Both S1 & 2 have non-Asian characters. Mark in particular in S1. I never could figure out what race Tom was supposed to be. There are also many unnamed henchmen that are white. I fail to see how S3 will be much different.

Pretty much all of the Mad Angels are foreigners. I guess one of the villages is supposed to be a big tourist stop anyway so it's not weird that there'll be a white person here or there.

on the plus side, a lot of those tiers didn't really go. chobu was a touristy port town from the start, so it's not all that atmosphere breaking to have stuff like the guestbook or pictures in the port. only one person took the lucky hit stand tier anyway.

but hey man. thanks for backing. are you going to be upping your pledge a little with the rest of us for the final blow?

But what if some pictures contain headsets, clothing or jewellery that simply shouldn't exist in 1987. Of course I trust the development team to filter such things but the precedent is what i have a problem with. I could accept being rendered as an NPC but when it is actual messages and real life faces of 2015, I begin to question how it can be controlled.

Also, no I don't think so. I would rather wait and fund it proper when it actually comes out. Will probably double or triple-dip and buy any release merchandise (would love a Shenmue Ps4 for example).

ryo had a sega saturn in 1986

don't worry about it. seriously. it'll be fine. it'll be an easter egg for backers.

@CedricBiscay With all due respect Cedric, the last rewards are useless. We need rewards that are less than 500$ that people can afford :S

@AlexiaHewson I know and I am doing my best in order to reach your expectations.

Apparently that "new trailer" is still in the works.

Not sure how much of an impact that can have at this point in the campaign unless it's amazing and has new Shenmue 3 concept footage or something.

Talk about cutting it fine. A new trailer detailing the past two games plus some sub $500
tiers were needed weeks ago, not now near the end of the campaign.

Yeah. I like the idea of backers being represented in the game in this way. That's how we got Shenmue 3.

I hope these names, messages, faces, chibi toys, NPC's, etc can be incorporated in a manner that doesn't adversely effect the immersion and feel of the game.

yu suzuki's attention for atmosphere is part of what made the original shenmue's location so memorable. we'll be fine.

Did anyone ever win the Saturn games in the lottery game?

Yeah, I managed to win both but it took a while... I spent most of my time on one playthrough spending all my money on chocolate just so I could win that Dural toy from the corner shop in Sakuraoka. Didn't get the damn thing, and to make things worse you can't visit the shop once you start going to the docks as you arrive home after the shop closes...

Cedric teasing that bomb on twitter still. What's the deal, mang?!?

Yeah reading through his Twitter now he's emphasising the potential bomb or bombs that might be coming for the final forty eight hours:

@CedricBiscay Drop the bomb already, the suspension is killing us and we're not getting any younger!

@CedricBiscay More to come? We need something to get a big push on the final few days...

Guess him and Awesome Japan have something powerful planned for the campaign's end?

Theyre leaving it a bit sodding late for a final push. AwesomeJapan really shouldnt have been the 3rd, 4th, or 5th choice for this. Community is doing a much better job externally.

Have YsNet talked if the trial version will turn into the final version of the game later on?
If yes, the 100$ tier could net the Physical and Digital version

Yeah. I like the idea of backers being represented in the game in this way. That's how we got Shenmue 3.

Thing about that quoted example is that many foreigners would have naturally been present in Yokosuka as it's a key Japanese port city as well as being the headquarters for the US Seventh Fleet, as seen in Shenmue.

HK too was a key trading hub in the Asia-Pacific region so would also naturally have westerners wandering about. Guilin OTOH was, and still is quite a remote, isolated region of China that wouldn't have wide eyed westerners wandering about let alone Japanese teenagers.

I accept a certain amount of artistic licence is prevalent in Shenmue but the series has made authenticity and realism a key part of it which I hope is replicated in 3.

I have faith in Yu but I hope the more limited funding doesn't impede his efforts in integrating the KS rewards into the game.

I did, Space Harrier. It was quite cool going home, plopping the CD into the Saturn and playing it. Lovely.

no but it's unlikely

the trial version may be an exclusive "what's shenmue?" style demo though, so it might still be worth getting for a sneak peak alone.

I never knew that, you learn something new everyday!

It was also released on a compilation disc for the North American and European Sega Saturn called Sega Ages Vol. 1. Which also includes Out Run, After Burner II and Space Harrier. They were really nice ports that were not emulated. Hang-On was probably made super rare in Shenmue as some sort of joke, as it never did get a Sega Ages release.

