This. So much this.Yes. Mario 64 cannot be rereleased enough times.
Also, even if it was a remake, I would pay $40.

"Just"? That was nine years ago.
A remake would be cool, but it needs (imho) some more polygons. Textures only ... well ...

In a perfect world i would be able to play Mario 64 VC which i purchased on the Wii VC on my 3DS.
If they did a sequel what would it be? Mario ____? How many bits is the Wii U?
Before anyone questions me, yes, I'm joking.
No. Mario 64 has been rereleased enough times.
Also, even if it was remade, it would definitely be $40.
I feel like this is a very new-gen opinion. Mario 64 still easily trumps Galaxy titles on the fundamental gameplay--controls. It is fun just to run and flip and jump and all that shit in an open field in Mario 64, yet then they also add all that stuff and crazy platform islands to interact with and it is a blast. Galaxy is much more task-dependent to be fun since its planet designs are more single-surface conceptually and require more of a downward perspective to be kept. Mario 64 is more about wild freedom and imaginative experimentation to discover stars.
But let's not get off on that tangent of arguing which is better, I'm just explaining why Mario 64 is not made obsolete by new releases.

I once had a guy older than 20 years of age tell me with a straight face that, since the nes was 8 bit and the snes was 16 bit, and the playstation was 32 bit whereas the n64 was "64 bit", the ps2 and gamecube were 64 and 128 bits respectively, and the wii and ps3 were 128 bits and 256 bits therefore. I had to make an effort not to laugh like a maniac.
This. Just play the DS version on 3DS.The DS port plays pretty well thanks to the circle pad, the upscaling doesn't look half bad either.

I will say 3D World is amazing genius as a 3D translation of the SNES Mario World concept. Mario 64 is a different thing entirely, but 3D World is really fantastic, and I feel like right now with 3DS and Wii U Nintendo is getting past pure experimentation stages to find what their core identity in 3D games will be. That is really important for them, to continue with a strongly defined yet unique identity in the massive and tumultuous market in a Disney-like way. My other thread is more open to discussion of such strategies for them and how things should/might play out.Very nicely put. I answered Nintendo's poll on Super Mario 3D World very similarly.
I'd rather have Mario Sunshine on 3DS.
At the very least couldn't Nintendo release a patch that enables control with the 3ds analog stick?
Because 8-way digital control is NOT Mario 64. You have to try it yourself to feel your dreams being crushed.Wait, I just read up on the game--you don't *need* to use touch controls to control Mario? I thought you did. Why was the game so panned by some if you could use regular controls? Was it a good remake after all?

Playing 3D movement games from the DS on the 3DS fixes their controls, it's like magic.

I was referencing the horribleness of playing any non-2D game with that shit d-pad that gives me blisters. Almost gave up on KH: 358/2 Days out of pure pain. Plays much better with the circle pad. As does Re: Coded.I'm afraid that this is entirely your imagination at work. The slide pad is still only feeding 8 way digital movement to the game. It's simply less of a strain than the original DS pad was, that's all.
I like most of the new features of Mario 64 DS, but the controls really hurt what the port could have been.

VC releases and a 9 year old port to a system that should never have had it. No, I think we're due for a remaster.No. Mario 64 has been rereleased enough times.

Analog. Fucking. Control.I don't understand, isn't 64 DS enough?
You get the sense from reading Iwata Asks that Nintendo's primary motivation for OoT-3D and SF64-3D (and WW on WiiU for that matter) was to expand the system's early software library.Looking at OoT and Star Fox 64 on 3DS, it seems like a great fit. OoT in particular is really, really well done. Thing is, Mario 64 was already spruced up for DS, but they also dun goofed because it removes real analog, which neuters what the game is all about. Should they/would they do yet another revision to give it real analog, even nicer textures, and 3D? Mario 64 is still one of the greatest platformers out there, and its gameplay format is perfectly suited to being a portable playland, so I would actually be happy to see them do it, so long as it wasn't $40. I'd even just take an eShop release of the N64 version for 3DS that used analog but didn't add anything else, even though it'd be out of step with OoT and SF64.
It'd just show how shallow the recent Mario games are in comparison so no they won't do it.
