Shin'en announced FAST Racing Neo

The Wii U needs its own devs who can shut people up. In this case it's pretty much either Shin'en or Retro, so I'm holding them to high standards.

Especially an F-Zero-type game with Shin'en-graphics could make a lot of gamers take a second look at the Wii U. Wipeout is sadly virtually dead and I don't think MS has any futuristic racer in the works, so it could be a +1 for the Wii U.

I hope the gameplay is there. I can't wait for the reveal. I really hope this is a hit for Shin'en, they deserve it.

Honestly looking at Tropical Smoothie, Retro is WAY below Shin'en's league, hell Nano Assault Neo is better looking honestly, and that was a launch title with hardly optimized code.

I feel since Armature happened, they lost their best coders, one of the Armature folks was the lead engineer IIRC.

And even artistically and tech for the console, Jungle Beat blew DKCR out of the water.

TF is just so bland looking with little to no lighting and shadowing. :(

That image being "directly from the game" could mean any of the following:

- You could see that level of detail at the 'car' selection screen and other menus.
- You could see that level of detail in a 'showroom'.
- "..."..." in close-ups at the start of the race.
- "..."..." in replays of the race at certain instances.

I'm not arguing whether I'd not Shin'en can pull that off(they're crazy like that), but from a practical standpoint - gameplay viewing angles - you won't see that kind of detail(like the paint job). However, if at any point during gameplay, the camera gets close enough to a model where you can see that kind of detail... then gosh damn! :O

I can't believe that's in-game, I mean look at how smooth the model is and crisp the textures are.. IN 60 FRAMES!!! O_o

Hope the environments hold up!

They only really said that that was the model of the car from the game, not that that was taken from an in game screenshot running realtime.

Monolith.

X does look amazing so far, but we've seen little of it, so we don't know yet exactly how much freedom you're gonna have in the game or how much stuff is going to happen in those gorgeous environments. I don't think Monolith have a track record of making gorgeous games like Retro and Shin'en yet. I could be wrong, we'll see how great X turns out. It's true that I also have high expectations for that game's graphics.

Monolith Soft may indeed be the ones to watch. Long before "X" was revealed, they went on record stating that they want to show everyone that Japanese devs can still compete - in terms of game engine tech - with the West. As good as "X" currently looks, we've been seeing the game in a rather rough state. On top of that, we have yet to see high quality uncompressed footage.

To put things in perspective: Remember how 'unimpressive' Bayonetta 2 looked during the E3 2013 reveal video? Then impressions changed drastically once footage from the showfloor began rolling in. It was like a night & day difference! Then quite a few jaws hit the floor after the 60fps hi HQ footage came. "X" haven't gotten any of that treatment yet, and it's already looking great in its rough state. I can't imagine how stunning that game will finally look!

That said, it may not be fair to directly compare their game to Shinen's, giving the vast disparity in budgets(and artists). I'd agree that Shin'en has more skilled programmers, based on results. However what Monolith Soft pulled off (on Wii) with Xenoblade - massive open worlds with no loading- is nothing to scoff at.

I'll try to pull up that quote later(on mobile now), but Monolith seems quite intent on surprising people with their tech.

I have no doubt in my mind about monolithsoft, especially with that they did with the wii

Damn, I want to see more from this game. Right now.

Also: Something tells me that this game won't be that futuristic. Looking at the reflection from the car it looks like there is a normal building and tree. So maybe the game will feature futuristic hovering cars in more or less normal environments?

Another confirmation that the car model is from ingame, and the reason is quite simple:

"Well, we are simply too small to build HQ assets just for promos :). So we built HQ assets for our game, and use those as promos... Like a boss!"

Lol, that's kinda how that quote played out in my head. ;p

What about the art of the original? I can't find it as the website's how completely for Neo, but didn't it use higher-quality models for the cars in it?

Edit:

Maybe it's just better because of the lighting and it's clean.

try asking them on twitter

So Shin'en have more of a tease for you FAST Racing NEOgaf:

I asked how it felt to not have the limits that WiiWare did, they said:

Since FRN we use 4-8k textures. Means hyper real graphics but 16x storage. Happy this is no prob on WiiU eShop :)

Why must you make us wait Shin'en?

Yes Shinen, pls don´t make us wait for too long.

Hmm, they could do wonders with limited space on WiiWare, which means we're in for a treat on Wii U, without such space restrictions. Oh boy.

From an interview with Pretendo:
Q: When can we expect to see the first footage or information on Fast Racing Neo? Is there any tid-bits of info you could give us right now?

In 2014. We currently optimize the local multiplayer part and it seems as we can go far beyond what we have done previously.
:(

The model may be straight from the game, but i very much doubt this is a real-time rendered image. The honey grid pattern is clearly photoshopped on in post production. It doesn't follow the curves of the model. So, if that's photoshopped, i'm pretty sure this was not an in-engine render, even though the model (mesh) and base textures may be. Look at the reflections, they seem to be from a photograph. The image is doctored, but that doesn't mean they didn't start from in-game assets. But then again, who's to say they didn't apply a fast subdevision modifier to the mesh as well?

I'm hoping in-game comes close to this but this image clearly doesn't come out of the game "as is". I'm a bit pumped, also because i like the design of the vehicle (clearly futuristic, yet still very much "a car"). But i'm not getting carried away just yet. I want to see more.

So what happened with Shin'en not announcing games until they have something to show?

Nintendo probably have something to do with it. shin'nen and wayforward are their star eshop/indie people that they always promote probably the most. So they save them for nintendo directs.

I've a feeling that you can add Slightly Mad Studios to that list next year too. They canned the PS3 and 360 SKUs because last gen hardware couldn't produce good enough eye candy for Project CARS and we know from logs that the game uses DX11-equivalent features using GX2.

I think some people are going to be surprised at what the little box is going to be capable of during these next few years. I can't wait!!!

Tbh I dunno what to expect from this game. Sure these guys are technical wizards, but vehicle and course design are a big part of what make a racing game look good. I hope they have a great artist this time, Wipeout HD and F-Zero GX set the bar high.

Sorry for the bump but some relevant info and news regarding their other game via Nintendo Enthusiast http://nintendoenthusiast.com/news/new-wii-u-game-shinen-reveal-coming-soon/

Not that it needed confirming but,
On FAST Racing Neo:
"I can't post too many information at the moment, but I can confirm, that this will not be a simple port or remake of the Wii version. It will be a standalone, full new product and we try it to create the most exciting eShop game in 2014.

On other game, reveal in a few weeks.
Plus there is another Wii U game I'm currently working on. It should get revealed in the next weeks, but that's all I'm allowed to write."

Perfect controls are very important to us. We support the Wii U Pro Controller, the Wii Wheel, the Wii Remote/Nunchuk and of course the Wii U GamePad.

NN: Leaderboards. Everyone loves them! I can see the headlines now. “FAST Racing Neo Shifts Into High Gear With Online Leaderboards!” Being able to compete with friends and other folks around the world via leaderboards is just undeniably fun. It also drastically enhances replay value for games. Will FAST Racing Neo feature leaderboards? If so, how will they be incorporated into the gameplay?

SM: FRN will support a wide array of online options. We see them as an important part of the game. We will reveal more on them in the near future.

NN: In mid-December, Shin’en mentioned that another title in addition to FAST Racing Neo. Can you give us any information about that project?

SM: We will reveal first information very soon. It’s a very beautiful game and fits perfectly on Wii U.
