cooking is just a little bit above a minimum wage job.
One of the benefits that i have seen in the hotel/restaurant industry is cooks being allowed to take a moment to eat. I always considered it fair since cooks are pretty much working on their feet thru the entire shift and it is a very highly scrutinized position.
No health care, no dental, at least get a free bean burrito. Does that seam about right?

Absolutely not.

They provide a simple service and should be treated as such.

Tips maybe.

I used to get free burgers and hot dogs when I worked at the ball park. Why not. But the question is, how much can they have? Do they have to cook it?

all employees should get a free or discounted meal. Its stupid not to.

In fact its smart busniess as if you discount the meal only it funnels money back into the resturant

No, not a whole meal.

But as they quite often taste a lot of what goes out, they usually eat a full meal that way anyway.

Oh, discounted to cost? sure. Thats hard to keep on top of in some places though.

You've clearly never held a back-of-house position in your life.

I'm heading out the door but I'll be back for a more thorough rebuttal.

No you won't. Cooking is simple, you follow a recipe. Any monkey could do it (figurative of course, not literal). They are not expressing any degree of creativity. I can cook as good as any Food Network star.

You're confusing cooks with waiters, unless they're at a place that pools tips. Where's the harm in them grabbing a little food on the go?

Like your typical office worker really earned that free donut/coffee/extra sandwich box that was just going to go to waste anyways so what's the big deal Brenda?! What were we talking about again?

What the fuck?

Anyway, I worked at a pizza place a long time ago, we made ourselves free pizzas all the time. Ingredients are super cheap and we didn't get breaks, the boss was fine with it, in fact if he was working he'd eat it with us. I can't imagine any company getting uppity over a cook making himself something during a slow period.

If you're not, you're doing it wrong...

Sure, i dont see why the fuck not. If the restaurant is going to go under then the manager should make the decision to remove free employee meals, if the restaurant is doing well, why the fuck shouldnt he get free meals if he wants them..

Basically the only reason you shouldnt give free meals is because youre doing poorly sales wise, if youre doing good, reward your employees you greedy pieces of shit.

Do you not know anything about working in a restaurant? The easiest part of the job is cooking. Anyone can cook. Working on a line isn't cooking in your fucking kitchen.

I work for an auto insurance company and I don't get free auto insurance. So... no.

you get cheaper insurance which amounts to more savings than somebody getting a free meal.

Come on. That shit is easy. Do your shit efficiently and fast. Don't be lazy, just keep focused and work.

How hard is that?

Edit: I have worked on a line before, we were an excellent team aside from one douche bag who did kind of make things difficult.

Most every cook I know gets free food. Some of them work in very upscale places too. Hell if it wasn't for that I'd probably never have tasted creme brulee.

The fact that there are some food businesses in america that do not allow their employees free meals is so heinous, it alone should be enough to classify the country as "3rd world"

The fact that not all places of business are mandated to provide food to their employees is odd enough.

America: Where labor is treated like lumber.

I'm a DM at a major restaraunt chain.

Yes, employees should get free meals within reason. They're on theit feet for 8.5 hours in constant heat at an unrelenting pace. I answer for food cost and employees eating for free does nothing to my bottom line. If food cost-overages are out the roof, it's not the employees eating for free. My managers are miscounting stock usually.

This is nothing like your example. This is like an employee at Best Buy or Sears using their discount off an already marked down item. I'm making a tad less, I have to answer to the east coast HR manager, but I'm cultivating a positive environment for my employees. They deserve It because they work hard for me.

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about

When I was a kid working at subway we got a free sandwich per shift, plus all the cookies you could eat.

I can't believe a real restaurant wouldn't let their line cooks put together some scraps to eat on breaks.

i am guessing pro_gamer666 is just trolling tonite, but just to set the record straight, out of all the departments in a hotel/restaurant, creativity is coming from the kitchen exclusively.

wow.

i don't know of, and have never worked at, a restaurant that did not give meals to its staff. i mean shit way back when i washed dishes for a living i still got a free meal. my ex's work gives everybody a meal from chef to bussy. when i worked in a bakery i got a loaf of bread every day to take home and the staff out front would always make you sandwich for lunch. it's good retention policy for one.

but i don't live in the great united states of fuck you buddy i work for my lunch.

What is up with you today??? Is this account hacked, are you trying to get banned, or what?

I don't see why not. People who work in cafes get free drinks during their breaks. I don't see why cooks wouldn't get a free meal of some sort.

Case in point, many of the Chinese restaurants in the city cook a larger meal and eat together during the slower periods of the day.

Most good places have a shared meal for the staff prior to service. Nothing fancy but its a good simple meal made and shared together. Thomas Keller speaks about these kinds of meals with quite alot of reverence.

I can't even express a fucking opinion on measly cooking without being considered a troll. Maybe I should just cock my cock and shoot myself.
