Shattered Horizon | The Official Thread - Firepower Update, free weekend (6/3/10)

Is this one of the first games to recommend a quad core cpu?

It may be recommended (I'm not sure if it's the first), but it's definitely not necessary. My rig runs it perfectly, max settings, no AA, 1600x900 all at a nearly perfect 30fps. I'm running a Core 2 Duo @ 3.2Ghz, Radeon 4850 512mb, and 2gb DDR2-800 RAM.

Q and E for rotation, space and ctrl for up and down. I think, at least that's how I'd want it.

You hold down the right mouse button and move your mouse to rotate. It works much better than q/e would. BTW default Q is switch grenade type, and E is launch grenade. Shift is move down, space is move up.

Just noticed that it's touch and go for me on the min requirements. My CPU is like one speed bump below. Probably still run.

The one thing that left me absolutely astounded was the suit shutdown key. With the press of a button, your suit will shut down and stop responding. You will no longer have the ability to anchor to surfaces, or use jets for propulsion and stabilization (firing your weapon sends you flying in the opposite direction). The benefit of this tremendous vulnerability is stealth. You are invisible on radar when the suit is powered down.

The jaw dropping part of a suit shutdown is the presentation. Once you power down, you lose everything. The HUD dissolves away, the game chat disappears, and the audio drops out (the suit simulates audio since sound waves cannot travel in space). Once you’ve powered down, the only things you can hear are muffled gunfire from your weapon, your breathing, and your heartbeat. Everything else is completely silent. It is a stunning thing to experience in a game.

This bit sounds awesome!

I read about that the other day too. Between that and seeing the latest video it made this a must buy :D

That happened for me as well... after restarting Steam it worked though. About to play it for the first time! I'll come back with impressions soon.

Shit, good thing I didn't pick it up :lol

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand back to regrets.

Yup, that did it!

Why does it show a "ShatteredHorizon Beta" under the actual game?

This is one of those games where it pays to play on a pair of great headphones/and or fuck awesome speakers. Music is great but the first time I hit the button to shut suit off with my cans on...:D

Hehe, can't wait... :) Downloading off of Steam right now - 12% done.

The developers have been posting in forums all over the nets with all kinds of information.

I really like it when they respond to questions, insta-bought.

HOLY SHIT ONLY 20 BUCKS!

Yea, the first time your last base is being assaulted and you effectively shut down a rush with a well placed ice grenade to create cover and then an EMP to shut them down and some burst of machine gun fire? <3

Or hiding in an asteroid field with your suit off watching them come over for your base. <3

Going to open fraps, see what kinda frames im getting and take some shots for you guys.

It's some kind of Steam error, I ran Windows 7 64-bit throughout the entire beta without any problems.

Man, this is going to take some getting used to. :lol

Hah, it sure does. Took me a few days to get my bearings straight

Some quick not so fancy shots. Everything max @1680x1050

One of the guys on my team was freaking out because he realized the map was moving :lol

:lol Has to be a mistake.

I beta tested the game entirely on 64-bit OS's.

EDIT: Blah beaten.
But um... yeah. Pretty decent game - I love the premise and some of the other innovations... but as a whole I wasn't a fan of the camp-friendly gameplay.

It really suprised me how quickly I got used to the 3d movement in this, though that may be all those years of I-War and such.

Tokubetsu: System specs?

I'm playing on a i7 920 @ 4Ghz and a 4890, runs ok on max settings, but I'm getting some slowdowns now and then.

This game is so fucking fun, although I'm a little disappointed in how it runs on my computer.

i7 920
Radeon 4890
6 GB DDR3 RAM

It runs completely flawless with max settings and 4x AA at lower resolutions like 1280x800 but when I run it at 1680x1050 it seems to be at 30 FPS when nothing is going on but drops to what seems like 15ish FPS during fire fights and geometrically demanding areas of the map. I'm going to keep experimenting with visual settings to see if I can't get a smoother frame rate at higher resolutions.

Having said that, it still looks fucking amazing at resolutions like that. Arc is my favorite level so far. One thing I really wish is to be able to choose your grenade type (as in, assign a grenade type to the number keys) as opposed to cycling through the grenades. I suppose it is a balance thing but it's annoying having to always check to see what grenade type I have chosen and if I have the right grenade when I click the cycle button.

