Should I buy a 3ds GAF?

I'd love to get a 3DS, but I've always struggled to get into handheld gaming, sadly.

But if you're considering it, yes. It has a fantastic library of games.

I'm planning to rebuy 3DS again, I still have PSVita but really its catalogue is too poor to satisfy gamers, disappointing. The announced 3DS titles to come look awesome. A link to the past 2, Castle of Illusion, Donkey Kong Country or those recent Castlevania, Luigi's Mansion. The whole catalogue is great I can think like 8 games I would buy.

I plan to get one eventually. Bbasically the idea is that there are enough great games that you want to play over games you have or could get on the other systems. I haven't even finished Tactics Ogre yet so i'm not in too much of a rush to get Fire Emblem and I don't know if I really want to play mario that much more than the 10 platformers I already have on the Vita but eventually I'll have beaten a lot of the better Vita games and there will be enough games I want to play on the 3ds

When I got a Wii I only really played Mario Galaxy and Excitebots (multiplayer) but I don't regret buying it.

On one hand, you can put a lot of hours in Pokemon, so you should be fine with that game.

On the other, if you only look forward to that and to BD (coming 2014), perhaps you should wait for more titles that interest you or take a better look at the 3DS library, it really is extensive and full of fun titles, so perhaps you are missing something more.

If you really don't find anything else, I'd say just buy PS+ for your Vita in the meantime, it is great value.

Love my 3DS, yes you should. Only get an XL though, not that other shit.

I'd recommend against this and trying both first. I put off buying a 3DS for so long because I don't like the XL screens compared to the original and was waiting for some sort of minor revision to the original 3DS model, but just gave up and went and bought an original 3DS model anyway.

Already have a Vita! I am not remotely interested in Nintendo games.
Nintendo traditionally makes quite a few games from quite a few genres. Define 'nintendo games' first perhaps?

This is the reason I sold mine.

... and kept my Vita. Broader library of software.

I really want to know what some of these Vita folks have been playing all this time; is such a mystery to me. I haven't turned mine on since I finished P4 other than to check that SS demo and buy Guacamelee.

I'm also considering a 3DS !

Quick question: Are DS titles compatible with the 3DS? If so, are they upscaled or something? How do they look on the 3DS?

Cheers!

Some people have broader gaming interests than Mario and teenagers on a mission.

Yep, they are compatible. They look slightly blurrier on a 3DS, but if you have a XL you can play the games in their original resolution and they will look great. You can do it on the of 3DS too, but the screens are too small.

I played LTTP on my friends SNES. I gave up after reaching the first dungeon in the castle I think.

Kingdom hearts I played on ps2. Respawning enemies made me give up the game. I think I got upto tarzan world.

Anyway, there's tons of good franchises on the 3DS, both first party and third party. If you even like video games, you're bound to find something, and there's also the huge DS library if you didn't own that system either.

I have both, but I own a PS3 as well making a lot of the choices on the Vita not interest me. Why would I want a game on the Vita when I can get a superior version the PS3 (aside from portability). It's not even about broader gaming interests at that point.
EDIT: Looking at the list below, P4 Golden and Gravity Rush are the only non-PS3 games that interest me personally. :p And I own those. VLR I also have on the 3DS for the better interface + having 999 on the same system.

I don't have a lot of time to play my handhelds, but this is my current library on the Vita:

- Wipeout
- Stardust HD
- Rayman Origins + Virtues Last Reward (3DS has them too, but Vita versions are much superior)
- Hustle Kings
- P5 Golden
- Soul Sacrifice
- Gravity Rush
- NFS Most Wanted
- MGS collection

I can't justify owning 2 handhelds, and the 3Ds bites the dust. Those games will keep me busy for months.

Meh, just what I thought; mostly ports of games that I, personally, vastly prefer to play on a big screen.

Please buy a 3DS. Too many upcoming games to pass up. It's the best handheld I've ever bought.

At least buy it for Super Mario 3D Land, the best platformer of all time.

Yup, if you own a PS3 and actively still play it, it's not worth it. If you got your PS3 ages ago and barely play games anymore and would appreciate convenience...there's no other option quite like it.

90% of those are ports

The original 3DS is probably one of the worst hardware designs ever. Why would you do that?

