Shane Satterfield: Wii U will cost $299

I just wish they would release the price sooner.

$360 for system + 1 extra game+ CA sales tax is close to 400 bucks. If they would release the price now, perhaps Amazon would be nice enough to let us preorder it before they start charging CA sales tax in September.

Im more interested in what the tablet will cost and how much that added to the cost of the Wii U as a whole.

Chances are you'll get an iSupply breakdown 2 weeks after release telling you it's $40 worth of raw materials, Nintendo will sell it for $80 and people will go on about how they're being ripped off because it's sold for profit.

I said this in another Wii U thread, but a shorter version:

Personally I would conjecture that the real problem is 'more evolved' motion controls are not practical or inexpensive yet. There's a real problem with how to track a control device in a full three dimensions, precisely, without using a ring of sensor bars around the device in the room. Move has more tech in it than the wiimote, yet is still inferior in terms of reliability and precision - it loses calibration and drifts constantly. The Wii uses a very simple (braindead simple) hard lock-on system: two LED dots over the monitor that provide absolute triangulation for the control device.

The problem is, I don't know if improved motion controls would have been feasible yet with Wii U; at most a few extra sensors ala Move, but it basically would have been a Wii Motion Plus device. No significant upgrade.

I would not be surprised at all to see Nintendo turn back to expanding motion controls again in the future. But for now, it seems really hard for people to actually take one thing Nintendo said at face value... that Wii U (from their perspective at least) is designed to fuse the Wii to a 'core' game system. Which is literally what it is. wiimote+ combined with a conventional game controller as a primary input device, not a dongled accessory. With all the industry standard buttons on it (clickable sticks even). The screen pad idea, which a lot of people can't seem to wrap their heads around, seems pretty obvious to me considering the kind of interface options it opens up that mirror a lot of what's popular right now.

Sure, we can see in 2 years where things stand. But predictions don't work in the game industry anyway, in general. Just about nobody was 'correct' this generation no matter how wild, or how conservative, how 'obvious' their predictions where.
I do wonder how expensive new controller tech would have to be. After all, the Wiimotion + came out 3 years ago and it was inexpensive. Add that to the fact that Leap motion is coming out and it only costs $70.

I don't think price or practicality is the issue, I think its just the fact that Nintendo thinks the WMP, as it is, is good enough.

Good enough for now, probably. Just think about how annoying it would be for Nintendo to convince consumers to buy a Wii Motion + for their Wii Motion + on top of the new console they're trying to sell. The whole value proposition of leveraging the existing Wii Remotes would be lost. I do think we'll see an upgrade in 2-3 years since it's unlikely they'll ever be able to go above 2 Gamepads at once and the asymetrical multiplayer seems to be a central concept for the entire system.

What made him say ACIII looks best on Wii U?

He didn't elaborate, only said that he'd played the other versions and thought Wii U was best. This is interesting because everything I've heard to date has basically said this is just a straight port with no differences. If anything, it wasn't optimised for Wii U so dropped frames occasionally.

Thats what I thought, just a straight port. Hope his eyes arent playing tricks on him leading up to false news.

Maybe they've gotten around to utilizing the eDRAM and implementing AA. *shrugs*

I'm currently playing Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and it could benefit greatly from an in-game full map on the second screen. In fact, I can think of a bunch of open-ended games that could benefit from it. So, while it's nothing groundbreaking, just that feature alone for AC3 would make the WiiU version the superior console version (assuming everything else is the same).

It needs to be $249 to compete with the current consoles, imo. With a $299 launch with games that have been out and are available to current gen consoles it's has to be at a very competitive price. $299 makes sense though if it comes with some software but it'll never reach the potential of Wii Sports.

Good thing it isnt competing with the current consoles.

I hope you are right in that we'll see a new upgrade in the coming years. because really The Wiimotes right now are ok I guess, but could be so much more.

Fuck! when did "Experience" replace "Game". Every other word out of these guys is experience this and experience that WTF?!?

Edit: This is reference to the Invisible walls episode.

You are aware doicare is a joke character, right?

While I've seen people try to call him a joke character for his stand on his opinions, I haven't got the sense that he actually was a joke character, no.

Two years from now, almost no one will play with Wiimote and except some random Nintendeo game, no one will support it. Especially not 3rd Parties.

Also, who of you wants to use it instead of the WiiU controller? You just bought a new console which unique feature is a second screen and touchscreen controller. And you'll use your 6 years older Wiimote device instead?

Wiimote+'s will continue to be sold as the multiplayer controller of choice for the Wii U, so no, Wiimote+'s won't be phased out anytime soon.

Or 3D in their future handhelds.

3-D might be dropped from future handhelds, like multi-player was dropped from BC for GBA games on DS. Since the 3DS can be played 100% 2-D even now, there's no guarantee that 3-D will stay in future generations of Nintendo handhelds.

Pikmin 3 uses it as their primary, with the gamepad as optional.

No. Pikmin 3 uses it as its basic control option. It gets real interesting when you go to the advanced controls with the GamePad, where you can touch to switch between the four leaders to really multi-task to get things done.

I don't think current gen consoles are much of worry. Not only do they have no future (sales have been declining across the board) but Wii U is really about Nintendo. Third parties and the games they put out aren't especially what will be driving the system.

