Shinobi 3DS officially announced; direct-feed screens, gameplay trailer

I agree with Sanshiro's remarks on twitter. The game looks like fun, and seems to have decent combat mechanics, not unlike Spiderman WoS before it. Too bad GAF is putting it on so much blast.

Doesn't Sega have the license to a couple of Marvel characters now, actually? (Not that it'd actually happen considering all the legal stuff to come out of RoS's bosses...)

Why bother? They should have just left it a DS game (I really hope that's what happened here). It's not like 3DS couldn't play it and it would look like less of a shitty effort and of course sell more copies to the ~150 million DS owners. Everybody wins.

Realistically I think they did this shit just to charge $40 like we're that stupid and desperate for 3DS games.

Judging by other scans, Sonic Generations 3DS also looks like this.
Dammit. I should've just read the OP and left. Now I am disappointed twice.

Its not just the graphics, the game just looks uninspired. Like they had no reason to make this for 3DS but they did anyway.

Very Cave Story-esque

I think they just have the license to make games based of Marvel movies nothing more.

What a disappointing reveal trailer. Looks nothing (gameplay wise or less importantly visually) like the last Shinobi outing. At best it looks like an average PSN/XBLA title, at worst it looks like an iPhone game. Put this next to Mirror's Edge on iPhone and there's not much of a difference (quality wise).

I hope it turns out a lot better than this first impression.

LTTP but the graphics kind of look like ass in this game, it's probably fun to play though. Perhaps the developers are still tweaking the visuals ?

Congratulations, devs... you are now the creators of the 3DS game with the worst graphics so far (literally)...

That sure will look nice in your resumé...

Not to be a defender or anything, but that doesn't look anything like the Mirror's Edge that I play on iPhone. This is what most of Mirror's Edge looks like:

Sad how graphics obsessed gamers have become, another reason which proves aren't art

If the game was a $10 - $20 downloadable title I wouldn't care, but I think it is absurd to ask for me to part with $40 for this halfbaked effort.

I concur, the game could have amazing mechanics but there is noway this is going to be worth $40, not imo anyway, I guess this is why Nintendo was/is worried about the effect of $1 ios games has on the value of retail games, personally I think it's a good thing, it forces publishers and developers to set higher targets and production value.

Honest question: Is there anyone here who looks at that game and wants to spend $40 on it?

To me the quality of the game doesn't justify the high price that is going to be asked for it. I've had the same reaction to alot of the 3ds games released or shown thus far. The games simply do not have enough content or production value to warrant spending $40 for them. :(

Honest answer: Nope, but then there are not really that many games that are worth the full day one asking price across any of the platforms.

Yeah, I know how this place can be with hyperbole but I am not getting this "I'm insulted by the way it looks" vibe at all.

If it plays well, day 1.

I like the style though it's a tad too minimalistic.

Usually a game's debut has some redeeming quality to it. Where you can look at it and tell what areas they've been focusing on and what still needs touched up.

But this....?

Geometry is low; texture work is almost non-existent; no lighting to speak of; the particle effects are very low quality. The stages are basic and limited in scope, rely heavily on cut&paste objects and 2d assets. Topped off with over-sized circle shadows, actual clipping between background objects and only 4 months to release.

Good job, Sega!

Steel Diver too suffers from 'DS up-port syndrome', but it doesn't look all that bad in motion. It has some pretty nifty lighting effects and, at certain points, uses bump mapping to add extra detail. There's one part of the game where you see an underwater volcano explode, and the effect of light on the smoke looks really great.

Nintendo brought this upon themselves.

With better hardware capabilities comes better expectations.

The PS1 was 3D?????

Obviously, I mean the effect of the 3DS, not polygons.

I guess not obviously enough.

Guess I skimmed a little too briskly.

But... the game is ugly no matter how many dimensions you throw at it.

Of course that's your opinion but seems someone that has played it think it looks really nice.

Seems closeminded to me that people are writing it off without even seeing it 100% but to each their own.

I bought Super Meat Boy for my brother for 20$ and it wasn't for it's technical graphics.

If the game plays oldschool 2D, I am there.

But at least SMB has an "artstyle." Shinobi looks to be a bit bland in that department.

That might not be a coincidence.

The style might suit 3D really well.

I hope we get demos or trailers in 3D when E3 hits.
Or it could be this is what lowest common denominator 3DS games look like when devs don't yet know how to develop using the 3DS hardware to its highest potential.

Just watched the trailer again. The 3D on this one will be terrible, mark my words. Saw a lot of instances were the object would come forward and then disappear as they clipped the camera. Clearly Griptonite doesn't know a damn thing about what does and doesn't work in 3D.

Am I the only one who read the previews that said the game looks to be actually good?

Yeah, I'm not sure it will be but those that have played it seem to be saying good things.

I'm just glad oldschool 2D games still exist on platforms I game on.

I am sure there will be games from better teams that put this to shame graphically but I don't see how it can fail unless it's really short and plays poorly.

And with that would come an even lesser battery life and a high cost and people would then whine that the system is way too expansive. The graphics for the 3DS are fine, this game just isn't using all what the 3DS is capable of.

As long as its a fun game I'll be fine, graphics come a distant 4th behind Gameplay, music and story when it comes to my enjoyment of games. I've enjoyed all the games I've played form the developer so I'm def going to be keeping my eye on this.

Lol? 3DS has shit battery life. Even when in sleep mode it drains. PSP was better even.

Or just have High Voltage sort the tech for it. They seem hell bent on developing insane rendering techniques, but since Hunter: The Reckoning they've been a bit butterfingery with the game part.
