Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne's 13th Anniversary

Woah woah woah! Really? people hated the fusion system of SMTIV? I love Nocturne and all but I really don't like its fusion system anymore after the ones used in the modern titles. I have my own personal preference in terms of how to do fusion, but the different search features and functions, then the direct purchasing of demons from compendium during fusion are among the features that I don't want to give up and I want them on future games as well.

I guess I just have a different playstyle when it comes to this that I came to like the fusion in modern titles more.

IV is arguably the best fusion system yet... for ease of use. But there's a certain level of charm to being limited when making certain demons, like knowing if I make a Titania, bolt magic isn't an option(for example), so I'd better focus on other crucial skills.

Do you all obsessively keep demons alive for boss fights or do you not care and just win even with casualties?

I beat Matador but muh pixie missed out on the exp cuz she died.

Throw wave after wave of my own men demons at them until they go down.

Really though, usually everyone lives or there's one casualty at the most.

Too stubborn to let Pixie die so I redid the Matador fight. Fused Nekomata which required lvl 18 so did some small grinding. Nothing serious. I got both Sukukaja and Rakukaja on her which is great.

At 1st Kalpa now. Taking things nice and slow. Going back to save and heal consistently.

It's extremely useful, but it's a little too easy to break the game over your knee in IV.

I think if they rework the system somehow, like limiting inheritable skills or the quality of skills in some way (like based on the type of demon you're fusing? or something?) it could be helped while keeping the far better ease of use.

When it says a demon is trying to change one of it's skills, is there any way of knowing which skill it is trying to change?

Just had my pixie change dia into needle storm... had to reload.

Demons wanting to change skills is something I've been wanting to find out for a long time – does denying them (as they scream in anguish) actually have any negative effects like reduced affinity? This happens in Persona also, and I'm equally confused about the consequences.

No negative effects.

Letting a demon change a skill is a significant risk because you have no idea what you'll get or even what you'll lose. I pretty much say no almost every time.

SMTIV fixed this by outright saying "<demon> is trying to change <skill A> into <skill B>" and it was a million times better.

Well it was really just changing a diceroll into a choice, but yeah.

If it's with a demon that doesn't have good skills or you're near a save point, I'd do it.....otherwise, yeah. It's not worth risking a good skill turning into one you'll never use. You'll get screwed most of the time.

You told that bitch "no, I don't want Life Surge to be changed! Are you stupid?!?" and give him the Hito-SHORYUKEN for even thinking of doing that.

It would never "downrank"; you'd never get Zio from a Agilao, but yeah. I got in my 4 playthrus some interesting upgrades, as you could and would occasionally get some stuff you'd be hard pressed to get from demons 5 levels above yourself at the time. (This is boosted by me often running lean on skills from fusing only a few must have skills).

Thanks! Finally the mystery is solved. I often said YES on Nocturne because I was afraid the demons would get pissed at me and maybe leave my team.

SMTIV sounds much better in that regard. Honestly, it seems kind of a weird game mechanic to throw in when the choices the demons make are totally random. Makes the demons feel less like real NPCs.

Then you bring a Null Force Magatama and laugh.

Always save before a demon levels, if you can. I think it's worth the risk, I've gotten some great stuff from the trade up(like early Mediarama from Media).

Fired it up today on my PS2. Was reminded of my HARD mode save I started years ago, hard stuff. I`m due for a replay.

Is it normal to go back and heal/save 10 times in the Labryinth of Amala? Cuz that is the only way I am makin it through this Kalpa.

Might I suggest getting some mana recovery moves?

The best thing I ever did was get mana refill on my healer.

Mana drain works for the protag.

Quick question: Can you sometimes see other Kalpas through windows even though you're in another? Because there is this room in the first Kalpa I can see but not get to. And its not the locked one either.

It's part of the first kalpa, but you unlock it through the one below, if memory serves.

I've always wanted to play his game but was scared off by the supposed difficulty. But I'm not a little bih anymore and got gud, having grown an appetite for souls games. After reading the responses in this thread praising the music, story, art, and gameplay, I'm gonna bite the bullet and order this. Can't wait to figure out how to destroy Matador.

I feel like going on a JRPG binge and I'm gonna start with this. Then play Chrono Trigger for the first time (I know I know..), sprinkle in my Pokemon addiction, feed the pain with Dark Souls III, and then cap off the summer with the goodness of Persona 5.

Thank you for feeding the hype gaf!

Heh, the Dante fight was super easy but pretty hype. I know there's more of him to come later.

Thor was super easy too. Focus is op.

I'm maybe about 3 hours ahead of that part in my play through. I had to fight Thor 3 times. And finally beating him, it was mainly because of the Focus and then weakening his defense. I got into a good groove. He wasn't hard, I just made so many stupid mistakes the other 2 times.

I might have been overlevelled cuz I spent a lot of time in the First Kalpa. Level 27 when I fought him.

Are you specializing in physical strength or magic? Or are you spreading your stats around? I'm going physical.

Played this for the first time last year, when it finally arrived on PSN. As my fifth or sixth SMT game, it was certainly lacking some of the magic. I wasn't really having difficulties outside of death spells and me forgetting to protect. If you know the mechanics this well already, you can even get down the Matador first try. But it's still great overall and as usual for SMT, it's very much its own thing in many aspects. In particular the 3D environments are still great.

Leaning more towards strength, but I've been trying to keep it fairly even. I think I was around Level 23 or 24. What really screwed me was having two demons that were weak to electricity. I got into a really bad cycle of having to heal people without actually doing much damage. But I switched up my main squad, equipped my electricity resistant magatama and it was gravy.

I'm probably going to fire the game up and mess around with the Amala Labyrinth some more. Seems like a great place to grind my demons.

Stay close to the healer if you do, Amala does not eff around. Everything is there to kill you.

Sheesh, I haven't been challenged like this in a while. Not using Bright Might is fun painful. Gonna have to earn Thor's death.

Thor is toast.

Dante wrecked me back to back, heh. Just went to town on Hitoshura.

I got my extra press turn now, so that helps. (I did all the burial chambers last cycle.)

Still my lucky charm. Not the best demon in the world, but no weaknesses is nice and she can spam Rakunda.

What the hell at that stat spread.

My own replay is nearing the end. Going for the Shijima ending this time, because I haven't done it yet. Just took out the last Fiend
before he even got to cast Evil Melody--lol NG+ with extra Press Turn and 50% off the Compendium--
and saved in the tunnel. Just
Yurakucho Tunnel, the Diet Building, and the Tower of Kagutsuchi
to go!

Daisoujou for life. Dude certainly never left my party first playthrough. Dude was a train, steamrolled through everything. Many a time against the toughest bosses/enemies it was just Demi-Fiend and Daisoujou left. And then one day Daisoujou had powered himself up with Focus too much and I let him attack and unfortunately that enemy had a reflect skill and it was bye bye Daisoujou. But he still forgave me after all that and handed me items after so many battles like a true friend. He went to bat for me so many times. *sniff*

Daisoujou, you're such a bro.

I don't think I've used this guy before.

He's probably the most useful demon in the game, purely in terms of the huge range of levels he stays viable for.

I think after beating him, I hated him so much I never used him. That or I never knew how good he was. I was still able to drag my way to TD ending.
