Surely this is a joke. They didn't give Microsoft anything better. Microsoft simply went out and took it, they paid for it. They laid out their target and AMD helped them build it. If Sony had asked for a larger chip they would have gotten it.

True, but Cerny saved the company. PS3 was killing it. So Sony trusts Cerny to keep them profitable.

All of these arguments are based off the idea that Sony, in your words, has given an "upper hand" to the xbox.
I call bullshit on that. There are so many things beyond raw numbers that Sony highlighted in their presentation which hint at this console being, if nothing else, unique and developer friendly.
And anyway, the PS2 was nowhere near as powerful as the Xbox, but which console gets the most fond mentions?
Their SSD isn't the same as the SSD in regular computers and laptops, they seem to hint that their custom gear takes out so many bottlenecks and such that this shortfall in raw power hardly matters.

Sony designed their chip with AMD. I am sure as shit the Xbox SEX and PS5 teams isolated themselves and did not share info as each company would have required. AMD didn't give MS a better product, MS co designed it. Sony chose a weaker option. If anything they should abandon the leadership that made those decisions, not a partner that kept a competitor's details secret.

That's a very good question. And one that I think Sony should revisit. I think the consoles are eager to choose AMD obviously for the price. I'm just not sure Jensen's team want to accomodate selling chips for literally nothing. In a way, I think Nvidia has just adopted the stance of wide open R&D on the PCs so they can charge premium for their boards. I don't blame them from a business perspective.

It's not PS5 specs, not AMD. It's Sony killing themselves with their PR and their messaging. Its almost like there's no one in the office. No one running the show. Putting the in-depth dive before they communicated specs in an understandable language.?! Showed some games and features that would make people go 'o yeah' . I watched the presentation (2 AM Aus time) this morning and I could not believe how bad it was. 40 minutes dedicated to SSD and audio? They should thank the DF for the follow up video.

To make things simple, AMD has a Menu, Microsoft paid for lobster & shrimp while Sony got an Apple walnut salad.

It's all about the form factor imo. Sony chose a traditional console shape along with the thermal limits that brings. MS said fuck it and put performance first, form second. We'll see how it plays out. I've no doubt that some buyers will be put off by the shape of the XSX.

For DSP work, AMD created "Cell 2.0" with AMD's CU IP.LOL...abandon amd and go where exactly, nvidia? Maybe Sony can make Cell 2.0 for ps6
PS5 DSP is like a mini AMD GpGPU without the rasterization hardware, hence a modified CU for DSP work.

There was the Reddit leak in January 2019 that basically got everything right. At that point Microsoft must've known that the leak was legit (because they were indeed building a 12 TF machine and a 4 TF Lockhart) and realized that Sony is actually at 399/8 TF (at the time, then Sony built another APU for 9.2 TF). And there was additional evidence when Sony decided to go to Azure for PS Now. They can probably run PS5 in a virtual machine on Xbox Series X cloud hardware.
