Shift can beat 'sterile Gran Turismo 5' - EA

Just saw this while perusing the news. After reading Amar's impression of the car handling, physics etc for GT5 I think EA has a lot of work for themselves.

i hv the gt5 prolouge, hv been waiting for the real deal gt5 for long;
but i hv been stopped playing the prolouge for long time
since i found out need for speed shift is better!
more on speed, and most important i could be SHIFTING, that gt5 doesnt offer!!
gt5 is more concentrate on reality, so alot of the time u will be driving in real driving speed, which for playing racing game, is too slow (+ no drifting);
since up till now juz the vibrate controller (or my abandoned logitech wheel), 52" lcd + 5.1 sound dont really get me the real driving feeling yet, not untill the 3D gaming comes out
but sure i will still order it, why waiting right

Aim for the stars EA. Aim for the stars.

A shift game focused completely on the sim aspects and cockpit view, locked at 30fps has a good chance to be profitable. Not GT5 profitable, but profitable enough.

I loved NFS: Shift (still do). Just wished it focused further on the sim side rather than arcade. To this day I still have fun running Nurburgring, and it controls just fine with a controller which is a solid plus in my book.

I once saw an amazing video of NFS Shift on PC with a mod to make it more real, if EA uses parts of that mod the the sequel then they will most definitely beat GT5 when it comes to the reality aspect of driving a high powered racing car.
60fps is a must though.

Another interview and more attacks toward other racing games

Eurogamer: Eurogamer interviewed EA driving and shooting boss Patrick Solderlund recently, and he said his vision for the Shift series is for it to be the market leader in the authentic sim category and beat Gran Turismo and Forza at their own game. As the creator of Shift, how do you do that?

Andy Tudor: Those two games are on pedestals at the moment. When we're thinking about what we want to do in this game, it's not a numbers game. We're not going to add a thousand irrelevant cars. Both those games, to me, are almost like encyclopaedias. You've got a thousand cars, a thousand tracks, whatever, and basically the game is about earning cash to get another car, earning cash to get another car. It's like a grind. It's almost like stamp collecting.

That's not where the fun is. The fun is behind the wheel, feeling you're on the edge, pushing it to the limit, putting in the cars that are relevant and cool to drive, allowing you to completely customise those from factory to the works level we had in Shift 1, and giving you the chance to then play against your friends in a social way.

Taking Autolog, which is present in Hot Pursuit, to the next level, adding more features and making the core gameplay really fun as opposed to just adding five variations of the 1986 Toyota Corolla or something like that.

From what we've found, most people have 10-15 cars in their garage anyway. They have the first car they ever buy in career, they have a car they potentially own, a Ford Focus or a Golf or something like that, and then whatever game you talk about, whether it's got classes like Forza or licences like GT or tiers like Shift 1, people usually get a car from each tier or each category in the game. And then they get their dream car, the car they've always wanted, a Ferrari or a Lamborghini or a Porsche. That's seven right there.

Then, generally, people fill out the rest with cars they want to try out, like a Dodge Challenger, that they may not have access to. So people have 10-15 cars anyway. They certainly don't fill their garage up with every single car there is in the game – all 500 of them.

It's a different way of thinking, basically. We want to take those guys on. We want to make a more authentic experience. We've put in a new elite handling model and given you more access over deadzone, sensitivity, steering aids, break assists, all that kind of stuff, to allow you to dial in the experience you want.

We all come from different backgrounds. You may love muscle cars and might think Burnout is the best game in the world. I may like Japanese tuner cars, and may think Hot Pursuit is the best game in the world. We have very different views on racing, so we want to make sure everyone is able to get the experience they want from it.

I can't help but feel he just compared apples directly to a reflection in a mirror of those same apples.

Anyway, I'm not going to get mad at them having a go at GT and Forza, so long as they're willing to step up and show us what they've got... none of us lose in the end. Odd that anyone would get angry about this.

Lol, EA you can be so funny.