It was just Hang-On and Space Harrier I think? I remember winning Hang-On once but I think they were super rare to get. Not that they ever came out for the Saturn in real life of course.

once and only once

same with the boombox

kinda hope shenmue 3 has a lottery. i want to be infuriated enough to buy more merchandise over and over until i get the prize i want.

Whoa, so it wasn't impossible. The best I got was 3rd prize and always wondered whether Ryo could actually start them at home.

I'd love some sort of marketplace implemented where in game items like capsule toys and other crap could be swapped with other players or even sold, much like Steam's marketplace which if Yu were to somehow get 3 on Steam could earn Ys.net quite a bit of revenue thanks to marketplace fees on all transactions.

I understand something like that was actually implemented in Shenmue Passport which had some great online features that are now sadly gone since the end of the DC's network service. :(

that'd be a neat feature. yu did say he was thinking about online features but it depends on the budget. i think there will at least be a market for the single player stuff anyway. need to buy the fishing gear somewhere i guess.

i'm totally looking forward to that by the way. i love fishing mini-games. twilight princess' one is probably my favourite but i feel shenmue 3 could easily overtake it. it suits the shenmue feel, y'know?

I'm seriously contemplating importing Shenmue 2 on Xbox through ebay for like $70 and playing it through a wonky 360 emulator.
Don't make me do it, Sega.

Whatever happened to my original copy anyway? Dammit.

nearly 800 backers and closing on 90k for the day. three hours left.

Theyre leaving it a bit sodding late for a final push. AwesomeJapan really shouldnt have been the 3rd, 4th, or 5th choice for this. Community is doing a much better job externally.

Awesome. :) Going to do my quick and rough math again to see where we stand. Previously we were at 75K after 18 hours calculating an estimated total of 100K for the day at that speed. Now at 90K for the day after 21 hours we can calculate an estimated total of 103K for the day. So funding is getting a little faster. Hopefully momentum will continue to accelerate and eventually in the final hours it'll be a fucking tidal wave. And yeah to answer the second poster above they're leaving the potential mega-update they have planned too late here.

We're rapidly approaching the final two days now. They need to execute their plan ASAP.

Do you think the game will have a physical release in stores?

With the current trend in the KS looking to end around $6 million, would that money also goes towards the physical distribution? I am not sure on the costs behind such, but I would assume it can be quite costly considering production costs of the disc and packaging. From what I may have read, Sony is assisting in Shenmue's advertising, correct? If that is the case, does that also include physical production, which should allow all the KS money to go towards development.

On the other hand, if production costs have to be covered by Ys Net, would one assume that MAYBE the only chance to get a physical release is to back the KS?

I have been a gaf lurker for at least 5 years, can't believe I finally get to post and in a Shenmue III thread no less.

Pledged $175 on day two of the campaign. Would up it if there was a tier between that and $250.

Feel slightly disillusioned by all the "put your...face | name | message | shop " in the game. I fear it may break immersion. Especially if we have peoples photographic faces on lucky hit stands et al.

Think the campaign will not reach beyond 5.5 Million. I am fine with that.

Hey man, tthanks for backing!
You pretty much summed up what most people are feeling, although I think that the in game stuff wont be that weird. Like all the names will be converted to Hanzi, and messages will be confined to a guest book in one location, so I don't beleive it will break immersion. Fingers crossed there are just as many NPC's, with backstories to balance it out.

I won space harrier once
I didn't like it that much so never really playd it

I love this, it's like the initial opening days of the KS campaign when you could see the pledge ticker going ↑ ↑ ↑. And moving on 4.9 million. Come on!

we don't know what the arrangement is right now for the game actually get a physical release in stores. what we do know is that the KS money is going mainly to YS.net to make the game, fulfilling backer rewards, and of course KS get their cut on top of that.

While we don't know the exact details of the agreements Ys.net have with Sony and Shibuya it seems (at least to me) that Shenmue III's actual development will be funded through KS and whatever post KS funding methods are in place. Once development has ended Sony will handle PS4 publishing and distribution while Shibuya will look after the PC port.

It could be a good arrangement for all concerned as Suzuki only needs to worry about the actual game development while other parties can sort out the logistics of getting the game to players. Presumably Shibuya and Sony will be paid for their work with a cut of any sales.

Great little spike in momentum. I get sneaky feeling tomorrow could be a big day for the campaign.

The Dojo have but up video "What's Shenmue- History from the official website. It's interesting watching it especially the 'Play mode' section to see the camera/control configuration they used pre dual analogue set-ups.
