An unfair comparison on the 2D side. while Ninja Gaiden on the NES had a great soundtrack and the cutscenes were awesome the Shinobi games were Sega at its best;
I mean, you get to ride a surf board and kill ninjas and mechs from all angles while listening to a Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack on Shinobi 3, how can you beat that?

The Revenge of Shinobi is the best ninja game ever made.
That fucker got my saves corrupted twice though.

OP, you needed to point out that arcade Ninja Gaiden and NES Ninja Gaiden are two completely different games.
For me arcade Shinobi, 1987, is a classic game. One of my favourite early arcades of all time. Stunning game.
But for the more modern series its Ninja Gaiden series. And Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3 Razors Edge are good games. Terrible storyline in them though.

I worked on i-Ninja. Developed by Argonaut Games for Namco. It was an okay game.

This is tough for me. To me, they have become one series, as the 3D Ninja Gaiden games have filled my need for a great 3D Shinobi game.
Excluding remakes, I've enjoyed more Shinobi titles, but Ninja Gaiden Black is my favorite game of all time, so.... My heart is saying Ninja Gaiden. It's the one game I can't live without, even though the two series are inseparable for me.

Shinobi was better during the 2D side-scrolling era. Shinobi III, especially, has aged like fine wine and is worth a playthrough this moment. Like, right now.
Ninja Gaiden Black and II have no real competition from the Shinobi camp. I'd like Sega to get on that, and Platinum are always there to help.

Ninja Gaiden and it's not even close. Both the 2D and the 3D series.
Shinobi 2D series is good, but it's too slow for my tastes. Ninja Gaiden 2D series is fast, difficult and fun as shit.
Shinobi 3D series is fucking awful. Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, and Razor's Edge are fucking amazing and I'd rather play even vanilla Ninja Gaiden 3 over the 3D Shinobi games.

I've only played the major 2D games, and I think I like the NES Ninja Gaidens are the best. I don't care for the "cutscenes" but the games are great, they are like fast ninja Castlevania games. Definitely agree that the early 2D Shinobis are a bit slow. And Shinobi 3 is too easy B^)

They aren't directly comparable as the 3D games aren't the same kind of game.(NGB is arena combat, Shinobi PS2 is a 3D platformer)
but the game design in Shinobi PS2 is rock solid. Like Shinobi does what people praise MMX stage one and Mario stage 1-1 for doing, but it does it throughout the whole game.
all without the iteration NG got for NGB
Ninja Gaiden Black is the perfect definition. Best single player game ever made.

You can't really compare Shinobi to anything. Game came up with its own approach to combat and its own rules. It's not really based on anything other than being a platformer.
That's why it's just so impressive to me that they were able to teach players its rules through play so well on its first try. Criminally underrated game.

It's one of the best for sure, just look at this shit, graphically it still looks great compared to any of the action games out today and this was a rock solid 60fps.
