Shadow of the Colossus Video Preview

The fact that this game will have an end makes me very sad.

Some of those vistas in that video are incredible

Amazing. It looks better than any adventure game yet. It's massive when you see the enemy fights, but so sparse and beautiful at other times. The art is...wow.

At the very least the US boxart they're showing at Gamestop for this game doesn't suck like Ico's.

That's a decent boxart, but I'm almost 100% positive that won't be it since the actual Shadow of the Colossus logo is totally different.

This game looks like pure SEXX0R. The blurring effect that's been added is freaking awesome. Can't wait for this game...can't wait can't wait can't wait at all.

Also, the music is INCREDIBLE...at least in my opinion, and doesn't get much love in this forum. I love all the tunes I've listened to so far, so epic and so moving. Hell yes. Is Michiru Oshima behind the soundtrack?

Anyway, did they change the color of the girl's hair? It was white when the game was revealed. Now she's black haired.

Nah, it's always been black...just checked the video of the first public showing of the game. :P

I also greatly heart the music. I'll start the trailer and then do some chores or something just so I can hear the music playing in the background.

This game looks depressing.

You're alone in this huge world with just you and horse, with endless barren lands. Agoraphobics can't play. Then you take down these giant beasts with seemingly innocent looks in their eyes and that flail around in agonizing pain when you stab them, however the protagonist's plight is to ressurect his love and who knows if that'll happen.

:(

I look at this and only one thought (aside from "Shit, I must play this now!") enters my brain, and that thought is, "Please have something to show me on PS3 at the next E3!!"

What if you're... evil!

Bwahahahaha! Take that nature!

Christ it looks so beautiful and inspired at times

The overworld seems pretty varied and interesting... my only concern would be that it stays that way entirely.

Just, what... 6 more weeks?

OMG - fur maps on the ground? Take that Starfox Adventures!!

That's just a cheap way to make the grass. A little odd, but it works.

I just watched the GT preview again, and I'm just flabbergasted by the procedural animation in this game. There's a part towards the end where the main character is near the edge of a part of the colossus. It abruptly is yanked upwards, and suddenly the character is knocked off balance, balancing on just one foot, flailing his arms; then he's finally knocked off and falls head over heels. This has to be the first game to truely incorporate the concept of balance as a phsyical simulation in a game. They should license their inverse kinematics engine to other developers.

I was so impressed I made a gif.

My favorite animtation thus far that I have seen is when the main character is standing on the horse and controlling it by the reigns. The horse animates so beautifully and the main characters stance is great. If possible, I'll ride like that as much as possible.

I haven't seen the vid yet, slow connection, but can someone answer a few questions for me?

1. Does it still shimmer?
2. Is there still texture pop-in?

I expect everything else to be fixed in time for release. The shimmer doesn't bother me as much as the texture draw-in. If they can fix or minimize it like in GT4 I'll be happy.
Of course, I can fix it further via the HDD Loader but, I'm still hoping to see it fixed at release.

Regardless, the game looks amazing.

It looks beautiful, much better than TP... but I'm not sure I dig the whole, wander a huge environment for hours with nothing going on. I'll still get it cuz I liked Ico so much...

No it doesn't still shimmer. And 2 the texture pop-in is very minimal as of right now.

I honestly deep in my heart believe that this game could be better than Zelda TP. I think Zelda will get the upperhand just based off its past.

Is there a PS2 game that DOESN'T?
Haha.

But yeah, SotC doesn't seem to use any mip-mapping, or it's using the botched non-corrected one. It could be it's biggest visual problem.

What are you basing this on? You can still see this in video, although to a smaller degree than it was in E3 demo.

There's some pretty horrible polygon/texture/everything pop-in in the second video, when uh the dude reaches a stone bridge. I'm sure that will be fixed...everything else seems to have improved a lot since the E3 build. :P

Great video.

This is an awesome idea for a game.

The only thing I'm hoping is that they have something ELSE besides just hunting down the 15 colossi...there has to be more.

