Should Microsoft buy Sega?

Should Microsoft buy Sega from Sega Sammy Holdings?

I haven't bought anything from Sega that wasn't a re-release of an older game since VF4. I say, let MS buy Sega. They couldn't mismanage Sega's IP's any worse than Sega has.

Yes they should buy SEGA and le them be the Japanese distribution arm. Bring out a DreamCast themed XBOX 1 and a All-stars racing game that includes characters from SEGA, Rare and Microsoft ips.

I like how you think. A Dreamcast themed Xbox One X could -potentially- look amazing. Having a first party kart racer couldn't hurt either (Sonic All-Stars Transformed was so good).

I'd certainly love to see the rebirth of some classic Sega IPs with a first party level budget behind them as well.

It's certainly fun to think about.

Unless it gives sega more money to build big franchises, then no. I highly doubt sega would sell out to an American company anyway.

If it meant reviving long dead Sega IP then I'd say yes, but MS already have a load of IP that they don't use so it would probably just be a waste of time and money for MS to buy Sega at this stage.

Nah. Microsoft is a company that forces their corporate culture onto whatever company they acquire and that's even worse for a company like Sega than it was for Rareware back in the day.

I say that because I've worked for em before, I've seen how they handle things. Sega would not be a good fit for them in any way, shape or form. Companies such as EA are far more in line with how Microsoft views gaming and would fit in far better in terms of corporate structure although I see Microsoft as a net deficit to EA as well still for various reasons. Besides, Sega's IP's are not worth much outside of Sonic or Hatsune Miku and frankly, even those don't get anywhere close to what MS wants to see. Streets of Rage, Shining Force, Daytona etc etc etc have absolutely no value to a company like MS and it's completely not in line with what they've been doing in the Xbone era.

I really don't see MS being interested in the type of games Sega makes.

They seem to be pushing more towards the games a service model which doesn't align with stuff like Yakuza or Persona 5.

I think you are also overestimating the power of their IP's in Japan. The home console market over there isn't as strong as it used to be and I don't see people running to buy another console just because of Sega games.
Not to mention that MS already tried going for the Japanese market last gen. They locked down a ton of Japanese exclusives like Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden 2 , etc and Japan still didn't care.

And you can't forget negative reactions from the audience. People have been playing some of these games on Sony and Nintendo consoles for a long time.
If people finish Yakuza 6 in a few weeks and then are told "if you want to play the next entry in the franchise you'll have to buy an Xbox" a lot of reactions will me more "fuck you MS/Sega" than "yay! Here's $500 for a X1X"

Well I used to be a huge Sega fan (see avatar), but at this point I don't really care. Sega hasn't been a major actor in gaming since a few years after they left hardware, and only survive through a handful of updates from their old IPs (well, Sonic, mostly).
Now maybe a purchase would change things and give them enough funds to be creative and relevant again. People hoped it would happen when Sammy bought them and it didn't, but then MS is a software company and not a pachinko one. So eh, why not, there's not much to lose.

I don't want it but if that happens...

I want the SEGA name and headquarters to stay in Japan, Europe, and America.

Don't remove anything about SEGA, and make the new SEGA console the Dreambox.

No. SEGA have various contacts with Sony and Nintendo that they probably don't want to lose. I don't see them wanting to do what Microsoft tell them too or run the risk of their studios being shut down if they aren't preforming, which, being completely honest would likely happen when you consider the demographics of the XBOX and the IP from SEGA. Imagine Sonic only on XBOX? I don't think you'd increase console sales, you'd hurt game sales. And while you can argue that Microsoft could do a MineCraft and allow Sonic to come to all platforms, I'd just argue that if that is the case, Microsoft should drop hardware. Honestly I believe they would be far more profitable with their games on all platforms and really pushing the PC and connected technologies with Valve.

No, there is no point. They may get the IPs but the whole arcade side of the business would be a massive pain the bum for MS. I doubt the arcade side would split from the IP/software part, so I cant see it happening.

In any case If someone is going to own Sega it would probably be Disney.

I want think at least they could do a better job with the IPs but then you look at what happened to Rare and, well...

This is why they shouldn't, and I think probably why they won't. Very few of the acquisitions MS have made in the gaming space have gone well. Rare is a shadow of itself, and Bungie bought themselves back out. They seem to have learned better.

So what if they word it as a merger then, rather than a buyout? Call the japanese version the Sbox1X.

I might even import it if it looks pretty cool.

The only way this would be good would be if it meant Yakuza would come to Windows 10, but knowing Microsoft they'd more likely just kill off Yakuza altogether and focus on pumping out Sonic games at a faster rate than even Sega of today.

Be a huge blow for Nintendo to lose Sega and Atlus support, I mean they delivered a dozen exclusives between wiiu and 3ds.

Im not sure how MS would manage Sega, I assume a minecraft situation with some freedom.

