Should Sony drop the "Playstation" name for the next generation?

Another possibility would be dropping the numbers. Just call it Playstation again.

This goes for MS as well. Just Xbox next time. Imagine if Apple numbered their products. "iPod 5" just sounds lame.

EDIT: beaten by Shagg. Oh well. he's right.
You can't do that in an industry where every generation the new software can't be played on the old machines. If Playstation 4 was merely "Playstation", you'd have people buying the software and wondering why it didn't work on their PS1 - PS3. Some consumers (uninformed parents mostly) have a hard enough time keeping the different formats straight as it is, and end up trying to buy Wiistations or whatever.

iPod always plays the same base music formats, so there's no need to differentiate.

I agree with the consensus that Sony ( and Microsoft) should drop the whole "2,3,4" (or "720", which would be absolutely moronic) and stick with just Playstation and XBOX.

No... just change each iteration numbering to roman numerals though... it worked for Mitsubishi for years... (though, in the us is just evolution, though ppl still call it by number anyways :lol )

Uh no. Sure maybe PS4 will be the most I could take with the numbers, but it's not necessary.

While I don't think Sony will or should drop tzhe PlayStation name, I disagree with what you said. Nintendo dropped the Nintendo naming of consoles in two stps (GameCube->Wii) after having lost their third generation with the brand name and also dropped the Game Boy branding without any pressure to do so. Sega also tried dropping their Sega branding or making it more subtle with Dreamcast. It's all a matter of changing perception so there might be a point where Sony decides it was better to go with another naming. On the other hand they also continue using Walkman years after it's prime for a new series of music players, so they might just look at it in a different way compared to Nintendo or Sega.

Hey, that is great. Last thing I want is Sony to turn into a non-game nintendo, or a defunct Sega. I don't want sony to change so much that the playstation branding no longer fits. No thanks. Nintendo's brand is "nintendo", regardless of what they call their consoles. Sony, on the other hand is a lot more than just videogames, so a solid brandname for that vertical makes sense.

They're still using walkman, and it would've been perfectly viable if they hadn't missed the digital music express.

This is a good point. I think it's the numbers that have gotten old for me. They should have called it Playstation HD. That would have made the name unique and sold the message at the same time.

My point is just that it feels like it's getting too stretched out, over-used, and getting old. In relevance today:

Playstation 2
Playstation 3
Playstation Portable
Playstation Store
Playstation Network
Playstation HOME

And who knows what else they're working on.

ahahhahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahaha no..

The numbering am not a huge fan of but what else could they use in order not to confuse people. Playstation Tiger?!

If there ever will be a PSP2, i will do my best to avoid it at all cost (unless somehow it DOMINATES everything!!). I mean seriously...PSP2 sounds like something out of the streets of china that plays Sega Genesis cartridges.

PSP lite? Sure, i'll buy that.
PSP *insert badass word*? Hell yea! ill buy that too.
PSP2? Agh!!!!!

It might do MS good to ditch the Xbox name, I always thought that was such a goofy name.

Although looking at 'Zune', I'm not sure if a brand name change would be for the better, or worse.

Drop Playstation name? No.
Drop the sequential numbers "4, 5, 6, 7, 8,"? Maybe..
I agree the numbers will get kinda of dumb like Playstation 6!

Mabey they could go the way of Nintendo: 64, Gamecube, Wii ect....

I don't know........?

so you're saying that they should copy nintendo...again

this thread is about as absurd as nintendo dropping the Gameboy brand name. They have invested too much in it. Everyone knows Gameboy they will never drop that name
...
...
oh wait.

You people are hopeless. Do you even understand the concept of branding?

Also, what are they going to call them if the drop the numbers? Playstation Revolution? Xbox Rox? Some other really stupid name thought up by a marketing guy?

XBOX 360.

Say it with me again.

XBOX 360.

I was trying to come up with a compromise but I suppose you're right. It's stretched pretty thin.

Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast... They can't just use "Sony Deathstar" or whatever, because Sony's a huge consumer electronics company with many different types of products. But "PlayStation Deathstar" gets across that it's a gaming system (of EVIL!)

LMFAO

Yes, it does more harm than good at this point. There is such a thing as bad publicity: see Playstation 3, Playstation Portable, Official Playstation Magazine, exc.

PlayStation Portable?

I think they should rename it the Thongmaster 5000. As good as any other if we're considering that Sony would just toss away established brands for no reason.

Well.. "Playstation" is a very good and suitable name for a console i must say. Playstation have also almost become a synonym for gaming, "everyone" knows the word Playstation and thinks of gaming when they hear it. They could drop it and come up with a new name, but its a pretty big risk tho. A change of name can do them good, but also bad, its impossible to say for sure. Of course, its not only the name that matters if its going to be successful or not.

How are you going to tell them apart if you drop the ****ing numbers? YOU were the one who wanted them to drop the 360/720/1440 naming scheme, so I asked how you'd differentiate between different iterations, and you reply with Xbox 360?

*facesmashkeyboard* sdjjsfjk

So the PS4 should be called...?
Something that means more than "the replacement for the replacement for the replacement for the PlayStation".

You're an idiot.

My response was in response to this:

You people are hopeless. Do you even understand the concept of branding?

Why in the **** would I name a console with a name it's already been given? I was implying that XBOX 360 was a ridiculous attempt at maintaining brand.

Do I know what they should change it to? no. That's not my job. But Sega and Nintendo have been doing it for ages. If Sony and Microsoft are so intent on maintaining the Playstation and XBOX Brand respectively, they'll come up with something.

Now if you'll excuse me, i'm waiting for my XBOX 1440 announcement.

icarus-daedelus said:
So then why didn't you quote that? Instead you quoted:

Leading me to believe you were responding to something else. But by all means, let's get into name-calling.

Fine with me. Because it was pretty obvious what I was referring to. Don't blame me for you misconstruing it in the first place.

Nintendo is much more of an established brand name in the gaming world than Sony - same applied to Sega till they became 3rd party. Because Sony has identified their gaming products more with the Playstation name than the Sony name, it wouldn't be all that wise to drop good old PS.

I don't disagree with this. I never said that Sony should drop the playstation name - Just the numerical suffixes. Because no matter how you slice it, Playstation 7 is going to sound ridiculous.

sure there are differences between the two, but you said it's "not even remotely similar"

which isn't true. there are similarities.

in any case, i honestly doubt sony will drop the PS name. they're still spruiking the walkman brand after all, and that goes as far back as 1979.

And look how embarrassing that is. They relaunched the Walkman brand assuming it would kick the upstart Apple back down, and Apple handed them their lunch. With a ridiculous name like iPod.

yeah, i didn't say it was a good idea.
