Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey official for US

I bought whatever was available for the three members at the auction. All of a sudden I get to that battle, have five enemies to try to take out ALONG with that dude, put the game down and haven't touched it since.

It's not the fact that the battle is hard, just unfair to have you get your ass kicked hard despite buying some demon's you think were "okay" in the first fight. :/

A party with a lot of fire spells could take down that boss very quickly.

Hell, the only part where grinding might actually be necessary is on one of the final missions on one of the harder routes.

Oh, well, that's just MegaTen.

None of the Demon's at the Auction have fire?

My party/characters were like level 5-6 or something like that.

Totally unfair battle.

Edit: And this is going off topic. I enjoyed Persona 2:IS, Persona 3, and Persona 4. Devil Survivor was trying to be a SRPG, but doing things in a SMT/1st Person Dungeon Crawl way that didn't really pander to me really.

Errr... what? DDS1 and DDS2 were both reprinted more than once each.
Sorry, meant only game that had a freebee included with it and was reprinted. I don't think the first prints of DDS1 and DDS2 had free stuff.

I'll be quiet if you find more counter examples.

I think one of the demons you can make by fusing has Agi. I think. It's been a while.

I... don't have the ability to fuse? At least, as far as I saw. I was at the end of Day One or whatever and the auction was the only way to get new demon's from what I saw.

Some of the art is a little risque. Angels with no panties and whatnot.
That's one thing I've noticed. I just played Devil Survivor again, and that game seems to use the "old" Angel design (with clothes), whereas Strange Journey uses the pretty much completely nude sadomaso design (chains, blindfold, no clothes). And I wouldn't be surprised to see more such differences. I obviously don't know for sure, but I assume stuff like this caused the M rating, as Strange Journey doesn't seem all that violent.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is not an SMT game?
What Atlus USA does to brand the games does not change reality. Persona is Megami Ibunroku, and later games dropped any franchise branding whatsoever. Persona is a spin-off series spawned from the only Shin Megami Tensei game to go anywhere near a highschool, Shin Megami Tensei If...

Strictly speaking, no. The US version is branded as such, the original Japanese game is branded as Megami Ibunroku for the first game, and drops the branding altogether with subsequent installments, simply going with "Persona".

It's as much an SMT game as SaGa I/II/III are Final Fantasy games.

Yeah they did. First print of DDS came with the box for both plus OST, and DDS2 came with an OST*.

*DDS 2's OST might have been a pre-order thing, I forget.

Digital Devil Saga 1 came in a Deluxe Box with soundtrack and two-game slipcase to hold the sequel when it came out. DDS2 came with a music CD if you preordered. Both were reprinted sans freebies.

...I'm sorry! I didn't mean to be so nitpicky! :lol

What we think/know it is is irrelevant, what he did is. Maybe I was wrong, maybe not.

The point was that you can safely play any of the core SMT games and not find that sort of thing.

High school, sure, but those damnable teenagers sfried fears so are all over the place! In SMT1, you're a teenager whose mom wakes you up in the morning, after which you go say hi to your cute next-door neighbor and then head to the mall! SMT2 is clean of the teenager menace, but in SMT3 you play as another teenager who meets up with not one but TWO other teenagers while heading to (shudder) Shibuya!

The horror of it all. :(

What are the chances of Atlus spoiling us with something more than the soundtrack cd? Maybe it's a bit much to want an art book with a DS game.

They gave us a pretty detailed artbook for Knight in the Nightmare. And that's good, because the game is gorgeous. <3

Yay, another production diary! (Link at bottom of post)

Will there be a guide for this?

If there is one it certainly won't be from DoubleJump. According to their forum Atlus wouldn't let them get a licence to do one for Persona PSP. Take this with a grain of salt though. Maybe DJ did try to screw them up... Who knows.

Can't wait for this, Devil Survivor is one of my favorite DS games and I beat it countless times (Could never beat
Lucifer
though :().

