Short RPGs?

Golden Sun, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and MOTHER 3 are short RPGs that take about 20 hours to finish, even less in the case of M&L.

Ghost of a Tale just released on Steam Early Access, I'd definitely recommend everyone check that out as it's just so damn cute. The RPG elements are pretty mild, but you do have main and optional quests, dialog trees, and items/clothing to find and equip. The EA release is probably about 3 hours long so definitely pretty short at the moment, but I still have fun just running around. It's estimated it's about 25% of the full game, so that should be a decent length but also not obnoxiously long.

Crimson Shroud, short and actually pretty good rpg made by Matsuno for 3ds.

Came to recommend this one, but I have to disagree. It's not "actually pretty good," it actually pretty great. One of the best RPGs I've played in a long while. Short and yet complete. Very satisfying.

Phantasy Star IV is approximately 20 hours iirc.

And I would also recommend South Park Stick of Truth. Great oldschool RPG which is 10 hours long.

from memory, Shadowrun returns was very short. something like 10 hours.

however its also not nearly as good as SR Dragonfall or HongKong. which are also considerably longer, so eh.

Heads up re: Undertale, I put 5 hours in and didn't get anywhere near the end. I ran into a few bugs and lots of headaches with the random battles. Maybe it's easier if you know how to use items in an efficient RPG way or are good at needless bullet hell.

Chrono Trigger can be a longer game, but it's easily doable under 20 hours even on a first play through.

wait, what is this? D:
I thought I was making good headway with Chrono Trigger, and I reached the part where I now have the
time machine
but a friend told me I'm only half way through the game, so I kinda put it down and lost all my momentum.

Most Pokemon games are under 20 hours for the main story. Actually, looking it up, they seem to go longer than that for most average playthroughs. I guess 20 years of playing Pokemon means I crush the story.

Many Fire Emblem games are around 25 hours as well.

Yeah Undertale is your best bet. It takes from 5 to 9 hours to finish one playthrough and it feels very special in the sense that the story and characters are so good that you'll feel you spend 30 hours knowing them. Combat is turn based but pretty unique and the music is fantastic too. Best game I've played in years.

You can download the demo with the first section of the game from here.

Chrono Trigger is also wonderful but that's more of a 30 hour game and that's ignoring some sidequests. I think it took me around 40 doing the majority of them. Still very worth it for when you feel like spending more time with a single game.

Haven't played it in years, but sounds to me like you were near the endgame. CT can take from 20 to 50 hours depending on how you play it. Definitely go back to it sometime.

You were much farther than halfway and 20-25 hours is what I would expect a first play of CT to last anyone. If you're going over 30, you're really savoring every moment.

If you haven't, you must play Terranigma.

If you'd like to play to an original mix between SciFi 3rd person action game, RPG and wrestling there is also Hybrid Heaven which can be completed for less than 20 hours.
You need to like the unique combat system and training your MC to fully enjoy it though.

Parasite Eve is a great little 8-10 hour affair.

I played through it in 2012 (after shunning it in its day and age! - 1998) and I loved every moment of it. Very easy to play a nice full game of that length, nowadays.
Good suggestions.

Suikoden 1, Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Adventures of Mana, Super Mario RPG, and South Park are easy under 20 hours.

I think Final Fantasy 4 and Lufia 2 are as well. If not, it's close.

Lunar SSSC, Dragon Quest 5, and Nier are 20-25 hours.

Any game longer than that is usually too long.

Rhapsody on PS1 is a nice 10 hour length. The FF Crystal Chronicles on DS are around 10-15 hours as well.

Live a Live is a hidden gem for the SNES that's about 15 to 20 hours. You can play through 7 short, unrelated scenarios that each feature a different trope (kung-fu fighter, cowboy, ninja, etc).

The game does an wonderful job of mixing up the playstyle and atmosphere of each one so that it doesn't get repetitive or boring. The whole game feels modern in a way that many rpgs from that era don't. It was only released in Japan, but aeon genesis did an awesome translation for it.

Suikoden 1 is like 10-15 at best. 2 is like 15-20 or so.

No way. Suikoden 2 took me over 35 hours while I beat Suikoden 1 in about 16 hours. It was a bit disappointing how long it was in comparison. Everything felt stretched compared to Suikoden 1.

I beat Suikoden 2 first run in about 20 hours, Suikoden 1 was around 12 or so.

The games being brain-dead easy so you pretty much never die helps too.

Undertale is definitely a great example of a short one, depending on how you play it'd probably take 10-12 hours total to get to the 'true' ending.