Awesome game though, definitely loving it :D

Do you think you could help me out with over clocking my i7? It's currently running at stock clock speed (2.66Ghz) but has the turbo setting on so I'm sure during intense gaming sessions it automatically OC's to 3Ghz. I've never overclocked before and any help would be appreciated.

Q9650, 6 gigs of ram and dual 4870. That one satellite map with the asteroid belt was a huge hit though but that might be because for some reason it alt tabbed etc.

Yeah, running this on:

Core 2 Duo 2.66 ghz
GTX 260
6 GB RAM

I had to turn everything down or off to get a playable framerate.

phenom ii x2 550 (stock)
radeon hd 4890 (stock)
4 gigs of ram
windows 7, 64-bit

all settings maxed @ 1680 x 1050, steady 30-60 fps. (closer to 60)
vsync / anti-aliasing : disabled.

Do you use the stock-cooler? If so you can't overclock that much (to make it profitable) due to the overheating problems. But if you do have a third-party cooler, I would recommend looking for a guide!

I could tell you how to overclock (and use the same values as I use e.g) but there is no guarantee it will work for you, as the overclocking depends on a series of different factors (like RAM-speed, MB, cooling and the processor itself).

Maybe I should try disabling AA, if you can get 30-60 fps at that resolution I should have no problem.

Yeah, uh ... I'm not really good with system specs and stuff, is there some way I could get a benchmark to find out how well my rig can handle this game?

You could also click on the picture of the hardware requirements image in the OP and it links to that benchmark. :P (I probably should make that more clear, but oh well).

Edit: I wish the music was actually in-game, it's just so good.

The enemy's gate IS down.

Wow looks like a pretty cool game but watching the gameplay trailer linked in the OP I feel like I'm getting motion sickness, maybe its just me since I am cooling off after my run for the day (Damn daylight savings making me run in the dark!)

Wow. Imagine this on my GTS250 512MB + Q6600.

Well, maybe after getting my HD5850... :D

I'm running this at about 30-60 FPS at 720p on a 130 inch projector with surround sound. The resolution is low by PC standards but looks stunning with all of the effects turned up and seeing the view of earth from orbit is a sight to behold. This game is just kickass, nothing beats blasting an ice grenade way ahead of you, kicking on your boosters and switching off your suit to glide parallel to the ISS, starting your suit switch on sequence right before passing through your ice cloud and it coming on just as you ambush an oblivious enemy. The muffled sounds of when your suit is off is so great and I love the concept of your suit simulating sounds to keep the game realistic.

Also, I feel like this is something I should know, but what's with the "Remember, the enemy gate is down" comments?

Wow, according to there evaluation, I BARELY meet the minimum specs. I had been running every game I have maxed out until this.

Ender's Game reference. I didn't even catch that reference until you mentioned it, though I was probably kinda reminded of it by the 0-gravity stuff. :lol

It looks interesting and I love that they released it for $20, but my core 2 duo and 4850 probably couldn't handle it. :(

I have an E8400 @ 3.0 Ghz, 4870, 4 gigs DDR2 1066.

I run it at everything max except no AA at 1920x1200 at a solid 30 FPS.

It is a pretty neat game, I don't expect it to last long since it doesn't have much substance, but I think it was $20 well spent.

had a quick play around on an empty server during my lunch break. controlling your character takes some getting used to, but I can't imagine it'd be possible any other way. shift and spacebar to move down and up, right-click and drag to roll all work well together. i also like the tradeoff between attaching to a surface for better accuracy, but moving slower.

looking forward to having a proper play after work in a server with some people.

Just don't get discouraged if you get killed a lot at first, especially since there are a lot of Shattered Horizon players out there who played the beta and many have been playing all day. You really need to think differently and mind your surroundings. Flying head long into a firefight will definitely ensure a swift demise (although you may take a couple enemies with you) so try to maximize your coverage by staying close to obstacles/moving from cover point to cover point.

Also it took me a while before I realized the longer you hold down the grenade button, the further it goes. Although there seems to be a fine line between it detonating right in front of your face, and a mile away, so that takes some getting used to.

This is definitely one of those games where rushing to the firefight is NOT what you want to do. Take the long way around, it pays off and you'll usually run into the smarter players there as well. Friendly AND unfriendly.

Looks pretty awesome! anything set in space gets me all the time. Ill buy tonight and give it a whirl, fuck got so many games atm, Torchlight, Dragon-age being only two of them, too little time!:lol

it pre-loaded super quick for me yesterday. didnt get a chance to play before bed/work though. cant wait to check it out when i get home.
