Looking on craiglist is pretty funny seeing all the people selling 360's for hundred dollars or so.

they are out another $100 by you. thats something. but some of these pirates value online play and achievements, so this is hurting some people and if a million pirates got banned from online, means they were connected online somehow, and this is hurting them. high-fives microsoft. FU pirates!Rhindle said:I don't see how this is any real disincentive for pirates. At worst, they're out $100 to trade up to a new console. They'll save more than that on the next two games they pirate.

pretty nice deal there :lol

That's a lot more than I expected. I would have thought 100,000 to be a huge number. I had no idea pirating was that rampant.
The point is that MS is NOT banning anyone from online. They're just forcing these guys to pay up for a new console, which they have every incentive to immediately go and mod. It's not going to deter anyone from piracy.Scottlarock said:they are out another $100 by you. thats something. but some of these pirates value online play and achievements, so this is hurting some people and if a million pirates got banned from online, means they were connected online somehow, and this is hurting them. high-fives microsoft. Wrong.Spasm said:Features being 'removed' is simply a byproduct of the console not being able to phone home for authorization. HDD installations are DRM controlled.
Arpharmd B said:Wait people selling these modded consoles, are they selling bricks or do the games work but just not online?
In some parts of the world (pretty much anywhere other than North America and Northern Europe), people will point and laugh at you if you buy legit games.Arpharmd B said:20 million Xbox Live-ers, right?
1 million is 5% of that.
You mean to tell me 5%
1 out of every 20 people you come across online were playing illegal burned games. Or is my math fuzzy.
If true that's mind blowing to me.

If MS was serious about this, they would be shutting down XBL accounts and wiping out achievements.
Don't pay for gold and stay offline? :lolbkfount said:MSNBC:

So 1 million banned consoles sends quite a message to pirates, while also throwing even more doubt on the whole used 360 market. Bravo MS.
They would be smarter to hang on to it. If they try to offload a banned xbox on some unsuspecting mark then they could be in some murky legal territory.Rhindle said:I don't see how this is any real disincentive for pirates. why would they shut down the only source of money they get from pirates?Arpharmd B said:This is what is shocking to me. The console is banned, but the gamercard, full of achievements to games they never bought, is fine and dandy to be left alone? Ummm. Isn't that a little ass backwards?
I mean this is the same fucking Microsoft who banned me for a week because because my profile had the word "Cunt" in it.
$$$ That's the answer. They want those banned users to buy another console.Arpharmd B said:This is what is shocking to me. The console is banned, but the gamercard, full of achievements to games they never bought, is fine and dandy to be left alone? Ummm. Isn't that a little ass backwards?

pretty much, its ridiculous down here in aus. I know a few people who pirate. And a middle aged woman I used to work with asked me to help her make an R4 work on her son's DS because I "know about games" and they are "too expensive." so she thought she had a great deal with 20 games on an SD card for $20 at the market. Fuck people.Rhindle said:In some parts of the world (pretty much anywhere other than North America and Northern Europe), people will point and laugh at you if you buy legit games.
That doesnt really make much sense to me. Wouldnt they make more money if someone actually bought the games? i understand there is a profit to be made on the 360 console now but surely it cant be that much. How many legit game purchases would it take to cover the difference? Three or four?expy said:$$$ That's the answer. They want those banned users to buy another console.
johnnysix said:I know it's maybe not a subject people want to talk about but there was widespread piracy on all the biggest systems of each generation since the Playstation. Do people really think this doesn't have an influence on system sales? This is really the first time we've ever had a real visibility of that because of the online capabilities. The DS is huge, do you think piracy plays no part in this? I'm neither advocating piracy nor criticizing these systems, I'm just saying that it seems like a major factor. It's hardly surprising.