Because the games haven't changed at all. There's too much obsession with new input gimmicks all of the time and it does 0 to improve a game at all. So your accuracy in call of duty went up 5%, big deal. You're still playing the same call of duty I was on 360. If it was considered by most people to be vastly superior there wouldn't be such heavy resistance to them by gamers and the more casual crowd that makes up a large amount of 360/ps3's base.

And no we shouldn't be stuck with dual shocks. We should be using the 360 pad.
Damn Derrick...why so oblivious? There are SO many games that use new interfaces and inputs that work really well. I've been reading your posts throughout this thread and find you have some valid points but this one youre jumping off the cliff with.

Anyways, the less the industry listen to minorities with opinions/views like this the better. Makes me almost want to say "bring on our new Apple overlords" :-P

But seriously man...the fuckin 360 pad?????

What logic are you guys using now? Every console has better games than one thats not out yet goddamn....extremely silly posts in this thread.
Except usually you dont have such killer AAA titles coming out for the previous gen sytems when the new one arrives. The 360 and PS3 are getting some really good games this year on cheaper hardware, in an already established base. XBL and PSN have what Nintendo doesnt with its Wii U release and that could very well hurt its chances.

All this talk of prices and bundles made me fire up Photoshop to come up with possible package designs.
Can someone please shop in the 299 price tag with nintendo's usual font and some legit looking fine print on this thing?

I want to see if websites report this as legit boxart release lol

By this logic, you realize you're saying the other two will struggle as well?

Edit: Nintendo should've have hired you years ago MYE.

the PS3 has more and better games right now. So that is 50 dollars too much for the WiiU. i have also heard that the PS3 price is going down in the fall.
Smh, the PS2 had more and better games than the new systems launches, didnt mean people didn't buy NEW consoles because they wanted NEW things...as said before, let's see the tune people come in with next year when other NEW systems launch...

Edit: :-O MYE!!
Get it? "Oh My!" :-P
But that looks legit...

I still dont understand the argument probably for gaf folks but just regular consumers it wont matter. What happens when ps4/720 is coming out? People will say oh geez I dont know if they will sell, WiiU has a new 3d mario and metroid coming out and many others.. That wont be the case its new technology its gonna sell regardless. The only way you can tell is long term. The way the dreamcast was selling at first you wouldve thought sega was back on track. Even if the ps2 was coming out the year after that.

Wow thats pretty legit looking..someone will use it lol

What about last time around when PS2 was still getting some killer games like Okami, God of War 2, MGS3 Subsistence and the like?

What about when PS2 launched and PS1 was getting FFIX?

Or when Dreamcast launched at about the same time as FF8 and Majora's Mask?

The last 15 years at least have seen consoles launch against established systems with killer software releases still going on.

Anyways, the less the industry listen to minorities with opinions/views like this the better.

You might be disappointed when the next systems have either the same controllers or something extremely similar. Xbox will likely have kinect packed in but you're nuts if you think it won't have a 360 pad with it. They know the majority still don't want motion.

Terrible argument--Nintendo has what XBL and PSN will never have, namely Mario et al.

Now that's a terrible argument. Sony and Microsoft are going to obviously come out with deals and whatever right around the time Wii U releases to stymie sales. A cheaper console with established features and services vs. a brand new console that will potentially confuse consumers? PS360 will sell more this Christmas, Mario be damned.

Thats good for Nintendo but not 3rd parties and Nintendo understands that it needs third parties if it hopes to succeed well after PS4/Xbox3 are released.

Mario games get systems into people's homes. Its entirely up to the third parties to come up with quality software that those people actually want to buy.

For some reason, seeing that box makes me want to buy one at launch, & don't even give a fuck about nintendoland.

I try not to go for launches, but I have a feeling I'm going to cave.

That quote needs to be at the top of every WiiU thread.
$300 is a good price,1st party games will be AAA but i'm not seeing anything that makes 3rd party WiiU versions of games better than their PS360 rivals.

Create a thread. It will be on wiiudaily a few hours later

Yeah, I just got to laugh at those that keep on saying, "Everyone's going to ignore the Wii U & buy PS3 &/or 360 once they reach $200!".

Fact is, the sales for both PS3 & 360 are declining all around the world, & not even a price drop is going to sell a whole truckload of consoles. This generation has been going on for now nearly 7 years (way past the usual 5-6 year generation mark), it's ran out of steam, & people are tired of them & want something new.

If people wanted PS3's & 360's, they already have one.

The graphics will be better and the Gamepad and enhance gameplay.

The Sega Saturn had superior hardware. When programmed properly it could blow away the PSX; however, the PSX games always looked better. This is silly.

Past Gen we had:
PS2 ports worse then the Dreamcast
Gamecube ports worse than the Dreamcast

I for see a lot of sloppy ports, some which look worse than what is available on the 360 and PS3.

PS: I've also not seen anything that looks as good better then the Last of Us yet.

I would say Wii has better games than PS3, at least as far as exclusives are concerned; it has better exclusives than 360 and PS3 combined;

anyhow, by your notion PS2 should be as expensive as PS3 and PC should be at least a couple of times more expensive?

And yet, millions of PS3's and 360's have been sold this year.
for the first 2 quarters, 360 had the lowest shipment this year since 2007;

Shadow on the side is a little off. I wrote a guide that makes more accurate boxes if you want to clean this up some more. I'd lose the inner-shadow on the logo since any effects on the logo are strictly against most branding guidelines.

The inner shadow on the logo was supposed to look like the logo was cut out on the outer box, and the blue and grey colors come from the inner box :p

The box shadow was actually stolen from an official Wii box
