Shooting spree in Montreal blamed on video game...

Have you even seen the game in question? Its a home made Columbine RPG. Its not under the ERSB and/or a retail game. Some asshole made it in his parents basement.

Go figure -- a few individuals are complete nut-jobs. This was one. On the radio they were reporting the contents of his blog and he noted a love for the game Postal and "wanted to die in a hail of bullets."

Blaming games is easy in these cases but it makes no sense in the broader picture.

When was the last time a kid fell into an enclosure at a zoo because he wanted to get closer to the animals? What if his favorite game was Zoo Tycoon 2. The media would call it a horrible accident, the public would blame the parents for not supervising the kid more closely, and move on to more important things. The game would not be mentioned.

If the nut-job in Montreal hadn't played violent video games, it would have been tougher to find a boogie man to blame his actions on.

Thoughts and prayers to all the victims and their families.

Something in my city, in my school is being handled by the media in exactly the same way as every other shooting.

You can't blame video games or movies for such incidents. Enviroment where he was growing up and his family should be to blame! he was just sick!
 
My uncle Charlie watched porn for 3 weeks straight and then went to a mall and tried to slam dunk his love monkey into every thing with a skirt.

On topic, games do NOT kill people. People kill people. So flippin' stupid that the media latches onto this and not the fact that the kid was infatuated with the Columbine massacre in general.

I'm not going to personally go that far and call someone's lifestyle choice complete shit. To each their own.

However, just like the U.S. is pretty much racial profiling all arabs at the airports, maybe we need the FBI and the Canadian equivalents to start trolling these goth websites and blogs and trying to sniff this kind of shit out before it happens. If people are on these sites making threats , whether empty threats or not, they need to have their names put on a watch list for local law enforcement. Tap their phones, remotely hack their computers, track their purchases... all of that stuff now takes very little effort with today's technology.

If videogames are at the forefront of this story now, it's the American media doing it.
On CTV, the anchor made mention of the game, but downplayed it pretty quickly, explaining fully that it was a downloadable flash game made by some kid on the internet.

He also took the time to explain that the goth subculture aren't all prone to violence.

It is even more chic to go against the installed opinion of your debate group (like, say, GAF), specially if the rest of the world outside that group also agrees with your opinion. False intellectual heroism FTL.

Always with the blame. Let have the media jump all over the stereotype lifestyle choices instead on focusing that this was one individual with a screw loose. Maybe his mommy didn't hug him enough or maybe there's some other lame teen angst excuse. Bottom line there is no excuse for those actions.

I don't know how this could be "socially" preventable. What are you going to do? Round up all the goths and interrogate them? Lock 'em up? There's thousands of people that have similar morbid fascinations with violence. Most of the time it's harmless and until they do something illegal there's nothing anybody can do about it. As a society you can't pull on your jackboots and start "cleaning up" lifestyles that don't share your moral beliefs.

This was the work of one messed up individual, not a lifestyle issue. You can change the gun laws, you can beef up security, but you can't start banning videogames, burning books, and forcing people to abide by a lifestyle that is deemed "acceptable" by society's majority. Hey, I think goths are idiots too, but I don't think I have the right to tell them how to live their lives. The amount of morality preaching from the media and those who consider themselves morally superior is just as disgusting as their chosen lifestyle.

the guy had psychological problems, he though polic was always after him... this being being paranoya often triggered by certain mental illnesses such as psychosis and or scitzofrenia (can`t spell) and some others

I hated people, I hated normal people who listened to mainstream music and dressed up normal and hated jocks and sports.

he`s 25!!! most kids who got big problems of isolationism and bullying are in their teens in highschool ... not at the old age of 25!!! he had brain troubles

It's actually possible that his video gameplaying saved lives. I mean, he only managed to kill 1 woman despite rampaging for quite a while apparently, without any opposition from anyone else (and he only stopped because he killed himself). He must have been completely inept with real weapons, presumably because he never spent any time using them, but playing video games instead.

Best post in the entire thread. The headline was clearly a way to attract attention...as I said the actual story mentioned it in the top line and that was it. Very tacky on their part, but that's the way it rolls.