Hope DS2 comes to the DS.

Nice review.

I really hope my play-asia pre order comes with the soundtrack even though their product description does not mention it.

Does you have to create your own maps ala Etrian Odyssey or does it fill in automatically?

edit: derp it helps if I read the review. Thank goodness. That was my least favorite part of EO. :x

Why do some of you guys hate playing as teens so much? Were you guys bullied in your youth, or something? :lol

But most rpgs have you play as teens...maybe they want something different. And Persona takes it all the way on the teen thing.

I was never into the SMT series except for Persona, but this one caught my interest.

It looks like Etrian Odyssey but much more compelling with a cool premise.

I'm getting it for sure, this and Infinite Space.

Devil Survivor was amazingly good and has put Strange Journey on my radar, after my dabblings with Digital Devil Saga 1 and SMT1/2 left me unimpressed. However, I've read/watched a bit about other SMT-related games, and there are a few things that concern me. Should I have any reservations about the following for Strange Journey?

* the negotiation system to recruit demons is arbitrary and you basically need a FAQ or lots of patience
* save points are far apart
* demon fusion is a hassle (Devil Survivor fixed this, but I'm not sure if SJ is going backwards here)
* the random encounter rate is too high (Devil Survivor also fixed this by being an SRPG with pre-designed battles)

I'm all for something different any time it's there, but some of the posters in the thread seem to have a vendetta against teens in RPGs.

I was originally planning on getting this day one, but with God of War 3, End of Eternity, and Final Fantasy XIII I just don't see having the time for it... ;_;

I actually strongly disliked Devil Survivor, but here's my take:

- I've never found the negotiation system to be completely arbitrary. In earlier games, it was hard to get a sense for how to recruit them because the translation was spotty. Nocturne is a great example of a game with solid recruitment. I never used an FAQ for any of it, and instead went with conversation topics that made sense for the emotional make up of that demon.

- I've heard Strange Journey is more generous about how you save your game, but I haven't played the JP version, so I can't be sure.

- I've personally never found demon fusion a hassle. In fact, it's usually my favorite part of SMT games. i only find it to be a hassle when I don't have the demons I need, or I'm running out of spots and have to start fusing to make space. I found Devil Survivor's bidding system a bigger hassle than merely getting my own demons.

- high RE rate is a hallmark of SMT, which has always prided itself on being a "hardcore" JRPG. I don't know how high the RE rate is in SJ, specifically, though.

So essentially, I didn't answer any of your questions. :\

Because we're all "mature" gamers now, and the only way to show this is by playing as "mature" characters that "we can relate to", like an over-roided space marine or a Lord of the Rings reject.

Let's not forget the angry cop with a dead family.

End of Eternity nonwithstanding, I'm still trying to juggle getting this game or Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver. On one end, I love SMT unconditionally (for the most part). On the other, Gold and Silver were my favorite Pokemon titles. Third, I absolutely could not get into the Etrian Odyssey games, which may or may not be an issue if Strange Journey is more like SMT1/2/If rather than Etrian Odyssey with SMT clothing (if that makes a lick of sense).

Your list of complaints is, for the most part, pretty similar to my complaints about numerous entries in the series.

- Don't know specifics about save spot placement, but there is no save anywhere function like there was in DS.

- You don't select what skills to inherit as you did in DS or Raidou 2, but by my understanding the selection of skills a demon will inherit in SJ isn't random like it is in previous SMT; it is completely determined by what the parents and their skills are, and whether or not you add a D-Source during the fusion the process.

-In all SMT games, there are abilities that let you increase/decrease the encounter rate at will, and the more recent games (also the EO series) use an on-screen indicator that goes from green~yellow~red as you get closer to a random encounter (obviously the mechanics are more complicated and depend on your definition of "random"). SJ seems to retain this system, with modules you install in your main character's armor to change the encounter rate)