Well...Shift 2 will have night racing on Spa. That's good.

But I didn't know Shift was now a simulator. This is extraordinary.

I love the collecting aspect of sim games so screw you and your powered by dew game, guy.

Let the game do the talking. Didn't enjoy the demo for the first one at all.

No.

Need for Speed is the biggest racing franchise out there, with total sales beating Gran Turismo by a pretty wide margin, but none of the individual entries sells as much as a GT mainline entry. Not even close.
Hasn't there been a lot more NFS games?

Heh.

The career mode in Shift was boring as fuck and playing the top end cars in Shift doesn't even feel fun. The driving model in that game was broken and full of glitches.

I honestly don't see how they can make the game 'realistic' whilst being 'fun' at the same time.

I think GT's driving model is perfect in that regard - it's got the balance of both.

Personally you can't compete with GT and Forza on consoles unless you aim for 60fps, while you are at 30 frames you will not be trying to be the best sim you can be in my eyes.

I'm guessing you haven't raced at night in the wet or seen trial mountain/any of the many ported tracks yet.

I'm 50 hours into the game. yes I've raced those tracks. ridiculously detailed and polished like the 'Ring or LeMans? no they aren't. But definitely not "downright ugly".

If the choice was to have trial mountain and deep forest in the game as GT4 ports or not to have them at all, I'll take the former. Fantastic courses to drive. Also, the monkey is back in TM.

This min-maxing bullshit in games criticism really annoys the hell out of me.

How the hell can adding choice and content actually depreciate the value of a product? By that I mean anyone who rates down GT5 for including non-premium vehicles needs a reality check.

Does that mean we should start retroactively downmarking games because the DLC isn't up to scratch?

Its just DUMB.

do you mean to compare the Majority of the Cars in both games or just the premium versions ? :lol

Why not just take into account that GT5 has over 200 premium models while Shift had 65 cars in total? So you might not want to go there.

Metalmurphy said:
Premiums ofc, which is still in bigger number then the total cars in shift
HEY! Shift has 60 cars, OK! There are quite a few repeats like four BMW M3, two BD9, two Evolutions, three 911 and shitload of Nissans; but hey, there are 60 cars, OK! 100% premium!

Sure, GT5 has 1000 cars and 200 or them are the most detailed models in any game out there but it has 20% premium cars! It also has 700 Skylines, 100 Evolutions and 200 Accords!

100% > 20% therefore Shift wins!

I think something must have made me retarded, but I'm actually kind of excited about Shift 2 after reading those Eurogamer articles. Would love to see a video of those cockpit views.

No day one for me. I'll wait for detailed impressions before buying again.

Hmm I don't know if you've actually played Shift but that's not really how it is.

Anyway I know this is a jump-down-EA's-throat kind of thread but I can't say I disagree with them about the sterile car collecting nature of GT5. Some people want that out of their racing game, but I don't. I think Shift does a lot of really interesting things with the POV and everything and the races are a lot of fun, but it's not a simulation and it should be geared to the more casual market.

It will be interesting to see where EA takes Shift. It seems they are taking a more simulation approach as its no longer under the Need For Speed umbrella.

It is though, the boxart was posted earlier and it still says Need for Speed on it.

To help sales it is, but the game name is "Shift 2 unleashed" like how modern warfare 2 carries the call of duty part to it's name.

The console ports of the first Shift game were horrendous. Poor graphics at 30fps (particularly on the PS3). Anyway, does this mean the second Shift game will have ugly filters that ruin the graphics? I had enough of that shit from those idiots at Codemasters who keep insisting on putting a horrid yellow filter in every racing game they make.

The screens that they've released so far make it look like all the filters are back. The only thing different so far is the night racing and the helmet cam where you've got an outline of a racers helmet around the screen when you're in the cockpit view.

Now that the reviews weren't perfect, everyone is trying to shit on GT5. Everyone except consumers who will make this game a huge success.
