SHOTS FIRED!!! Microsoft starts new Xbox 360 Ban Wave!!!

600k in the US and Canada. :lol

MS ain't playing around anymore.

These ban wave patterns seem to have a lot in common with FTA ECM's. Once a big PPV event is about to air, they issue the ECM's and bring them all down. I think we'll start seeing these ban waves more often in the days before all major new titles are released.

600k?? Are you serious?

Seems like a massive pile of wasted natural resources. Nature conversation organisations need to jump on this NOW.

The girlfriend's brother woke last weak to find that he had been banned from Xbox Live. His 360 had red-ringed so he had sent it to an independent company to get it repaired, and also flashed his 360 so he could play downloaded games.

Needless to say, he wasn't a happy chappy, and I couldn't have given two hoots about it.

It's a bit annoying to see people around me modding their 360s to play for free. Some are even connected to my family and friends. I hope all of them are affected by this. Actually, one of them got their system banned during the last wave. ..So he bought a PS3 instead...As if being angry at the people you screw over make more sense.. I mean, most of his friends are on XBL., and in my opinon it would make more sense investing your money in the system and games you've been enjoying (for free).

"I'M SO PISSED OFF A COMPANY I WAS STEALING FROM ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT, HOW DARE THEY!!!!??"

yeah, kinda weird isn't it, did peoples parents fail at "consequences of your actions lecture" part in these peoples life when they were a kid?

so he only got it flashed last week? Thats means they nust be detecting FW if he hasnt played a bootleg. Dont think I am gonna bother getting my asian 360 fixed as it is modded but I have only play original copies on it.

Wanna import Bayonetta but if the machine is banned and it screws up the HD I dont wanna take the risk.

He had it flashed a few weeks ago, so he had played some copied games on it. He didn't know about flashing/piracy on the 360 before all of this, I don't think he knew he was actually doing anything wrong (duh!)

This is all fantastic news glad to see ms fucking the pirates up and sales will go up too.
We should all club together to buy that Xbox live scurity guy a years supply of his favourite drink

I'm loving how many peoples girlfriends brothers, uncles, cousins, 2nd daughter twice removed are being banned. Whole family's Xboxes are being decimated due to this ban wave but being reported by angelic family members on GAF.

Love the euphemisms.

I don't remember the last time gaming piracy was hit this hard. MS has done a great job with this.
Odds are pirates were already aware they weren't gonna be able to play online eventually, losing achievements is pretty much lol worthy and since they can still play every single game for free, I'd say pirates still have the upper hand on this one.

Not being able to get on LIVE would make the 360 experience fairly crappy IMO.

Your only options are to a) start buying legit 360 games to play online or b) buy a PS3 and legit games to play online, or c) buy a PC and continue pirating.

If these pirates could live without online gaming they never would've been discovered, and they wouldn't be rushing out to buy new consoles.

The arcades were sold out yesterday at Best Buy. I thought maybe a ton of people bought an Arcade + MW2 but now it just hit me after reading this thread that perhaps people who are banned also bought them. Whatever the case, 360 will likely have big sales numbers for November.

Man my cousin was just over at my house last month telling me about how his friend modded his Xbox and would sell him pirated games on the cheap. He went on about how he played all the way through an illegal Arkham Asylum and it counted all his achievements, etc.

I told him... "Dude, I wouldn't mess with Xbox. Microsoft can see your shit. And they'll ban your account... you'll lose your gamertag, gamer score, friends list, everything." "Nah man, it's cool," he says, "it's a really slight mod and they can't see it." "Alright... whatever man" I say.

Fast forward a few weeks and I see this thread so I email him and ask if his got hit. "Nope" he says. Hmm, I think to myself, maybe his hack really is MS-proof. I was also a little disappointed cause I was hoping MS would teach him a little lesson.

Lo and behold, on MW2 launch day morning.... he gets his Xbox banned. Justice is served. I did feel bad for him but he definitely had it coming. And the "I told you so" was oh so sweet.

Arcades all gone at Best Buy this early in the month means big things for the month.

HAHAH more BBC coverage:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_10000000/newsid_10002900/10002915.stm

the sympathetic tone of the article is amusing though
Tens of thousands of people have been cut off from playing their Xbox games online. Microsoft says they've banned certain gamers from their Xbox Live service because they may have been modifying or "chipping" their consoles to play pirated games. One Radio 1 listener Raz says he was gutted to be cut off just as he was about to play the new Call of Duty game.

