Should I play Uncharted 1?

Wrong.

Wrong.

Wrong.

Nah, the first one is objectively right. In U1 weapons have a lot of kickback and enemies flinch after every hit and dodge like monkeys, causing you to miss some shots. The aiming in general felt off.
In Gears you can just lie back and keep the trigger down until the Locust are mush or you need to reload. It's beautiful and plays like a dream.

So the game basically doing the shooting for you makes Gears have much better gunplay?

What a shit tier opinion. UC4's gunplay is excellent. You're not even doing your bitching correctly. You're supposed to complain about gunplay in UC 1-3 and then say it's really good in UC4 but the pacing is terrible and it's boring.

UC4 did a lot of things excellent; story, graphics, acting, and stealth but gunplay isn't one of them. I mean it's still leagues above 1-3. It shit me hard enough that by the end of the game I turned on auto lock on because I was sick of fighting with it.

it's not very good. the combat in the nathan drake collections improves it a lot over the original

i don't regret playing it, but 2 and 3 feel so removed from the first game that you could probably skip it

Meh, that's your opinion and it's fine for you to have it. I completely disagree though. The gunplay in 4 is very good. Some people want the game to just aim for you and I get that.

What do you do with your hands? How are you so sensitive to controls to distance "gunplay" from one game to another in a galactic scale?

I'll never understand this and the "X pad is an obscene amount of times better than Y pad". I might have alien hands.

Been replaying the first one in the Nathan Drake Collection lately and I still love it. Playing through on Crushing for the challenge, too.

I'm playing it now because I got PSNow

I dunno if it's just the latency from PSNow or what but I've literally never played a third-person shooter with worse controls in my life

This is an atrocity, I'm not using hyperbole. Even basic functions are awkward and clumsy

Again, not quick to blame the game, the PSNow latency might just be horrible

but -god-

It's like 4 hours of your time playing a mediocre game. I think it's ok- very dated, but find some faint glimmer of enjoyment in it's flawed, repetitive gameplay.
It's really night and day how much better UC2 is over UC1.

I started Uncharted 4 but realized since I know nothing of the series, the game was boring me to death in its first hour. Picked up the Nathan Drake Collection, and I'm wondering if I should just skip 1? I had a friend who insisted on this, but I'm not sure I trust his opinion anymore. I know it's significantly worse than the rest of the series, but is it worth it for the story?

If you're the type that needs to know the story / play it to feel "complete" then yes, but it can be a drag (go to area, fight waves of enemies, cutscene, platforming, wave of enemies, repeat... which is almost the entire UC formula... but its boring here).

I would recommend playing it on easy and gunning through it.

UC2 is amazeballs, though.

2>4>3>1

I like how you respect my opinion then throw a backhand at the end there.

Have you even played Gears? Getting headshots with the Longshot or Torque Bow is one of the most satisfying things I've experienced in a modern game. It certainly doesn't aim for you.

I never experienced anything even remotely close in Uncharted.

Anyway it's not like my opinion is an uncommon one.

It's not like the game did the shooting for you, but at least you don't have to readjust your aim every few shots just because your enemy decided to do a little jig.

I don't think you understand why people think the gunplay is crappy. Also, what exciting new features to the gunplay did UC4 do to really shake things up? A rope?

Lol so basically you want big enemy targets that dont move or react to your bullets.

Play the entire Uncharted Collection then take a few weeks rest then start playing Uncharted 4. You will definitely get burnt out if you just power through all of them.

Why don't you tell me why they think it's crappy then? Nobody ever does, except for the guy who wants the targets to sit still so that he can shoot them easier. What did it do to shake things up? Well a rope has nothing to do with gunplay. The fact that the controls are tight and responsive is basically what makes gunplay any good and UC4's are a good as any 3rd person shooters that I've played.

Yes, you should. It's the best in the series (along with 4). Sure, the gameplay is terribly tedious (though personally, I think that that also applies to 2 and 3 to a lesser degree) but the story and atmosphere are awesome (best in the series IMO) and you'll really miss out on some of the character/relationship development that the sequels build on if you skip it.

