4 was my least favorite of the Gears shooters, including Judgement. I don't think it's a bad game, and there were some cool moments, but it definitely played it safe.

Both.
4 has an amazing blockbuster first level .
The story is cool in both and the evolution of the characters is interesting.

Both have great graphics and music.

Honestly, just Play Gears 5. Watch a video recap of 4 prior. I think there is even one in-game.

5 is better but not by much. Battles were a lot more intense and difficult which added to my enjoyment. 4 was pretty good. As much as they come off a little stale with formula. It's nice to see one franchise really sticking to its roots. The biggest problem for me is the newer characters aren't as cool as the OGs. Beautiful looking game though

Gears of war 4's story is so bland, and the new characters are so boring with constant quips a la all of the Marvel movies. The robots are super boring to fight, and the swarm are uninteresting in design. It's not worth it for the single player.
In Gears 5, JD is a much better character, but he plays second fiddle to Kate, who is still insufferable. It's better than Gears of War 4 though, and the multiplayer contains a horde mode with the Locust and Lambent, so you can play against the original antagonists.

Gears 4 and 5 don't hold a candle to the original trilogy, which is a shame. The new characters suck, the swarm lacks the interesting designs of the Locust, the robots are terrible to fight, and the horde mode is overcomplicated.

I have tried playing 4 & 5 multiple times each and just couldn't get into them. I liked the original trilogy on Xbox 360

I finished both Gears 4 & 5. I thought 4 was the better of the two, as it had a tighter story and more memorable battles. A few of the boss battles in 5 are pretty bad, especially the final boss battle. The open world in 5 was pretty pointless and the walking simulator parts in 5 were painful to slog through. I also thought some of the dialog in 5 was meat head SJW corporate cringy, that you could see coming a mile away and tried too hard to be cool. The biggest offense in 5 though is that final boss battle....ugh.

they're both relatively short. May as well play in order. I'm not into the series but probably worth if you have a new video card
