Should I Vita or Veto?

Dear Gaf

Hope you've had an amazing Christmas, I certainly have.
I have a small question that I would like you to answer for me?

Should I buy a Vita?
I am a PS+ subscriber.
I own a PS4.
I owned one at launch but later sold it due to lack of games.
Should I jump back on this train?

Yours
Fellow Gaffer who is confused.

PS
If yes should I get the slim or try find an OG one.

I'm in the same exact position as you. I NEEDS HALP.

Sure, but I can probably get Minecraft/Hotline Miami/insert indie title here on PC for FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR cheaper than their portable/Sony counter-part. It's not worth paying the "portable tax" for a lot of people.

Throw in the ridiculous memory fee because LOL PROPRIETARY MEMORY CARD FORMAT LOL and it's not hard to see the backlash.

Yes, cross-buy/save is a good thing. I don't think anyone will disagree. But when prices are against it?

Sure, but often times it's new indie titles that are given via PS+, or you can get them for almost as ridiculously cheap via PSN sales. Then there's the fact that every month, the Vita gets 2 titles, the PS3 gets 2 titles (sometimes these are cross/buy), then the PS4 gets 2 titles, (ditto on the cross/buy).

If you're a PS+ subscriber, the content is basically endless for the Vita. There is no way in hell I'll get around to playing everything I've been given through PS+, and the worst part, is that it's almost all good.

There's also this notion that everyone's got or wants to game on a PC. Especially indies, which benefit massively from the instantaneous suspend/resume features on the Vita.

I just think it's a non argument that's used as ammunition. It makes no sense.

I'll give you that memory can be a bit much. But it's a one time purchase. Just work with what the system probably came with (4 or 8 gb), and wait for the 16 gig to be $20. It happens pretty often. Portable games don't need THAT much space. I've got a 16gb card that has always had at least 8-15 games on it. If you need more on your card than that, you're either a special case and I feel for you, or you're just being too demanding.

And.....

I'd rather play most games on a television. I'm not going to buy a portable version of a game over the console/PC version where I can play it in a more perferd matter. It being portable dosen't add much.

Kind of sucks when most of your games you'd rather play(first time anyway) somewhere else.
Well some people like me prefer playing on portables. I'm not a fan of playing on my PC and if a game is available on the Vita and PC, I'd no doubt pick the Vita version.

Yep. I just got a Vita and it's great because I will finally play all the indies that I never would have touched on PC despite having an interest in them

I love my Vita. As a dad to a 1 year old I don't get a ton of time to play games - the Vita helps me with that. I bring it to work, play it on breaks and still get to check out some decent games.

I don't really game on PC, so I tend to enjoy all of the indie games that come out on the Vita.

Does't matter either way, that's one of the benefits of it being cross platform. If you prefer it at home, kudo's to you! If you prefer it on a handheld, excellent choice! Play it however you want, there's a good chance the save file can transfer to either.

This notion that an exclusive game is somehow better than a cross buy title is ridiculous. Yeah I'm so upset that Binding of Issac and spelunky aren't exclusive :(

I just got a Vita myself and finished Tearaway. I'd say it's almost worth it for that one game only, and I usually dislike 3D platformers. So, so good.

Vita is a great system if you're interested in Japanese games. If you don't care about anything outside of Sony first party stay as far away as you can.

There's also this notion that everyone's got or wants to game on a PC. Especially indies, which benefit massively from the instantaneous suspend/resume features on the Vita.

What is the massive benefit of suspend/resume? The 3DS can do the same thing, on PC you can just pause and alt+tab.

Nah I take an extreme issue with this notion. I love Japanese games. The Vita does not have a great libary of Japanese games unless you are part of a certain niche. I love the type of Japanese action, rpg, and whatever else games that overflowed on the PSP and PS2. The Vita does not have those type of games.

You don't have to sit in front of your computer.
Not everyone has their computer on all day long.
The 3DS also has relatively terrible power leakage when in sleep mode and many of the indies on the Vita are not on the 3ds. (You can leave you Vita in sleep mode for like a month and it'll still have some juice left.)