QuadCore said:No different from when I go to the mall (Opry Mills) and there are two booths that sell that shitty console with the fake N64 controller loaded with NES and SNES games. How are they getting away with that?
The Faceless Master said:why would they shut down the only source of money they get from pirates?
by leaving the account open, they give the person an incentive to go legit.
Arpharmd B said:No but I hear what you're saying and I know what it's like dude. When you're poor you gotta make right what priorities matter first. So I don't condemn people who are not well off for pirating shit.
It's not surprising at all if you look at tracker stats from time to time.Arpharmd B said:1 out of every 20 people you come across online were playing illegal burned games. Or is my math fuzzy.

yeah, they'd have to ban the console too or people would just pay a $30-50/yr piracy tax instead of $150-200 to get a replacement console.Arpharmd B said:Yes but the margin on the console has to be small, and could still be a slight loss for all we know.
Seems like they'd make more simply banning the gamercard and not the console. +1 XBL Gold card. Plus Jim Bob pirate loses all his precious achievements and learns a valuable lesson.
Seems like the better way to handle it, no?
-edit- nope, failed logic. His console would still be modded. I made no sense whatsoever.
I wish you could delete posts here.
It would be a lot more than $30-50/year if they were banned instantly upon log-in.The Faceless Master said:yeah, they'd have to ban the console too or people would just pay a $30-50/yr piracy tax instead of $150-200 to get a replacement console.
Doesn't work like that anymore. Saves created on a banned console do not work on an unbanned console.Hesemonni said:Modded off-line console with X amount of achievements -> HDD switch to a non-modded online-console -> e-peen profit -> switch back and continue growing.

Saves don't matter as long as gamertag gets updated for friends list to look upon. And besides, nothing is played with modded machines' HDD on.saunderez said:Doesn't work like that anymore. Saves created on a banned console do not work on an unbanned console.
That's what I'm saying. It doesn't. The gamertag is flagged and appears corrupted on unbanned consoles. All saves are flagged and appear corrupted on unbanned consoles. It doesn't work the way it used to anymore. There's no way to boost gamerscore using a recently banned console.Hesemonni said:Saves don't matter as long as gamertag gets updated for friends list to look upon.
But, the thing is the modded console isn't banned cause it's never been online.saunderez said:That's what I'm saying. It doesn't. The gamertag is flagged and appears corrupted on unbanned consoles. So what games are these fictitious people playing on Live? Most of the people who were modding there consoles were playing them on Live. That's why they got banned. Once they've been banned that modded console cannot increase their gamerscore anymore. They can't just go out and buy another one and swap HDDs. They have to go legit if they want to continue playing online.Hesemonni said:But, the thing is the modded console isn't banned cause it's never been online.
it'd be a lot less, they just wouldn't log in at all.Number 2 said:It would be a lot more than $30-50/year if they were banned instantly upon log-in.
only if the ban was recent. people will just pirate and play offline, then buy mw2 and halo 3 and play them online.saunderez said:Doesn't work like that anymore. Saves created on a banned console do not work on an unbanned console.
I'm not saying people aren't playing games live with modded consoles & pirated games. I'm just wondering why people do it cause it's eventually going to kick them in the nuts anyway. Then again, I guess having two similar consoles just for the fun of playing single player on the other and multiplayer on the other might be a tad overkill (atleast from my not so HC gamer point of view).saunderez said:So what games are these fictitious people playing on Live? I wouldn't say that, or maybe you didn't mean it in that sense. I'm willing to believe that there are way more modded consoles out there that aren't online. Highly doubt that someone who won't pay for a game will pay for a monthly/yearly subscription to LIVE and a $100-150+ wireless adapter (since they probably aren't close to an Ethernet cable).saunderez said:So what games are these fictitious people playing on Live? These arent loaves of bread to feed your starving family. These are video games. Luxury items. that's what i'm thinking, shouldn't piracy be damaging more if its this widespread considering the 360's games sales?Hammer24 said:Seeing how widespread the piracy on this system is, makes the sales numbers and attach ratios even more impressive.
