Shocking: Red Dead, 13+M series, is a permanent series w/ endless sequels says CEO

It's undeniably a good game, probably even a great game. Either way, it has some amazing moments that I haven't quite experienced in a game since, and a new one would finally get me to bite on a new console.

My guesses for the next Rockstar Games:

2015 - new Read Dead game (announcement this year)
2016 - Agent
2017 - Some smaller scope title like Bully or MP3
2018 - GTAVI

Red Dead is overrated imo. Its a good game but it gets too much hype.

i'm almost too excited about RDR2

has it really been 4 years since RDR? I guess I can certainly see this being how it pans out.

For the love of all that is holy and good please give us a PC version of RDR already. Played it on the PS3 and it was easily one of the best games last gen but, fuck, what I would give to play it @ 1080p with everything maxed out and looking spiffy as fuck.

I hope one of these new franchises is a spiritual successor to The Warriors video game. That was like the best 3D beat 'em up made IMO.

This is why "overrated" is such a dumb, useless term. Overrated for you, maybe, but the hype it gets it's perfectly proportional to the way I feel about it. A new Read Dead game on PC, PS4 and Xbone would reach just about max hype levels for me. I'm sure the same can be said for a lot of other people too.

They should think about releasing a port for the Personal Computer to keep people interested until the sequel hits.

You know that platform, Rockstar? The Personal Computer? Sometimes referred to as a "PC". It exists.

Not sure how far they can push the cowboy old west world but I'd bet on one of those multiple character wheel things with robberies in the next Red Dead game
YES. That's the first thing I thought when playing the heists in GTAV: That mechanic would be absolutely perfect in RDR, a series about wild west outlaws. Imagine committing a train robbery with that system. My mouth waters.

Well the difference with GTA is that they have a lot of potential time periods and settings they can use. With RDR, they basically have one time period and one setting to work with. And the limited technology and sparse, predictable landscape don't really leave a whole lot of room for fun new things to do. They exhausted most possibilities in RDR already.
They have a lot of potential time periods with GTA, but they only explored that once (London '69) and don't seem at all interested in revisiting the concept. All other installments use "present day", which thus far has been a far smaller stretch of time than the Wild West era.

I'll grant you the city locales bring more of a defined personality than RDR overall, but that's more a product of RDR's towns being a series of compressed caricatures trying to distill the whole of the west down to one centralized locale per archetype. You had the eastern city with its modern sophistications, the seedy port town, the farm homestead, the dusty town in the middle of nowhere comprised of only Main Street, the gold mine, a couple of Mexican pueblos... If they picked one or two of these and extrapolated from there, rather than rifling through a grab-bag of loose pastiches, they could have a more defined regional flavor. Off the top of my head, setting a big chunk of the game in a New Orleans analogue and going whole hog with a busy port full of opulent riverboats and a denser, more established city would give it more identity than the "vaguely New Orleans-ish swampland settlement" RDR evoked with Thieves Landing.

Which brings us to the main thing that can be improved from RDR, making all the locales feel like they matter. There were a few offshoot settlements aside from the ones mentioned above, but almost absolutely nothing of value happened in them, they were little more than window dressing. In a setting where signs of civilization are sparse, any occurrence of "Hey, there's people here!" should be accompanied by a lot of "Hey, these people will give me a bunch of things to do!"

RDR's other big Achilles heel that could easily be covered: The main missions all went in a straight line around the map. You finished the stuff at McFarlane's Ranch, you went on to Armadillo. You finished the stuff at Armadillo, you went on to Mexico. You clean up Mexico, you go back to Blackwater. I mean, remember when you first got to Armadillo, and there was that cool sheriff? Remember Landon Ricketts? You do two or three missions for these guys, all in a straight line, and then the game throws them out the window; You never revisit 'em, you'll never be prompted to come back later and get something else to do with them. Just go find the next guy in succession now and do all his stuff. Such a waste. It kind of defeats the purpose of an open world game for all the significant beats to happen on such a plotted course that funnels you from one "active" story location and quest-giver to the next. There desperately needed to be more urging to roam, to revisit the old because there was still significant things to do there.

consumers want "better" not "more" is how it should be

call of duty proves that its not accurate as far as if you just want a cash grab. But as far as quality goes RDR is on the money

I have this on the PS3 and it one of my fav games of all time - I've been thinking about replaying it, but I'm wondering if I should start over on the 360 version (it's dirt cheap used).

