the controls.

It's not exactly twitch based combat, so I think it works well.

Why does GAF tell me every fucking day how fucking old I have become.

Also, I still haven't beaten this game.

I started my free 7-day PS Now trial over the weekend just to play this game again. Still is in my all-time top 5. While the controls haven't aged as well as I would've hoped, the sense of isolation, wonder, and mystery in that world is still as thick as I remembered it. One of the greats.

on the other hand its been 10 years since team ICO released a game.

:O

Okay, I'm going to be a bit self-promotional after all, since Boss Fight Books just published an early look at the intro chapter of my book about SotC.

Check it out here if you're interested (I'd love to hear any early feedback). We also put up pre-orders of the eBook today ($5), though the physical book will be super nice.

Anyhow, that's it, back to SotC appreciation!

This is the game that made me realize making videogames is the only job I want.

My only real major complaint is the nature of its puzzles really kills the experience on a replay. The colossi feel less like a beast I'm fighting and more like a series of small events I can easily do.

this game is a masterpiece. i love it. on the other hand its been 10 years since team ICO released a game. kinda sad

'Team ICO' isn't a thing. It was developed by Japan Studio and the team members have worked on other projects since.

Like how Bayonetta was by 'Team Little Angels' and Wonderful 101 was by 'Team Wonderful'.

Game is an absolute masterpiece. Loved absolutely everything about it.

The way the game introduced and taught you mechanics was absolutely brilliant. And the music, holy shit. Amazing stuff.

Memorable game...
For people who never play it before, play it without walkthrough for best experience and enjoy eureka moment ^^

I was 9 years old when this masterpiece came out. I was a stupid boy and never finished it. My PS2 and my whole collection got thrown away.

SOTC has easily been my GOAT ever since I first played it. I've been playing games since 1982 and have never played a game like it and don't think I ever will. My fave thing in games have always been the boss battles, the bigger the better and for years I would always wish for a game that would give me nothing but. When this game was announced I knew it was going to be awesome but I had no idea it was going to be so moving and artistic at the same time. The atmosphere and scale is what really makes this game special for me. The amazingly huge landscape really gives you this feeling of being lost. On my first playthrough I was upto the Colossus after the Horse I think and was lost in those damn woods, I kept going around in circles and was wondering if I was even in the right place when I found a small path tucked away in the corner....I thought to myself that this was the same path I had come via and was slowly losing hope of finding the next colossi, I decided to take the path anyways and it came out into this huge openeing with massive sunglare in my eyes I thought....this is different....another couple of steps....THIS IS DIFFERENT!! I was amazed of what lay before me.....it looked like another HUGE area with temples in the distance.....I was like WOW this game can't be this huge can it? It was!

This is the only game where i'm dying to play a sequel of it but would be mortified if they actually made one. It is the only game I would go back in time for. I've finished the game about 3 times now and even on the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs the feelings I was having were incredible, the impact wasn't as huge but the feels were still there....the only difference being I didn't cry when Agro fell.

I'm so glad that there is such a huge cult following of this game as it's so special. Also i'm so glad the developers are Team ICO because in the hands of anyone else the memory of this game would've been butchered to shit by now.

I've tried to convince many people to play this game but only 1 of them really appreciated what I was feeling and even then I don't think he really 'got it'. I have played in front of a few mates in our usual friday night weed/alcohol sessions and many people have told me how awesome it is to watch me play but they can't actually play themselves because of the difficulty. I'm like 'what difficulty' because to this day I have never died in this game. I always played it like I was the boy (I call him Atreyu because this is like my Never Ending Story dream come true).

I can talk about this game forever because there are an infinite number of scenarios I have cooked up about it but all I can say is.....this game....

I remember when I was younger, my best friend and I first played this on a demo desk from PlayStation mag I believe, that first boss was the most mind blowing thing I ever saw in gaming (at that time). Such great memories, glad it's getting so much love these days

Never played SotC but I've always wanted to. I just got a PS4 and see that it's on PS Now. Is that the only way to play it on PS4?

The souls games are a rebranding of Kings Field, which has been a franchise from started back on psx.
TLOU is a great experience, but practically a polar opposite.
Journey is nothing like SotC. Its like people forget SotC was based on rock solid gameplay mechanics.

The biggest impact SotC had on the industry was blowing Miyamoto's mind at e3, and all he did was adapt little homages, none of which remotely conveyed the experience he was so enraptured by.

Like the other contemporary greats of sixth gen like metroid prime, hard to design games were ignored by the industry in favor of factory line producable games that could be distilled down to bullet points for marketing campaigns.

If SotC had an impact on the industry, we would be in a much better place right now.
TLoU clearly takes inspiration from Ico. Both games have been pretty influential with games being inspired or outright aping them.

Kinda went on a nonstop playing binge laat night, beat up to 15 and now only have 16 left. About to get ready to do it right now, this is one of the most wonderful games I've ever played. I'm sad that it's about to end :(

I thought Avion (Colossus 5) is when it all came together.

Phalanx (Colossus 13) somehow topped it.

Never played SotC but I've always wanted to. I just got a PS4 and see that it's on PS Now. Is that the only way to play it on PS4?
I would recommend to borrow someone's PS3 and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection if that is an option. Or even an old PS2 will do. PSnow is kind of hit and miss depending on your location and tolerance for lag.

I never played it (didn't have a PS3). Sounds like I missed something special.

If I ever pick up a cheap PS3 I'd have to become a full time gamer to catch up on what I missed out on!

This is also the only game I need to look at when people say a world is empty or doesn't have enough "meaningful content". The world of SotC wasn't designed to be like a theme park where you have a ton of quests, NPCs, storylines, etc. Things were just there to add a sense of place. Sometimes, empty is OK.

Probably my favorite game of all time. The first time I rode the bird boss my jaw hit the floor. Soo good

Its that moment when its flying towards you and you realize that not only is not a cut scene , you actually have to jump it while the 100ton flying truck tries to ram into you.