The 3DS can do the same thing. Most of these indie games are not available on that though. The massive benefit I'm talking about it being able to suspend your game, do whatever you were doing, and resume hours later. Alt-tabbing is great on the PC, if you plan to stay at your PC. The beauty of the mobile platform is that you can take it anywhere. Playing on the couch? Take it to the bathroom, stuff it in your pocket for dinner, cram it in your backpack, etc etc etc. I'll go weeks at a time without actually saving my game purposefully, because you get so used to just suspending and resuming. You don't even exit the game, like ever. I'll play a strategy RPG and just suspend mid match without hesitation

If you didn't think it had enough games near launch it definitely isn't worth it right now. The system is nearly dead except for indie ports and niche japanese stuff.

It has far more games now than it ever had near launch. OP sold his Vita at around mid 2012 and there have been plenty of great games that have come out since then and not all of them are niche Japanese stuff.

OP I say go for it based on your posts in this thread it seems the system has basically become exactly what you want to own. You like Anime games, you have a PS4 for Remote Play and you have PS+ to get those Cross Buy games and free games the service provides so go buy yourself one.

So why do I buy more Vita games than PS4? How is it possible!

It dpesnt feel dead at all, unless you only care about silly AAA.

Everyone should get a Vita with the following: Freedom Wars, Killzone: Mercenary, Tearaway, Ys: MoC, and your choice of indies (I recommend Rogue Legacy).

I like my OG, but Slim does have some benefits, including better battery life and a micro USB charging port instead of the proprietary one on the OG. The internal 1GB doesn't really matter since you're going to need a memory card anyway.

I can agree with this. A decent portion of Japanese Vita games are for the otaku/fanservice crowd. Wish there were more decent action RPGs, as PSP was killer in that department.

If you like Japanese games, and you're into some of the more niche genres like dungeon crawlers, then yes. That's the primary reason to own the system, as far as I'm concerned. Alternatively, it's a pretty solid portable for playing indie games.

If you're looking for a lot of content outside of those two categories, though, you might be disappointed.

Do you find yourself having a lot of time where you have the ability to play portable games but not console ones (ie commuting on public transit)? If so, you should absolutely get one, because its greatest weakness (that the vast majority of its library is also available on consoles) becomes a strength- my Vita combined with my 30-60 minute NYC subway commute has given me the time to play games over the past two years that would have rotted in my backlog forever if I could only play them on a home console.

If not, then it's somewhat conditional- the bulk of its quality exclusives are niche (and frequently otaku-focused) Japanese titles like Danganronpa. If you love games like that, it's worth a buy. If not, then you should probably pass.

What are you considering a dungeon crawler, specifically? Are we talking games available in the west?

It really depends on if you like the games on the system. People always mention the 3ds because of it's massive library of games, but it doesn't matter if you only like a few of those games. I have a 3ds and only have 5 games that interest me since I got it 3 years ago. I also have a Vita, which in comparison has a much smaller library. Yet, in the year that I've had it, I have upwards of 20 games and I use it way more than my 3ds.

Basically, look at the games the Vita has, and that should tell you if you want one.

Yep, games available in the West. And by dungeon crawler, I'm talking about games like Demon Gaze that are basically games that are very combat focused and that tend to be quite difficult. They're often first person, and almost always look very anime-ish.

Some of those games are actually very good.

Would you mind posting a list?

Demon Gaze is literally the only Vita dungeon crawler I can think of that has been released in the West if we're not counting things like P4, Dragon's Crown, or Conception 2, which all have a very different gameplay style. Which ones am I missing?

