Should Nintendo release Metroid Online with its next home console game?

And release it not so long after the single player game just like Konami did with Metal Gear Solid?

I really believe having a solid online mode for a game such as Metroid would make the series much more popular (in the US at least). And to be honest, I can't believe they haven't made another one yet since Metroid Prime Hunters was really fun to play online (it's a shame we can't play the game anymore though).

Best case scenario would be to have Retro Studios working on the single player game and to have Splatoon's team to working on Metroid Online (while having some Retro Studios guys help them).

Do you guys think this would be a good idea?

What is with all the Metroid threads lately? Was there some news I missed?

I honestly don't think Retro is doing anything Metroid-related right now. If they are, it's probably a 2D Metroid game. The Splatoon team is also still working on DLC for Splatoon. They're probably gonna jump straight to Splatoon 2 once they're done with DLC for said game.

If they plan to do such a thing, then sure that sounds like an OK way to go about it

I'd rather they concentrate on getting a solid single player Metroid out before they think about multiplayer.

If they do go the multiplayer route, I'd hope for something that's not the Quake-lite route they took with Hunters. Go for an asymmetric co-op game where one player plays as Samus and the other one plays as Houston or Anthony or something.

No. Metroid is a game about isolation.

That is true of classic Metroid, but it can be different if it's based on a spin-off instead. With that said, I'm not so hot idea on the idea of Retro Studios doing an online-based Metroid Prime-style shooter.

The single player sure.

I dont think anybody would be boo-hooing if a fucking amaziballs metroid was released that had an online multiplayer mode.

While not online, there was a Multiplayer mode in Metroid Prime 2.

It sucked.

I really dislike this (honestly pretentious) convention of calling the multiplayer portion of a game "______ Online." It will inevitably be accompanied by some delusional fangasm exclamation of "I can't belive they're giving us ______ Online for free!" No, fuck you, it's just multiplayer, it doesn't count as a second game because it shipped incomplete at launch and they gave it a slightly different name.

And no, Metroid is not the IP that will springboard Nintendo multi. It has about the same multi appeal as Bioshock or Deus Ex. A new IP designed around multi, like Splatoon, would always be a better idea. The sales bare that out.

I'm hoping for Bloodborne Hunter's Happy Dream House Decorator myself.

Edit: the point being that multiplayer Metroid is antithetical to the core theme of Metroid in my view. Prime 3 had almost too many NPCs and that abomination that followed it was abhorrent because of its strange take on the narrative.

Hunters was a little fun thing but that isn't Metroid. Metroid isn't about deathmatch, although it sort of works with the whole bounty hunters angle but it is about exploring.

I feel Galactic Federation works cause you don't play as Samus and you are soldiers who do shoot everything.

In short, yes a Metroid for new/current console but not online unless it is like Demon Soul's. Imagine dying and leaving behind transmissions and Samus finding them like echoes of dead soldiers.

I think it would be Nintendo's best Massively Multiplayer Concept. Bounties and intergalactic factions would make for a fun game if they managed to find a way to make progression a little more brisk for Nintendo fans that aren't likely to get into the prohibitive grinding that comes with most MMO games.

I'm firmly in the camp that Nintendo should stick with Wii U for at least 5 years, and owe Wii U owners a proper Metroid if and Zelda game before any new system. Anything less and I don't give shit what they release.

You are in for a let down. They have quite clearly begun to move on from the Wii U.

I don't get the appeal, Metroid has always had a vibe of loneliness woven into its fabric. Making it a big online game... why even use the name?

No Man's Sky might be the closest thing to a "true" online Metroid.

Folks, you do realize that the op is talking about a multiplayer mode that is released after, and as an add on, to an actual singe player metroid game, not a metroid game that is just an online multiplayer game, right?

I do, yeah. Would still be seen as an insult to the metroid franchise and taking resources away from the single player game.

Yeah, you're right. Part of me holds out hope they will realize all they have left really is their reputation and will reconsider, but I'm not holding my breath. I am going to laugh my ass off when this blows up in their face though. Launching a new system 3 years into PS4's life cycle is not going to go well when they just shit all over the public trust.

Really.

So if this metroid releases, and it is unanimously heralded as hands down the best metroid game since Metroid Prime and Super, that finally gets back to nailing what the metroid series is about.

You would throw a shit fit about a secondary multiplayer mode that was added?

No Man's Sky being online is about as much as Destiny not being an (bad) MMO to me. It is barely Demon's Souls online without PvP/E. But i agree that that if it ever went online, it shouldn't be like an MMO or competitive shooter if Samus is playable.

I wouldn't, not talking about myself. Just an observation on the purist fans. People were pissed about the multiplayer mode in Prime 2 existing for example.

Pumping more money into a games on a console nobody cares about isn't going well now. The Wii U is going to have a relatively short life but four years isn't that bad.

Sure, they also launch the new system with ports of Ghouls and Ghosts Online and Shenmue Online.

Truly, the new Nintendo Pointmissatron 12000 will be a force to be reckoned with.

[edit: missed the 'game' on the end of the subject... still, overriding priority for Metroid should be single player. Metroid has never established a particularly interesting array of side characters anyone wants to play as. I can see where people would say "well, why don't they try?" but honestly I feel like trying to do that explicitly undermines the core concept of the series. The games' biggest point of identity is a sense of isolation, a lone hero versus hostile alien worlds. Trying to mix in a cast of supporting characters inherently sabotages the recipe.]

Didn't Sega Saturn have a 4 year shelf life in NA? How'd that turn out?

Yes please more Metroid games that are the complete opposite of a Metroid game.

Its like making Zelda into RTS.

Srsly now. Metroid is SP game that is about exploring some isolated space station/planet. Its not about hanging out with his friends and killing stuff.

as long as it's a game based around exploring planets and fighting monsters and not some totally unmetroid arena FPS thing like hunters was, sure

that's one of those things that i think Federation Force is getting right, it's still about exploration and giant boss fights and things that really feel like Metroid. Hunters was so stupid

How did it turn out for the Xbox?

Great comeback, but awful comparison. Not the same, not even close. PS5 will not launch In 17" and the Xbox was a new product from a new player. It was not the product of a company with a damaged reputation in the console industry.