No, because then they would own Atlus too and that would probably mean no Atlus games on Sony or Nintendo platforms.

What would be the point? You'd get none of the talent that made it what it was. I believe that a good Sega game is more than the IP.

That's all dead now.

I can't see it. Yakuza is a Japanese publisher who make games not typically associated with your typical Xbox gamer in mind. Games such as Yakuza don't even come to Xbox despite nothing keeping them from doing so except the lack of market for the game.

Remember how last gen Microsoft got exclusive access to the creator of Final Fantasy's new studio. It gave us Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, but both underperformed on the platform?

Why would anyone want this? lol

All the people who voted yes is because their console of choice is losing the console war. Give it another year and they'll be 3rd place. Buying companies are a bad idea. EA has gotten shit for buying companies up and then killing them off. If this question was asked about Sony buying Sega, I can guarantee you that all the people who voted yes would vote no.

I can't vote maybe because I am a new member.I would had voted for no because Sega has lots of great IPs which should not be exklusiv to a platform instead should be enjoyed by most gamers on different platforms.

It would probably benefit Microsoft in the way of adding some top notch exclusives Valkyria Chronicles, maybe revisit beloved franchises like Panzer Dragoon, hell maybe even the Skies of Arcadia franchise but I personally dont wanna see it happen.

Aside from Sonic Mania, the spirit of Sega has been dead a long time. Would't mind seeing what some MS cash could do for the brand.
I don't know what having all their games canceled in a witless quest to make them all into "live services" would accomplish in terms of reinvigorating Sega. Seems more like it'd eventually whittle the company down to a small brittle shell of what it currently is.

Sony doesn't have a content and talent problem. Microsoft does. Unless Microsoft Studios magically transforms and scales in the next 2 years, Microsoft is going to need to buy another studio for content and talent to be able to make their subscription services worthwhile, especially if they're planning on launching Xbox Game Pass on PC and mobile.

I have all the consoles and a gaming PC, this has nothing to do with me fanboying for Microsoft. I play my PS4 more than anything else too. That doesn't mean I don't want Microsoft to grow and transform the gaming landscape. I see it as in every consumer's best interest to see Xbox Game Pass grow.

So MS Studio didn't have this problem during the 360 days? Early Xbox One days? What changed? Could it be because they're selling worse out of the 3 consoles that now its an "issue"?

Game Pass is not every consumer's best interest. Put every game on Game Pass and every developer will go bankrupt. No more AAA titles for us consumers.

Yeah, they're not outputting as much as they used to because being in 3rd place has made it less attractive for third parties to develop exclusives for it. It's why Microsoft has had to step up Microsoft Studios and be more present as a third party. They wrongly banked on third party support, and now are changing strategy.

Yes obvs.

I don't see how it helps gamers. I would assume Sega games would likely become exclusives. Has any once-great studio bought by MS flourished under MS?

Microsoft will buy them and then shut them down. lol

This, and I don't think MS wants to deal with Sega corporate culture. You get the feelings MS would prefer to create a PC/XBOX hybrid. I wouldn't be surprised if MS started making it's own XBPCs at various performance levels. It'd give them an angle against SONY that they can't seem to find presently

No way.

SEGA is too legendary to get bought by M$.

SEGA is the king of arcade and has one of the best video game history.

I don't want Microsoft kill the true feeling and spirit of SEGA.

SEGA has made the most beautiful consoles ever, and still owns some iconic and mythical franchises.

They don't need Microsoft at all.
Bernie Stolar attempted to sell Sega to Microsoft when the Dreamcast was about to launch. Microsoft said forget it after Sega kept upping the price.

So many theories but i think it may be a bit overblown.

These tweets seem to be just a subtle nod to microsoft for one reason or another. One likely hinting to a game, some kind of partnership announcement similar to when sega announced three exclusive sonic games for ninte do or it could mean nothing. Or maybe MS is getting the oppurtunity to publish a sega/sonic game.

Or maybe a backwards compatibility announcement for games like generations and unleashed.

The thing is, this also allows money to come out for some of the more niche titles in Sega's portfolio. Like, maybe a Burning Rangers sequel, or Nights 2: Electric Boogaloo? Maybe a new Oasis title? Or Eternal Champions 2: The Eternal Eternals? GunValkyrie 2 with a free controller (since you'll probably break the analog stick on at least one playing it)?

There's a metric s***ton of IPs that Microsoft could leverage into exclusives that would set the gaming world on fire...some that are LONG overdue to be revisited and that Sega doesn't seem keen to do anything with right now (as they're treading water to some degree).

I would only be okay with this if it guaranteed that every Sega property had a proper PC version/port. As opposed to being Xbox exclusive.

Not necessarily. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft but is not exclusive to PC/Xbox.

I 100% agree this could be the financial backing Sega needs to bring back some of these beloved franchises just like Eternal Champions, niceeee! Still I like having the ability to play Sega games multiplatform but it might be a necessary compromise.