"Ignoring the entire point of a portable system, why would I want one?"

No, I play them for the game library. Portability is a plus. I'm not paying $40 just for port that I can take on the go, which is why I really do enjoy the Cross-Play promotions Sony does sometimes.

I bet you have double-dipped Ocarina of Time.

I bet you have double-dipped Ocarina of Time.

I did, but that's because I'm a frame rate/graphics junky and in that aspect it's the best version of the game. For MGS Collection, there's no point in me getting the portable version when the home console version is better assets wise. I'd do the same for the Vita if say, ZoE got a competent port on the Vita when the home console version is currently a crappy 30FPS.

Gamecube one. Don't remember the name. Nope never played a 3d mario! DKCR have played on SNES. Loved the series!

I have little to no info on eshop titles. But the criteria that I lose the console I lose the game does not appeal to me.
I live in Middle east so chances of getting a police report to get my games back are next to none.
Also Region lock will not help. As most of the game announcements are for japan. I know that big stuff will come through. But still.

So you played Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Wind Waker is great, but mainly for its world and story. The sailing and triforce quest at the end are daunting to some. The dungeons aren't very memorable. Twilight Princess has some of the best dungeons (and a couple of bad ones), but it has by far the slowest start in the franchise.

I recommend you check out Ocarina of Time 3D. It has very minimal story and good dungeons; gets to the action pretty fast.

I did. And that's one remake/enhanced port along with Star Fox 64 in a sea of original games. Compare that to the Vita's library, which consists, mostly, of ports.

EXACTLY. I hate when people retort with OOT and Star Fox. First of all, those are enhanced ports only available on machines most of us no longer have access to. Secondly, those are virtually the only remakes among a handful of others available on 3ds. It's not the whole library.

Thank you! And yes I will get an XL version :)

Seems rather good to me. Why would I purposely go out and pay more for something with worse screens? :/
Different strokes I guess. I have an original 3DS and it is abominable. Using it makes me feel sad.

The cheap glossy plastic, the poorly seated wobbly buttons and dpad, the stylus in the worst possible position (making it a step back from even the original DS design which had it on the back-right), the shitty unergonomic shoulder buttons, the screen that scratches itself (only somewhat remedied by the XL though, using asymmetrical screens is probably one of the worst design goofs Nintendo has done), the horrid start/select/home buttons which are ugly, hard to press, and hard to use when playing in the dark, etc. It's awful.

I mean, yes, it can play the great games on the 3DS. But it's like eating fine dining on the back of a rotting corpse. Can't wait for the Animal Crossing XL to come out so I will be free.

I just got a 3ds xl recently with fire emblem and 3d land. I was looking at getting monster hunter as well but I don't have a circle pad pro, does it play ok without it or is it pretty much necessary?

Did Nintendo suddenly become a genre? There's stuff in this handheld for everyone.

OP also mentioned like... three games by Nintendo that he was interested in, so I'm not sure what he means by "not interested in Nintendo games."

If you're going to get one, get an XL. Also, if you like 3D platformers, play Mario 3D Land...

It's an action game, get thet second analog or skip the game. Nothing feels good with one analog stick.

It's too bad that games that are on other platforms don't count as games. I guess I can't say Bioshock Infinite is a great game on PS3 because it's a port. Every time people mentioned some of the games they like, somebody has to bring it to their attention that they're, *gasp* playing ports! Not to mention only half the games he mentioned are on other platforms.

What's the difference between a port and a remake.

3DS version is the definitive version of the game.

It is still the exact same game though. No new gameplay content included. It's an almost entirely aesthetic update. Nothing wrong with that imo of course, but it's interesting to see such venom for ported titles from Nintendo fans when the best game on their favourite console is a port.

I'm seeing a lot of excitement for that Donkey Kong port from some of you in other threads as well on a similar note, and it's a "downgraded port" too, is it not?

Hmm... anyways. That suggestion of "original" 3DS games being little else than Mario games and JRPGs isn't exactly a million miles away from the actual situation from my perspective either to be quite honest. As I've stated I'm done with the mascot nostalgia side of Nintendo gaming and right now every 3DS game I'm set to buy this year is a JRPG.

To be frank, I'd be fine with more ports on 3DS if it meant I might get a little choice and variety in what I play.