Yes! One of those. Or at least I want them to drop dead after a few shots. It's a console game, damnit. There is only so much you can do with a controller.

They may both have bullet sponge enemies but Gears has good gunplay to back it up where Uncharted doesn't.

With regards to Uncharted 1, the enemies were serious bullet sponges (not sure if that was rectified in the PS4 collection) but 2 and 3 were nowhere near the sponges of Gears of War enemies.

Plus I never could care about 1 character in Gears. They were all lifeless avatars with no redeeming qualities. I guess it depends on what you come to these games for to be honest.

I'd take the worst Uncharted over the best Gears all the time.

I'd go through it once, yeah. Parts of the game are pretty good. Just go in knowing you're going to be playing one of Naughty Dog's worst games.

Yes absolutely play it.

Uc1>uc4>uc2>uc3

Everybody who says otherwise is wrong :)

It's an above-average cover TPS

If you like the genre, it's got a low time cost and the remaster runs great

Unless you have a backlog filled with games you are just dying to play, I don't know why you wouldn't play it

I mean, sure, check out System Shock 2 if you haven't already, but the game is a fun diversion

Play through all 3, on the easiest setting so the shit-tier waist high wall battle sections are shorter, just to see the story if nothing else.

I enjoyed it back in the day. Never understood the dislike many people on NeoGAF have for it. Before joining this forum, I assumed it was generally well regarded.

I realized the game's shortcomings, and they definitely were parts that would inevitably age poorly.

Regardless, I highly recommend that anyone wishing to get into the series plays 1, but on Easy mode.

All the reasons we loved it so much in 2007, and still a part of why we liked the sequels.

It's definitely worth playing through, though I recommend Easy mode as it was too hard for some people, and it generally makes the game go by faster.

Play the entire Uncharted Collection then take a few weeks rest then start playing Uncharted 4. You will definitely get burnt out if you just power through all of them.

This too. Pace yourself.

Unchated 1 is the second best game in the series so yes. I can assure you it was way better and has more charm than the piece of crap known an Uncharted 3.

So not having to aim or track enemy movement = good gunplay? And enemies who try to avoid getting shot = bad gunplay? Ok then.

I'm not saying U1 has the best gunplay ever or anything, but come on.

Yes! One of those. Or at least I want them to drop dead after a few shots. It's a console game, damnit. There is only so much you can do with a controller.

So you don't like challenge. Fine, play on Easy, it's very unchallenging that way.

Picking enemies off with headshots (which are insta-kills) isn't very hard in U1 once you've had some practice. And it feels pretty good when you get a nice headshot streak. Because you actually did something that required a bit of finesse, you didn't just hold the trigger down and let the game do the rest.

I was in the exact sam boat as you OP and I played through the OG collection.

Don't play UC1. It's a terrible game by 2016 standards, I'm having a hard time believing it was a good game when it was released. Every moment of the gameplay is a slog, waves and waves of bullet sponge enemies with awful gunplay. Not to mention what's gotta be the worst vehicle section I think I've ever played in a game.

The only redeeming aspect is Nate + Sully banter, but it's not worth 6+ hours of your time. Honestly awful game.

Play it. The exaggerations about how "badly it's aged" are over the top. It's still fun.

As for the inevitable complaints about difficulty spikes and "waves of enemies spawning in" I can only imagine it would be a problem if you played it as a cover shooter where you parked in one spot (UC games don't play that way).

I had never tried an Uncharted, but when I heard about 4 coming I thought "Hey I'll get the collection and get up to speed"....I'm still struggling to finish 1. I find it pretty mundane, and basically just a shooter (and not particularly good at that) with little bits of climbing in between.

My second favorite uncharted game. I loved the countless waves of enemies and the unpredictable way the enemies would behave during combat and no I'm not being sarcastic.
