Should I download Windows 10, or is it a buggy beta mess?

Had to downgrade back to 7 on my laptop since I was having wireless and Bluetooth issues. It runs very well on my desktop though. Just be careful about unsupported OS when it comes to drivers especially older laptops.

Since it's an older laptop and upgrading from Vista isn't free, your safest option might be to buy Windows 7 or 8.1 and then install Windows 10 as an upgrade giving you the option to roll back if you encounter problems.

I went from 8.1 to 10 and didn't have many issues after disabling Cortana and pinning the programs and folders that I use the most to the start menu.

It's great but don't believe anyone who says it's "perfect".

Even ignoring stuff that it's forcing on you, there are bugs. In my case, i couldn't boot after an update for instance. I had to troubleshoot the shit out of it to be able to see the OS again, without formatting. And that happened to me twice so far. Everytime it updates, i fear that it will mess itself up.

Some games run better in Windows 10 though. Dying Light is one of them.

I've a notebook which I've updated to Windows 10. I was really really sceptical at the begining, but after 4 months I haven't had a single bug or anything else. It's literally Windows 7 in a better form and it also looks really nice.

Only thing that worries me are security and privacy since I am working in IT

I upgraded to 10 pretty much as soon as I could after it released. I've not experienced any major issues except for when I was getting a lot of BSOD's after the November update which must have messed up something to do with my BIOS because after I updated it everything is running smooth again.

I'm really happy with Windows 10 now and I would recommend everyone to upgrade to it. I see no reason at all to stay on 7/8/8.1 unless there is something you need to use that just doesn't work with 10 at all. So at the least it's worth trying it out. If you don't like it then just go back to your previous OS.

I'm getting some BSODs "critical process died" lately. I love Windows 10 and it pretty much ran flawlessly for many months but I think I need to format and do a reinstall.

I had issues with sound stuttering so reverted back to 8. Other than that it was solid as. Will give it another crack in a few months.

I forgot all about Windows Vista, that was a shitty part of Windows history! Windows 10 is fantastic and the best OS since XP.

My personal experience is its fantastic 95% of the time. The other 5% they push an update too fast and I get stuck in an update loop that takes hours to fix. Or something equally inane.

Just make sure you back up and do a clean install rather than the upgrade.

I stupidly assumed the upgrade would be issue free and on both systems it fucked up, on one of them spectacularly so.

It's been smooth sailing since then though, except for some quickly resolved driver weirdness, and the performance increase on my old laptop has been revelatory, which I wasn't expecting.

I use Windows 10 daily in a sys admin role so my use of the system is much greater than what you'd expect from casual use or a pure gaming perspective. I love it and have had few issues though.

That said, if you were using Windows 8.1 I'd say don't bother unless you just want a different GUI (massive oversimplification, but hey-ho). I haven't bothered upgrading at home yet because I just never get around to doing it and don't wish to spare the time required.

But in your case I'd say just get the fuck off Vista - literally anything will be better (ME withstanding).

I have some problems with my installation even after a reset/refresh. So I'm still on 8.1 on my main SSD (and 10 is installed in an older one).

Windows 10 works perfectly for me. Just make sure you don't try anything funny, like "hacks" to speed up the process or modify system files in general. That's like Windows101 if you want a clean and working Windows, but I still saw people doing some convoluted stuff to get their Win10 update started earlier than Microsoft intended, when Win10 was first released. And as a result the update failed or broke something.

I'm sure most succeeded, but my Windows copies have worked near-perfectly (outside PC hardware failure) for 10+ years, so I find it hard to believe when people say that Windows just fails randomly. My bet is that the "nice trick/hack" they learned from the internet was not so innocent after all.

I'm a computer expert so you're in the right hands. <3

OP, how did you manage not to move to 7? Vista is horrendous.

Anyway, personally, I find 10 ok, especially if you're moving from Vista.
But, based on my use since launch, I kinda wish I could go back to 7.

For some reason, it's less stable than 7. Actually, I face more bugs with it than I did when I was on 7's beta release.

It really enjoys getting wonky on me, the status bar likes to freeze and I'd have to basically force a restart to get it working again. The Cortana search bar thing sometimes likes to highlight itself and disable the start button.

Worst of all, though, the forced updating. Fuck that shit. I remember before release people said Windows Pro users will have more control over which updates are downloaded/installed. Well, that turned out to be bullshit, and whether you have Windows 10 Pro or Home, you're treated like a baby where the only say you have over updates is when to restart your computer so that they'd be installed.

It's good for me, only issues so far (not fixed yet):

-taskbar/start menu freezing, requiring restart of explorer.exe or worse, restart of the computer.
-sometimes login screen does not appear after sleep, only a black screen + mouse cursor, CTRL+ALT+DEL seem to fix this.

Been using it since release and never found it to be a buggy mess. Best Windows OS I've used. The only issue I've had is an upgrade going haywire but that was mostly an experiment and I never use upgrades opposed to fresh installs on my own devices.

Just noticed this when I went to turn off Windows Defender real-time protection.

"You can turn this off temporarily, but if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically"

Microsoft getting more and more like Apple. I want my control back.
