Here's a quick impression on Shining Force EXA; also my pre-order came with an episode 0 short novel that was less then 200-pages long, without reading it you kinda miss out on how the characters met; its not important for the game, but I would have preferred story telling that could have avoided the short novel all together.
Famitsu Cross Review gave it a 9,9,8,9 which was shown on another thread, so I had somewhat high hopes for this game. The game itself is a classic hack-and-slash ARPG, the game revolves around two characters Toma who uses a sword and Cyril who uses a magic book/bowgun. This game is centered around the "Geo Fort" which is your home-base, you can go out to new areas and fight new enemies, and return to the Geo Fort for upgrades etc. Also, the Geo Fort can be attacked while you are in the dungeon, in which case you will control your other party member that you are not using and protect the base.
The you can upgrade the Geo Fort with canons that can attack enemies from afar. There are also cool Geo Fort upgrades like "Training Facility" and most interesting a "Robot Factory" which allows you to make custom robots that can do everything from help you in battle to maintain the Geo Fort. There are other features like radars, barries, repair systems, etc that are part of the Geo Fort.
The game itself seems to have been designed for the average gamer so most battles aren't very difficult and there are an ass load of save points. Also, the game takes several hours before it gets remotely interesting, since you will need to obtain and get all the features of the Geo Fort.
Positives:
- the game is full voice and the cut scenes are very well done.
- fantastic character designs and strong attempts in character development
- minimal load time.
- the character actually changes their appearance based on the what you have equipped on them. For this reason its a lot more enjoyable to get cool equipment
- there is actually a story, but I wouldn't call it particularly fantastic.
Negatives:
- battles are very easy and many times aren't even a challenge. Button mashing will get you far
- graphics aren't anything to write home about.
- picking up items isn't automatic, you have to press a button
- the dungeon maps itself are linear and uncreative
- control for Cyril's bowgun is very poor, its hard to aim and the animation is terrible; her melee attacks themselves are more frustrating then challenging.