I can say with confidence that between PS Plus games, an occasional purchase, and remote play, that my Vita is my most used gaming device by far. Vita>PS4>WiiU>Bone>mobile>3DS (old version)

lot of ports, multiplats, Japanese exclusive games (well if you can read Japaneses, good for you, might as well consider getting a Japanese 3DS while at it)

=/= "will not be any good"

Maybe I shouldn't say they won't be good, but more that aren't appealing enough to sell the system with. The VAST majority of that list is either (late) ports, mobile-like games, or anime stuff of questionable taste (<--opinion disclaimer). Obviously some of the games on the list are exclusive and will be good, but I'm mostly making the case that the days of high-end Vita exclusives are over. I like my Vita and it's far from being a paper-weight, but I also recognize that its future mainly lies in playing ports when I'm away from home rather than looking forward to another moment of brilliance like Tearaway.

I agree that those games aren't going to sell the system. But I'd like to know what do you mean by "mobile like games", and if by ports you're also counting the games that will be day one releases on Vita(games like Axiom Verge, Olliolli 2 or Hotline Miami 2)

Got Minecraft Vita for free. Got Hotline Miami Vita for less than 3€. Got a shitton of games either free with plus/free/for dirty cheap on PSN. I don't think I've ever paid an indie game on Vita more than 4-5€, and even then I think I actually bought just a handful of indie games on Vita and I own almost every indie game I was interested in on Vita. You know: Steam is not the only store that discounts games.
Bonus: there's a number Vita indie/DD excl. games that aren't out on PC, or were released later on steam. And it's not even a small number.

I really can't understand how is it possible that this argument is being brought so often, despite it really doesn't have real bases.

As far as I can tell he didn't even say Steam. PC includes GOG/Desura/etc. As far as 'portable tax' goes I'm assuming he is referring to the fact that games like Terraria cost $15 on Vita where they would be $10 on PC (without any sales on either platform).

There are more indie games on PC and there always will be due to it being an open platform. The PC is the place to go for indie games unless you want portability.

I just mean really small, "distraction" kind of games. For example, I recently played Pix The Cat, and fom the list I'm talking about games like Sketchcross, whatever that pinball game is, the Betty Boop rhythm game, Minutes, etc - not necessarily bad games, just "one-trick pony" kind of things.

And yes day one ports are cool, but a lot of the list consists of late ports - Bastion, Octodad, Shovel Knight, etc. Again, these aren't bad games but just evidence, in my eyes, that the Vita should really be bought only if you're intrested in what it currently offers since all bets are off for future support and exclusives.

All this said, I'm not trying to betray the Vita, I enjoy mine for what it is. But my enthusiam has definitely waned along with Sony's support and advocacy of the platform.

Ok so the real question is OLED or 2.0.

I owned an OLED in the past and fucking loved the screen but better ergonomics is a really big deal to me too. Hmm...

the cheapest one. For now , later if he likes Vita as a console he might change to the other one.
To OP: By all means YES

I have an OLED since launch and absolutely loved it to a point where I was almost paranoid to buy a second OLED as a spare in case mine breaks just to avoid having to buy a Vita 2000.
But during the recent sale on amazon I bought a Vita 2000, just to see for myself how big the difference is since there are a lot of positive comments about it on GAF and maybe return it in case I don't like it.

The main difference between the screens are the black levels. On the OLED blacks are glorious. Actual black instead of the usual LCD very dark grey. It's especially noticeable on startup screens with black screen+ developer logo. That's were the 2000 is a significant downgrade. During normal gameplay it's depending on how dark a scene is not that noticeable though. (and OLED has the black spots in the black issue)
But one thing, that I didn't noticed before a direct comparison was how blue whites are on the OLED. The 2000 shows clean whites that are actual white, on the OLED everything from white to light greys has a slight blue in it.
Reds seem a bit too strong as well. Overall I would say, the OLED can look more colourful the 2000 has more natural colours.
I tested though all my games with both Vitas side by side and fond that in some cases (e.g. Lumines) I prefer the colours of the OLED in others (Persona 4 Golden) the 2000 looks superior to me, but in the majority of games the difference was negligibly small that either is fine.
Both are fine screens with advantages and disadvantages. But the 2000 is a lot more comfortable to hold. The result for me was, that I'm now using the Vita 2000 as my main device.