Then I think you may be dissappointed.

I haven't been following up too much on this game... only mainly seen videos... and other than the presentation of it all, which looks like nothing I've ever seen and downright amazing... what is there to this game?

Right now I only see two gameplay elements:

- Riding a horse around in huge deserted environments.

- Fighting the same huge baddie over and over again while on said horse or climbing on it.

Okay. Is this it? Because if so, that makes for one hell of a shallow game. Please tell me that there's so much more to this game than just that? Villages? People interaction? Many more different baddies? Gadgets? Dungeons? Not always on horse? Non-boring environments filled with things to see and do?

Never played ICO?

Only briefly. Seemed like there were some interesting puzzles. Had a very Zelda-ish vibe.

But this looks nothing like ICO except for the art style? Still doesn't tell me if there's more to the game than just wandering around on a horse and fighting that huge baddie.

Well, in the GT preview, they show at least three different colossi (the one with the club, the four legged one, and the skinnier biped with the sword-like thing).

As SolidSnakex said, try playing ICO. It's the other game from this team, and it follows a similar minimalist design. From what we've heard so far, though, there hasn't been any mention of other people in this word, NPCs, or anything like that.

Darn it!!! I can't see the vid, the gametrailer d/l link doesn't work properly for me, and the yousendit link is empty!!!!

seems like there could be puzzles in between each colossus..

but if you think about it, 15 colossi are a lot, considering each one is a multi-layered puzzle in itself..

this is going to be one hell of a game.

Because that's all they've shown.

Like every level in nearly every other game ever made, you start at Point A, get to Point B, and then fight a boss. It's not like SotC eliminates the process of arriving at these bosses entirely; there still is a platforming element, there still is combat, or something like it, anyways (As proven by the pic posted above by Doom_Bringer), there's still a story, and all of that other good stuff that makes a game a complete experience.

Perhaps Sony should have released some clips of the "in-between moments" so that there isn't as much confusion.

I was thinking of the 1up videos that were posted a couple of days ago. :P
Ah yes, I remember that. That popup looked bad there at one point. I think those videos are from some very old build though. I'm pretty sure I've seen clips those videos were composed of several months ago. It is however a little concerning that they don't seem to be addressing that nasty LOD system. If LOD would at least be fading in and not just appearing like that.

Absolutely stunning.

Even though I find myself less inclined to play a game with Ico styled play mechanic (low empasis on battle and high on exploration and puzzles), I'm just awestruck on how Shadow of the Collossus looks and plays.

The sheer scale of it all is massive, from it's locations to it's collossi creatures, just wow!! The contrast lighting has that beautiful Ico style touch.

That animation though takes the freaking cake. The way the characters move about from the way the boy, the horse, and to the collossi are so eerily sutle, and detailed. Even something as simple as holding a sword straight up into the air is done with thought and care. You can see it waver slightly here and there, making the main character look as if he constantly trying to maintain it's vertical balance.

Quite possibly the best animation in a game I have ever seen.

Man, I wish more devs out there are like some of SCEA devs, the Naughty Dog team, and Insomniac which use a variation of ND Jak engine, and of course the kickass Santa Monica Team that created God Of War. All have great image quality and shimmering is not an issue despite the fact there games are have massive scales and draw distances (all couple with a nice streaming engine to rid of load times). It seems like most devs don't even try mip-mapping on PS2.

The fluid animations are INSANE. This video just sold me on the game, this is gonna be AWESOME. Sadly, I wished that it would come out as a launch next gen title, as i feel that the low res look of the game is the only thing that that I can find wrong about it

I can't wait for this one, it looks like one of the most unique and beautiful games I've seen in years.

A part of me, however, wishes this was a PS3 launch title or something...it would just be THAT much more gorgeous and smooth.

So the game is nothing but boss fights? Interesting.. I look forward to it.
Not nessesarily. Judging from the trailer there looks to be shadow enemies on screen.
