Quick and dirty... forgive me, it's 4:49 in the morning...

Love you, GABEN!

replies show that nobody has read the article because nobody has mentioned "wearable computers" and Valve's hardware labs.

good stuff

I’m very fascinated that you’re interested in wearable computers, especially in these days where our smart phones are basically handheld, touch screen systems. What about a more modular, full-featured approach that we used to see with these prototypes – where does that excite you, where do you see that going in the realm of games or other applications?

Well it’s exciting when you, you know, some of the prototypes that I’ve seen are basically the equivalent of a hundred inch display with considerably lower power requirements than a typical smartphone display, so if you just look at it straight up as a presentation technology that’s pretty interesting. It seems like some of the hard engineering problems are getting solved and a hundred inch display is way better than a ten inch display. The other thing that’s interesting is that a lot of these systems tend to allow you to overlap on a per-pixel basis the sort of real world with the virtual world. That’s sort of a more speculative class of applications, it requires obviously a lot of computation to try to figure out how to integrate pixels from the real world with pixels from the virtual world. So is that a for sure that that’ll end up resulting in a lot of interesting augmented reality games? I think that that’s pretty speculative, but if somebody here said “I’ve got a – I want to try something,” I don’t think there’s anybody here that would say “oh well there’s nothing, that’s a waste of time.” As opposed to the – it’s a hundred inch iPad where it’s pretty easy to see that that’s awfully nice, especially if it takes – it has battery power characteristics than more traditional kinds of displays.

That reminds me, I really need to get Raising the Bar.

It is very difficult/expensive to find now. Like 2 or 3 years ago I spent like $60 on a partially damaged used copy.

Looks like there's a used copy on eBay for $80+ right now.

Man, he really looks like a hobo.

Seriously, you could see a guy like that on the streets and he'd fit the mold. Scary.

I worked at Gamestop when it came out and I waited for it to get pennied out when they decided they weren't going to sell it like they do with game guides and got it for free. :)

:lol at the Santa Clause pic.

pretty fast too - what'd he do that was bannable here? i didn't think asking if something was thread-worthy fell on that list.

Personally, I do get a little annoyed when people complain about the existence of threads (as if every one of the 40 threads on a page needs to be up to their standards of strictly news and no fun) but I've never seen anyone banned for it. It did seem like his post was a little more anger filled than others', maybe he crossed a line?

You know, if something horribly tragic happens and Valve begins to go downhill from today, the blame will all go on the beard. There will be rallies calling for its removal.

If the opposite happens, and Valve manage to transcend beyond their already-considerable strengths, then the beard will be hailed and other developers will be called to produce their own.

Complaining about the existence of threads is a bannable offense.

Just read through the article, (it was great and very insightful as always when you're doing interviews with Gaben.) But after reading the last part, got me thinking......

Half Life 3 on iPad confirmed!

:p

Edit:
Gaben needs to write a book or something. Can't get enough of this dude's philosophy and business practices.

Beard actually looks pretty good on him. Its a shame facial hair has become such a negative thing in professional atmospheres.

yeah, why is that? so ridiculous, and seems completely arbitrary.. why would facial hair be negative in any way? just because some people "feel" like it's offensive or something? lol.

i haven't shaved my beard in almost 8 years and maybe won't for another 8. if someone doesn't want to hire me because of it or whatever, then fuck them, wouldn't want to deal with such petty people anyway.

so, good going Gabe.
hire me?

*sigh* beard comments are just further delaying EP3 guys.....
He's testing us.
And we're losing big time.

EP3 CONFIRMED!

Badass, wouldn't be surprised if he'd pull a Peter Jackson next.

Maybe it has something to do with Notch and Tim Schafer :O?

He looks like the wise dude old dude in a zombie movie. Actually, Gabe always has this slightly bewildered expression to him I find amusing.

That reminds me, I really need to get Raising the Bar. Or was there another book ever made about Valve's internal design processes?

Nope, and Raising the Bar is EOL, which is why it's ridiculously expensive even used - Valve need to have it republished and sold on occasion via their store. As mentioned, the closest available alternative is The Final Hours of Portal 2 (Steam/iOS).

On that note, I can't wait for The Final Hours of Half-Life 3. I'm especially interested in its transmutation from Episode Three to a fully-fledged sequel.

That Gabe troll-face image looks a lot like Peter Griffin.

Commenting about the "worthiness" of a thread is frowned upon because it isn't conducive to discussion. Such a thing is up to the mods to decide.

Really?
Shit I have a copy. I should take better care of it. Right now it's covered in dust on my bookshelf and the paper cover is a bit bent. But I really don't have any plans to sell it.
I bought it for MUH LUV UH DA GAME.

Take care of it and it'll grow into a retirement nest egg. :p

Yeah, right. Like any other developer could grow a beard to match glorious Gaben's flowing power whiskers.

He does look like a dude that would take you aside to a quiet place and give you an earful of the truth about 9/11 and the moon landings though.

I'm in tears, amazing.