What say ye GAF? Start over with the PS3 version or go 360?

As for the OP - gimme more RDR!!! Man I love that western setting so much....Marston was a really well developed character and the flow of the game....goddamn.

Bring it on R*!

Without a doubt my absolute favorite open world game of the previous gen was red dead redemption. Me and my friends wasted so much time playing online together. Can't wait for them to make another one! Hopefully it's current gen only too!

As a person who doesnt really love GTA but really really really loved RDR, I am extremely glad to hear this.

I'd be pumped to hear an announcement for RED DEAD "whatever".

I wonder if they are going to alternate Red Dead and GTA as their 2 big flagship titles from here on out. As much as I enjoyed RDR I feel that some parts of the game could have been more fleshed out. Now they have nailed down the formula hopefully they can improve the game significantly much like GTA4 to GTA5.

I wouldn't mind a new game from each series alternating every 3 years or so gives them plenty of time to develop each one without feeling rushed and too recycled.

I feel sequels to RDR will end up disappointing many. You just cant recapture that 'newness' that RDR had and I'm not sure they really left a ton of room for new stuff to do in this sort of environment. Its gonna have to rehash much of what RDR already did.

I hate to say you're right.. but dammit.. you're right.

RDR had so much going already in it.. that honestly it's really hard to think what more they could add that bring much "new" to the table.

Which considering that by the time I beat RDR.. I was totally 100% done with it. I tried to replay it last year.. but just wasn't feeling it.

It was probably my favorite game from last gen as well outside of Dark Souls, Skyrim and Fallout 3/NV.

I got so burnt out on hunting in RDR that doing it in Far Cry 3 was painful. I probably spent well over 100hrs plus on RDR as well. A lot of it just roaming and exploring and hunting.

Fancy graphics won't be enough for me personally... tighter gunplay? It'd be nice.. but it's far from the reason I loved the game to begin with.

I want a new RDR.. but I'm not sure I really would want to play it.

In another 2 or 3 years though.. it'll be long enough that that a whole slew of new gamers will have a chance to play it that never experienced RDR to begin with.

I'd like a game somewhat same time period as RDR just with some bigger cities like Blackwater.

Can't be too lawless with more modern stuff so wouldn't be mad if they go older.

My memory isn't what it used to be, how long was Red Dead Redemption in limbo before it actually came out? I remember it took ages, but it was well worth it.

I'm so love/hate with Rockstar games... whatever they do with this franchise, I hope it has good gameplay this time. They're like the last remaining studio that makes games that feel like HD versions of PS1 third person shooters.

I loved everything else about RDR except that.

I understand not being fans of their games gameplay but to say it's bad is just an opinion. They made those games exactly how they wanted to and their style is definitely heavy on realism based physics models. I'm not claiming the games are necessarily "realistic" just that they capture a much greater feel of realism than most other games do in regards to character and object movement/interaction.

Some people aren't big fans of it and would rather have more precise and responsive control but for what they're trying to accomplish I feel that they hit the nail pretty square on the head given the level of technology we're currently at. I personally enjoy the shit out of these games precisely for what they achieve in this regard and it's not as though you can't look elsewhere for different gameplay styles.

To say the gameplay is bad though I feel is doing them a disservice, as opposed to saying that you don't enjoy it for specific reasons. There's a big difference between something not appealing to you personally and it actually being bad.

Let's just be thankful, I mean REALLY THANKFUL that neither Activision or Ubisoft hold publishing rights to Red Dead. I know a lot of people love Assassin's Creed and CoD but we all also know that these companies are not taking the best care or putting their best into each release due to the frequent release schedule each one has.

I'm just glad that Red Dead won't be treated this way.
