Shin Megami Tensei 4 (NA version) first-pressing bonuses announced

I was probably going to cave and pre-order at the inflated price anyways, but I didn't pre-order day 1 as I do with most other SMT games. But I probably would have paid 60 for this as a "Special Edition," so now I feel okay paying 50. Atlus must have psychology majors doing their marketing!

Well, I'm a fan of
Persona
, but I haven't played any of the DS SMT games. I've just never really played a pure dungeon crawler before. I've heard that the mainline games are relatively light on plot, and I prefer heavy narratives in my RPGs to balance out the repetition and grind, and I'm not so sure SMT IV, especially with its kinda janky 3D world/2D battle, is gonna pull me in.

SMT4 is described as a Drama/RPG, so I don't think it'll be light on narrative. I would not expect P4G levels of chatter, but it should certainly have enough chatter to satisfy a JRPG enthusiast.

Oh? Interesting. I was under the impression that, say, Nocturne was the hardcore traditional dungeon crawler light on plot while Digital Devil Saga was made to be a more narrative-heavy SMT, and that SMT IV will be more in the vein of Nocturne.

Honestly, the storylines in the mainline SMT games are far more darker than what's usually explored in Persona games, so I wouldn't really worry about this being light on plot nor as lighthearted as say Persona 4.

Well, SMT's always been strong on the plot front, we're not talking Etrian Odyssey here or something (though even that has its moments), though I do kind of expect this will be more talky than SMT:N was.

SMT4 definitely appears to be far more dialogue/interaction heavy than Nocturne (and hell, even DDS). We won't know for sure for like a month, I suppose, but right now the way they're presenting it, it feels far more character driven than SMT3.

strongly encourage you to check out the devil survivor games (first one - 'overclocked' on the 3ds - in particular). if you liked p3/4, you'll probably like them. lots of story/chat, & different endings...

Alright guys, should I preorder this or get Soul Hackers? I've never played a Shin Megami Tensei game before, but I really want a new rpg to add to my 3DS game collection.

Yeah, I was worried that it'd only be a bit more talkative than Etrian Odyssey, which I'm finding difficult to get into due to the lack of plot. All of this is pretty reassuring though.

I've thought about it, but the artstyle just puts me off so much. I don't dislike anime or anything (I love Soejima's Persona art), but the Devil Survivor character designs are just that off-putting to me. I also have too many 3DS games right now anyway.

Soul Hackers is pretty boss, definitely give it a shot. Should pass the time till SMT4 is out.

Soul Hackers is freaking sick.

Get that then get SMTIV when it comes out too.

So the answer: both.

Well, SMT:N was "more is less" and if they deviate too far from that I may be disappointed, but we'd just have to wait and see anyway.

I have a question guys. This is my first time playing this series(planning). Is it okay for me to do that? Will I miss something important if I jump to SMTIV directly without playingit's predecessors'?

There are connections, but you won't miss out on IV's plot happenings without prior knowledge. You'll be okay!

This game looks like it'll be a great place to start.

Haven't played any SMGT game ever. Are battles the standard turn based JRPG fair, or is there anything to mix it up? Gameplay looked a little similar to the Etrian Odyssey IV demo I played, so far as the first person battles went. Is that an accurate comparison? This limited run looks really slick and if it's something I'd be interested in I don't want to miss out.

Pre-ordered today as well.

I was going to eventually anyway, but after seeing the spoils I wanted to make sure that I don't end up on the old amazon wait list.

What separates SMT from others is its demons. Yes, they are superficially like Pokemon, but there are many systems central to gameplay that allow you to mash 'em (fusion), bash 'em (the Press Turn System that gives a heavy focus on elemental weaknesses and resistances), or just have some good old fashioned conversation. Since the demons are your party members, success rides on how you decide to use them. Demon fusion in particular is hard for new players, but fusion in recent games has been very lenient and the included strategy guide with the first press will undoubtedly be able to show you the ropes of what is a very central system that's incredibly rewarding once you get the hang of it.

I don't even have a 3DS and I pre-ordered it from Amazon. I guess I'll have to buy one sometime this year :/

I'm starting to think/hope that the $50 ends up less "it's suicide if we release at $40" and more "it gets us lots and lots of cash." Especially as they're including more that immediately indicates it's worth $50 and Index's current bad situation (I almost wonder if they'd just straight up reform as Atlus proper, akin to Infogrames becoming Atari fully? Except with actual ATLUS at its core?)

Went to preorder, and see the game has already shot up to #1 on Amazon, wow.

Whoa you're right! Did everyone else bandwagon or are these people actual fans of SMT?

I bandwagoned but before today's announcement. Started from Persona series, and now this is my first SMT game.

Probably people on the edge or people that were going to wait and see before they pre-ordered (to see bonuses, etc). Now that the bonuses are out (and quite good ones at that), I assume most people are going in to preorder it right now rather than wait

I wonder what will happen if Atlus does/doesn't lower the price on the digital version. I think they can't win either way.

Any word if anything will be cut from the japanese version? I'm buying the version with more stuff in it, no matter how minute.

Well this version will probably cut the Japanese audio track and text. But worry not as English script takes up far more room, so if nothing is different the English version wins by default!

Call me crazy, but I'm still going to wait until it comes out in Japan and read reviews/impressions of it before putting down my money. I haven't played a mainline SMT, and $50 is a lot to ask without impressions of the full game.

Play a SMT game, and then call yourself crazy. :P

Most SMT games and every related game (e.g Persona games) has been very good IMO, it's very rare to find a bad game from them.

Holy sh...I thought you just meant #1 in 3DS games. Turns out it's #1 in EVERYTHING videogaming right now. Screencap for posterity:

(Good to see Luigi's Mansion doing so well too!)

Fair enough. If they are identical I would probably get the English version for convenience. I also hope that the English version doesn't come with crashing bugs as an extra surprise.

Well that's for now because of the news, if it stays there then Atlus is gonna get a lot of money! :D

Hopefully they use some of it to make Persona 5 even better.

Atlus deserves this. After the shit-show that SE has become, we deserve better. Atlus not only gives us awesome games, that aren't cut to pieces for DLC sales, but they give us more than most publishers. They deserve to be rewarded. They produce an awesome product that is worth the asking price and then they add in a bunch of extra stuff to make our purchase feel worthwhile. Other pubs should start taking notes.

Agreed 100%.

If you preorder at Amazon, you can always cancel before release with no issue at all.

No, you're right. No DLC, they just charge a higher price than every other game for that console on the market...
