Shooting spree in Montreal blamed on video game...

instead of putting video games in the headline, how about putting this guy's parents in the headline? where were they? i didn't read up much about this whole thing but either the guy was insane to start with, or his parents helped put him there. either way, it was their responsibility to realize, and do something about it. and to raise him into a good person.

i mean, ffs, this is canada. you can't just waltz into walmart and buy a gun.

(i know you probably can't do that in the states either, but still)

Blaming the parents is a bit of a scapegoat at times as well. You could have the two best parents in the world raising a kid, and he or she could grow up to be the next Stalin. On the other hand you could have a kid with both parents dead from an early age, bouncing around in foster homes, getting abused by some bitch ass foster father, only to grow up and turn into the next Martin Luther King. Granted the odds are probably long in either scenario, but they can occur. Some people just grow up to be bad apples, no matter what environment you raise them in.

That said, it's beyond me how the guy could amass some of that shit without someone inside the home noticing.

His parents, WTF he was 25. I think blaming his parents is weaker then blaming video games.

It played a part, it wasn't the games fault per say, but indirectly it could have been leverage for him committing the said crime. People are ****ing sick, and sometimes can't distinguish the line between fantasy and reality.

People that are sick like that are going to do things like shoot up schools regardless of video games. If he didn't play video games he would have watched violent movies instead, and if he didn't watch movies he would have read violent books. He played the games because he was sick, not vice versa.

i guess i'm of the opinion that 25 is the new 18, the way some people act :) besides, problems like whatever this guy has, were either there from birth, or took root at a young age. he just finally snapped. personally, i think he coulda been 30+, and i'd still wonder wtf his childhood was like. not what video games he's been playing lately.

yeah, that's definitely true. but looking at his childhood would likely still provide a better view of what was going through his head than whatever else the media will focus on. which is a little odd, because i don't see what that would make for a bad article. i guess the video game angle still generates a bigger buzz.

You can't blame the parents completely, but clearly they weren't doing a good job raising their kid if he turned out that ****ed up. They had to notice his behavior and mental issues, at the least they could have gotten him help.

I have nothing to add except this question out of curiosity sake:

I thought the gunman was white? He was actually Indo-Canadian?

Are you sure, Kimveer does not sound native. Also I haven't heard a Native Canadian refer to himself as an Indian. I don't think it makes any difference either way.

The lesson - start judging books by their cover. How do you sell a piece of shit like this a gun??

I don't find the guy the slightest bit unusual looking. That's hardly what I would call a mohawk. There are a thousand guy look just like that. From the media I read I thought this guy would look a lot worse then that. Take the gun out of his hand, chop a foot of the coat and he looks like a well dress young man.

he lived in a upper-middle class suburb in Laval north of Montreal.
maybe in the artsy plateau disrict or the red light district he would pass as normal but not in the burbs of Laval, he would be perceived as abnormal and a freak

I think that's BS. Out her in Van there are thousands of upper-middle class Indo guys look just like that. Clean cut and well dressed and there great guys, most of them were your standard black leather P coat. A large number of them are big paint ball or air soft fans. The gun is a little surprising but not enough that it would have made me think about him any more then I do about the million other Emos posting online. I think you letting media and hindsight confuse what you see.

out here in the East, it's more abnormal to obtain guns as it is in the West, Vancouver may be Canada, but it's a dfferent coutnry then Montreal big time.

2nd, he's not Indo, he's a Native

3rd, he lived in freakin' Laval. A car cultured suburb big on shopping malls, and preppy kids. This guy would stand out like sore thumb next to the materialistic young kids of Laval

If his name is Kimveer Gill than yes he of Indian descent. Doesn't matter anyway as this guy is seriously ****ed up.
