Shadowrun Returns 2-Year Launch Anniversary Update Video

Kickstarter Update #35

Hey everyone!

Mitch here, with just enough bandwidth to pull my head out of polishing the game to let you know that Shadowrun: Hong Kong has an official release date! During the Kickstarter, we estimated that we would release the game in August… and that’s why we’re releasing the game in August!

August 20th, 2015 at 10am PST, to be specific. On Steam, GoG, & Humble.

My body is so ready. New matrix system. New leylines system. Combo attacks system. Dual-purpose spells. No more mobile restrictions holding it back. Ooooooh yeah.

Just about a month off from the early wave of Steam controllers - looking forward to finally playing Shadowrun properly on the big screen.

Man, HBS know their shit with Shadowrun.

Honestly, IMO as soon as they're done with Hong Kong, they need to just megacorp Takeover Cliffhanger and fix the issues with SRO. There's so much potential in there, and I think the two titles would really mesh well together.

I rarely day 1 games but I'm really looking forward to this. Dragonfall was my favourite RPG I played last year. I haven't even finished The Witcher 3 yet either.

Looking forward to getting my crappy messenger bag!
You know you'll never use it anyway. It might get dirty!

I backed at the full digital package level. Between the basic game (multiple playthroughs should be obligatory if Dragonfall DC is any indication - and let's not forget about the audio commentary), the expansion campaign, the soundtrack, the novel, the short story collection and the sourcebook, I fully expect SRHK to keep me entertained until the end of this year.

What was the other one that launched on kickstarter?i havent played any of these, but they look great....

This has been an evolutionary series. Which means it started off kinda ho-hum, but each new release builds on everything they learned and the feedback from players, and improves significantly. If you haven't played any of them, I would recommend just getting Shadowrun Dragonfall Director's Cut. It's a stand alone title, doesn't require playing the original, and will be the closest to Hong Kong in terms of UI and feature set. Of course HK is going to be even better and more advanced, so you'll also get to see how it evolves. :D

Screens look nice.

Just started playing Dragonfall last night. I haven't played many games in this style before but I am enjoying it so far. The combat system is interesting. I can see it getting pretty complex and strategic later in the game.

Is Dragonfall that better than Returns? I've played Returns and thought it was ok.

Bought Dragonfall on iOS but haven't played yet. Why is it much better than Returns?

I can't wait for this.

I wonder how we'll look back at the Kickstarter generation of RPG developers many years into the future. Will they be remembered as fondly as we now do Black Isle, Troika, Looking Glass, etc.? Of course, even today many of the older developers that came before the ones I mentioned are largely forgotten such as Origin Systems, SSI, Sir-Tech, etc.

This is so soon. Somehow not soon enough.

They've really handled this kickstarter so smoothly. Best I've seen yet.
Absolutely.

Looking forward to getting my crappy messenger bag!
Same here!

Dragonfall (DC) is one of those rare sequels that does literally nothing worse than its predecessor, and improves almost everything, often significantly.

Returns is like a pre-Alpha version of Dragonfall. It was really a prototype for the concept, and by comparison, it is so bare bones and rough that they really should go back and give it a Director's Cut.

Dragonfall is better in every single possible way. It's non-linear with tons of side quests, two things Returns lacked entirely. You have a dedicated squad--all with amazing back stories--that you build up and can pick and choose who goes on runs, rather than the generic ones you hire in Returns. There are ton of more spells, items, etc. Equipment and character customization, period, plays a much bigger role. UI is infinitely better.

The only two things Returns has that Dragonfall does not are Jake Armitage and Harlequin.

Yes, much better. You have a real party, the characters are more fleshed out, the story is much more fleshed out (the story to Returns had to be cut by about 75% to make the deadline), it's less linear and has better world-building (you have more side missions and a hub where you can wander around and talk to people in between missions). Plus many small improvements in the gameplay and UI and just more of everything.

It is significantly better. Dragonfall (Director's Cut) has a dedicated crew of side characters in your party, each with their own mission and story which are well written. The missions are less linear than in Dead Man's Switch and you can do them in a variable order (or choose not to do them at all). It has more weapons and magic for different play styles and missions accommodate more types of characters.

And the writing overall is better.

Edit: Sorry Heringer, I swear when I started writing all those other people hasn't responded yet!

On topic: have we actually seen anything of the new Matrix yet? I'm a bit concerned on that front.

If you've played Returns you will probably have noticed that the game feels more like an adventure game with a number of instanced point and click scenarios and some combat rather than a proper RPG. The pacing was awkward, there isn't much content, and story characters have little impact on anything, with the player mostly filling out the party with hirelings.

Dragonfall changes all that. Right from the start there is a full party of story characters running with the character you create and there's a much stronger story hook. The story characters stick around in the hideout and you can talk to them between runs, as the game advances you can unlock more dialogue with them and they all have backstories. There's also a full town hub which you can explore between runs, rather than just a single two-room building like in Returns.

There are also way better roleplaying options in missions themselves, better balance of skills and weapons, and the story is much more interesting in terms of how it ties in to the larger world lore of Shadowrun. More ambitious, and way better ending options based on your choices.

If you play the Director's Cut on PC, there's also a totally revamped UI, a new armor/cover system, more optional missions, and every single story party character has a character-centric mission which has two possible outcomes determining what special skill they get after it is completed.

Much as I love Kickstarter, I still have to boggle with amazement at the notion of a Kickstarter game actually releasing on time!

Thanks for all the answers! I guess I should check it out, then.

Is the iPad version good enough compared to the director's cut version, though?

Yes, they really appeared in control of the process from the beginning to the end. HBS learned a lot from their first Kickstarters. This article explains it in some detail.

I expect other future Kickstarters from other companies who've already gone through the whole process at least once will likewise profit from experience.

I played the normal version before the DC was out, and it was already a huge improvement over Returns. I fell in love with it, and playing through it again when the DC was out only reinforced that further. I can't speak for the iPad version though, played it on PC. The content is the same but I'm not sure about the performance.

Awesome!

Dragonfall DC isn't just only one of the best RPGs in the recent years but also one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

That's true; while Massive Chalice was also delayed, it definitely seemed more carefully handled than Broken Age was; DF clearly learned some things.

This is amazing. They delivered exactly on time, their kickstarter has been so well done. I'm looking forward to my messenger bag as well.

I play it on my Nexus 9 when I'm traveling and performance is fine. Kinda fiddly to control combat with your finger, though.

Nice, need to check this.

Aw man, still so far.
As other have said, after Dragonfall, I expect great things from HK.

It has been awesome to seeing a proper reborn of a beloved franchise. And its evolution.
Can't think on many examples, other that perhaps Deus Ex.

Damn that's so close, I'm ready.

I wonder what class I should play this time, I mostly played Decker in the other two.

Damn I seriously need to play the other games! I started playing for about 10 minutes and haven't since, but still backed the Kickstarter because I know it's something I'll love. Might get stuck in this weekend.

Is it best to play Shadowrun base then the follow up?
