Shocking News! Wii U can run downloadable games at 1080P without breaking a sweat

I won't be surprised to see PS480 games being 1080p, tech wise, there's really no reason they couldn't be.

They'd make them look sexier at 720p rather than optimise them for 1080. It wouldn't surprise me if 720 TV's are even more common as that's what we got for the first few years of HDTV until 1080 became the norm. Mine's only 720.

Much like this generation and say, sixty frames per second, I would imagine that most developers will probably opt to just go for fancier new graphical gimmicks than pushing for a specific resolution and/or frame rate.

There are almost no native 720p TVs.

But while it's true you can do more with 720p, it costs more to do that. Publishers are constantly bitching about game budgets as it is, if they want to squeeze every possible CPU cycle they can to make the prettiest 720p, barely 30fps PS480 game they can, it's going to cost obscene amounts.

Its Toki Tori, why the hell wouldn´t it 1080p

Don´t know why this thread was needed in the first place...

Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, and Gran Turismo 5 are 1080p native.
Interesting choices. Only one is 1080p consistently (and only if you turn off AA), and that was after a patch way after launch.

Super Stardust HD = 1280x1080 (no AA) pre-update, 1920x1080 (no AA) or 1280x720 (4xAA) post-update
Wipeout HD - dynamic framebuffer, 1280x1080 to 1920x1080 depending on load
Gran Tourismo 5 - 1280x720 (4xAA), 1280x1080 (QAA, TAA selectable), 1280x720 (QAA) in 3D mode

Still doesnt change the fact that the majority of games this gen are sub par HD resolutions.

At the start of the generation you could have said that. By year 3 that was complete bunk. In year six? Maybe 30% of released games even hover around it.

The reason that this stance has survived so long is that some of the generations biggest games have been "sub-HD".

You're being picky considering the OP only mentioned running games at 1080p smoothly.

This is the post I quoted ...

"Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, and Gran Turismo 5 are 1080p native."

If you want to argue that 1080p doesn't inherently specify horizontal resolution, sure I'll bite. But obviously most people are assuming 1920 when it is stated.

This. Nintendo said since the beginning that the Wii U could output 1080p. Toki Tori 2 is the least I could expect of a game running on 1080p, actually I would be worried if it couldn't run on the highest resolution.
