With all the Nintendo nostalgia news (Pokemon Go, Nintendo NES mini), I've always wondered why Sony has not embraced their past as much.
To Sony's credit they have great PS1 PSN library, only playable on PSP/PS3/Vita. However, they're much better priced than Nintendo's VC, and the PS2 HD classics on the PS4 looks like a great initiative. And, of course, there's PSNow.
However, they are second oldest active platform holder, but they've historically been reluctant to harness nostalgia.
One could say it's because PlayStation, by and far, has been a machine where 3rd parties reigned supreme--MGS, 3D FF, GTA, Tekken, Ridge Racer, and so on. These are properties that Sony does not own or control. MS took notes on this strategy, catering very much to third parties. Both companies pour tons into their publisher relations in comparison with Nintendo, whose always done things differently.
GT and GoW are probably there most consistent franchise in terms of releases, both around for 3 generations or more.
They're the definite market leaders now so they're not in panic mode like they were in the PS3 days, but it seemed Crash rumors really got people hyped.
Personally, do have a lot of Sony nostalgia--Motor Toon GP, Jumping Flash, Parrapa, Ape Escape.
Most of these live on as only avatars for PSN profiles
Maybe PSVR will revive these franchises.
Should Sony embrace nostalgia more?
