Any fans of Shiina Ringo around? Shiina Ringo is my favourite Japanese musician, and one of my favourite artists overall. Yeah, her voice can be an aquired taste (Though I can't imagine her songs being sung well by anyone else), but her music is unique and has this funky jazziness to it which is awesome. My inability to describe music beyond 'it's great!' and 'it's terrible!' is showing here, and I feel guilty for not starting some large hundred thousand word tribute thread covering every single song of hers, but I wanted to know if she has a few fans on GAF.

I'm not a huge fan of Tokyo Jihen, the band that she's currently in. The songs are OK, but not amazing like her solo work.

Favourite Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen songs, in no particular order:

It's like gogo7188 with electrical violin thrown in there, and more melodic.

Her voice is kinda odd, but I like it. Very enka-ish.

I like Shiina Ringo too, got the album with "Yami ni Furu Ame" on it and I love it :D

About her voice, it's indeed a bit odd but the way she does the R's is grrrreat!

I like "Temporary Virgin" and her duet with Utada. Her English seems pretty good, and she was more subdued in that song. I think I prefer her that way.

I-no was designed based on Shiina Ringo. If you didn't know Guilty Gear is nothing but a collection of musical references.

Oh god, I love Shiina...


Her live concert Dynamite Out! Is probably one of the best live performances I've seen by a Japanese artist. Highly recommended.

Listened to her a hell of a lot a few years ago. Kinda got tired though. I felt that the second Tokyo Jihen album didn't really click with me and after that I kinda got fazed out of her stuff. Oh, and I cleaned out my music library so I killed her off instantly.

Honnou, Sounan, Gunjo Biyori, Meisai, Gips and Yer Blues are probably my faves.

I was in Japan when Honnou came out, I was smitten. That song was motherfucking *everywhere*.


edit: she also has that 'I'm so crazy that I'll kill you while we're fucking' thing that makes her hot as hell. I wish she hadn't gotten the mole removed.

I'm pretty sure she didn't get the mole removed. Probably just photoshopped out in some of the pics.

Yeah, she's hot as hell in a crazy kind of way. I love it.

I just checked through some of them up to '06 and '07, and the mole is clearly there.

I think you're arguing about two different moles. The one she had removed in 2003 was above her lip near her nose.

I like her style. I'm a big Go!Go!7188 fan and her style has similarities so it was easy for me to get into her music.

One other artist who is like Shiina Ringo and Go!Go!7188 is Kojima Mayumi. I recently discovered Kojima's music after she did the Ghost Hound OP.

Reviving this thread for a bit, to see if there are any more fans. But mainly: I just obtained the Watashi to Houden B-Side collection, and as I haven't listened to 90 per cent of her B-Sides, it's like listening to a whole new solo album! Suberidai and Memai are awesome.

I used to love her a few years back,Now I still think she's great but I'm not as addicted as I used to be.I think its because of Tokyo Jihen and there style being different.

She's beautiful and I love her strange voice. I know a few people that absolutely hate her voice though.

I remember reading an interview with her a while ago when she stated 3 people she would like to kill. Very strange

I can totally understand why people would lose interest in her. Instead of evolving from the SS and KZK albums, she continued with the relatively safe Tokyo Jihen route. It's a pity, because I thought that those two albums were masterpieces. I enjoy her newer music, but man...

OK, just so I have an excuse to bump the thread, the queen of Japanese music is releasing a new single and album on June 24. Before that, on May 27, she'll be releasing a new single, Ariamaru Tomi containing the A-Side Ariamaru Tomi (Written for some shitty J-Drama), and B-Side, Superficial Gossip. Both songs will NOT be on the new album, and the B-Side will give us an idea as to how the album will sound.

Allegedly, this album will be influenced by Showa Jazz, or something. And if what I heard is true, Tokyo Jihen is now on hold while she resumes her solo career. This is terrific news, as her solo work is a million times more ambitious (and better) than the Tokyo Jihen stuff.

Yeah.

The old Shiina's actually my favourite musician, so this is major news to me. It used to be a tad embarassing, because of what 'Japanese music' represents to some people, but she is (was?) an extremely talented musician, Japanese or not.

I hope the old Shiina is back!

I really like her, she's one of the best japanese artist as far as I'm concerned (I still like Aya more tho, too bad she basically disappeared).