...
I was pretty distraught at the time, I can't remember exactly what it said but I saw the words 'banned' and I was gutted, completely gutted.

At first I was in shock, I mean it's always at the back of your head using pirate games you know there's that possibility but you haven't heard about it, there's been no warnings and you haven't heard it happen to anyone in the last two years.

This co-worker of mine thinks his 360 mods (disc drive and fan mod) are undetectable. I keep forwarding him post in this thread along with other news articles related to the bans but he just laughs it off.

I told him there is a possibility they'll ban your account. He says, "that can't ban my account, I bought tons of games from them, that would be fucked up." I hope his ass gets banned just to prove my point. He'll even ban his account so he'll lose all his GP's. Merry Christmas motherfucker!!!

The guy was running chipped and was shocked to see his console banned, news at 11.

Seriously do these pirates not realise what they are doing? do they really expect to just get a modded console and copy games without causing any harm?

A kid my cousin goes to school with is just like this, not spoke to any of them for a week now but I do hope his 360 is finally banned, he has such an ego and in party chat he will just go on about playing ODST and MW2 weeks early and not being caught, I hope this new wave zips his pie hole shut for a while.

Someone posted about account bans in this thread earlier where stepto was chatting with the piraters and he said that account bans are not for modding, but for fraud and cheating (although there were reports on blogs that people who played pirated copies of Forza 3 early did get their accounts banned). And even then, when I have seen posts here or on blogs about people getting their accounts banned, they are still able to use their gamertag, but its permanently locked in Silver mode so they can still access their DLC.

What a prat. He had what was coming to him along with every other cheap skate son of a bitch. If you cant afford to buy games then get a better job (or in some cases just get a fucking job). I cant believe the stupid fuckers actually complaining they cut off.
It would be like someone smoking a joint in a pub and getting nikcked for it and then complaining about getting nicked.

abgx360 v1.0.2 was just released a moment ago to save people from a ban hammer.

the thing i love about this is after a while people will start talking about stealth and undetectable firmwares again only to lead to another ban wave in a few months. How can so many people be so stupid as to do something, get banned then do the exact samething again , get banned and just repeat the cycle without figuring it out.

So it can detect a DVD-ROM firmware flash?

Maybe Nintendo will ask MS how they are doing this.. Wii piracy is just as rampant.

And it bans the gamertag? or the consoles MAC address?.

Surely you could just make a new gamertag or spoof your MAC address?

Damn, I don't usually wish "harm" on anyone but this bastard deserves it. Come on MS...

Aye. The sense of entitlement that these clowns have is outrageous. Even more so considering most of these folks can probably well afford to buy the games they pirate - they just can't be arsed doing so. And then they have the chutzpah to bitch about MS banning them for the same when they finally get nabbed. Unbelievable.

I think Wii piracy is even more rampant because you can soft hack the Wii and then play games from a USB hard drive or memory stick. Micorosft's banning consoles from their online service is seen as a severe punishment by most users: no more achievements, no more online gaming, no downloadable demos, no Netflix, no online chats and messages with friends, no HD installs anymore, etc. The vast majority of 360 users use the online functionality so losing that functionality undoubtedly hurts.

The Wii on the other hand has no real online functionality. The vast majority of Wii users only play offline and only use the online functionality when the blue drive light signals a firmware update. Losing online won't do anything at all to stop Wii pirates. The only way for Nintendo to make a dent is to stop future games from running on hacked Wiis but that's going to be a very tough call since hackers can do as they please with Wii firmware updates.

jeez, and people want to shit on PC gamers and their "sense of entitlement".

The number being thrown around now is up to 1 million. :lol

It's oh-so enticing: You find a copy of a brand-new game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on a pirate site and the temptation to download it is too strong.

Well, that temptation may have cost up to 1 million users of Microsoft's Xbox Live the ability to use that service. According to a report in InformationWeek, Microsoft has banned as many as a million players from Xbox Live for altering their consoles in order to play pirated versions of games.

does this actually even help
if microsoft can detect the dvd firmware, they cant do anything

sales-age has gotta be eating this up

so if ps3/360 sales are close in the NPD, will it only be because of the banning?

Nope, the difference between the two for the month will come down mainly to $199 and Black Friday bundles plus Amazon and other promotions throughout the month, but this probably will help a bit.

I can just imagine the nightmare at Gamestops right now. They need to figure out a way to handle this I'm thinking pretty quickly as there are probably going to be a lot of horror stories soon enough.

It would have been even better if MS had added some new gamertag trophies:
