Should Square-Enix retcon Advent Children and/or Crisis Core?

I dissagree

As a black dude i like seeing actual well thought out and interesting character designs for black folk.

I understand your opinion, and I can see why you prefer his redesign. I think the caricature of Mr. T they used for creating Barret's personality and character are problematic. I would love to see his sense of humor and vulgarity return though.

Is there really a canon though? I've only seen Advent Children and it just seemed like a mess designed to get as many of the game characters in the film as possible.

I still liked it though for what it was.

Speaking of Crisis Core. They should HD it up and put that out before 7 releases. I'm sure we've got till 2020 or so to make it happen.

I would prefer that they just ignore the Compilation stuff. It was all very awkward and forced. It bore little relation to the original work in plot, characterization, or tone. And ultimately it was not nearly as popular or well received as the original game.

A clean break and a fresh take would be the best bet for Remake.

I did not mean for that to rhyme.

I think if they want to make the best possible remake, they should ignore everything that is not the original game. That's just my own awful opinion, though. I never played or had interest to play any of the side-games, except for Dirge which is just a bit of silly fun with good ole Vince and Cait.

AC and DC both take place after FF7 proper, not sure how the remake would even be able to retcon them. Other than not expressly going out of its way to acknowledge that characters appearing in them exist at this pony in the timeline, but that's not really the same as a retcon.

Crisis Core is kind of in the same boat. The events concerning Cloud and even Aeris are mostly fine, but I don't want to see Genesis or Angeal popping up in the remake. Those guys suck. But I guess that's not technically a retcon either?

Would be super dumb to retcon them. But I also see no real reason either should be included into the FF7 remake.

I've never played FF VII the closest thing I got was Crisis Core which is IMO a masterpiece I liked everything about this game even the Loveless stuff !
So I'd rather have it acknowledged in the remake.

Crisis Core/Dirge of Cerberus spoilers:
Angeal, Hollander and Lazard die during the course of Crisis Core.
Genesis is taken away by Shinra at the end of CC, and doesn't wake up until after the events of DoC.

So I can't see any reason for the new characters to be involved in a FF7 remake apart from as brief cameos. No need for any retcons.

The only lasting thing AC/BC/CC/DoC did was provide some humanity to the Turks. So perhaps they'll be a little less shitty in the new FF7.

I kind of understand the argument for retconning Advent Children, even if I don't agree with it. But what's the argument for retconning Crisis Core? It's a prequel that doesn't creatively restrict them in any way, as it's set before the main plot happens, and provides some fun backstory for the main plot. It works pretty well storewise and has a pretty emotional ending.

Like, are people just saying that they should retcon it because they didn't like the story as opposed to its canonical status being a problem? Because I don't get that feeling. It's not like the amount of soldiers Zack fought changes canon in any significant way, like...if Crisis Core was retconned, literally nothing would change.

I could kind of see the Advent Children argument in a "They could take the 'after FF7' time period into something else" kinda way, but it still seems silly to me, personally.

The ff7 compilation was a decade ago... and largely a dud. I expect it to be ignored

I expect new sequels/spinoffs, though

Crisis Core and Advent Children are fine and work well within the established lore of the FF7-verse. I would be very interested to see some of the Crisis Core story stuff be alluded to in the remake.

Dirge of Cerberus should be buried in a box somewhere and forgotten. Nothing about that game is coherent or interesting.

Crisis Core is actually an amazing game. Yes, they kind of shoehorned Gakt in it but if you focus on the story of Zack and his relationship with Aerith and other characters of FFVII, it makes FFVII even deeper and more poignant.

And that ending.....

Nailed it. And yes.... That ending...

I loved Advent Children. Pure fan service. I watched it every day for a week after getting it.

The Blu-Ray upgrade was a catastrophe though... they bumped the upgraded scenes to 1080 resolution, but left the untouched scenes at 480 resolution. Absolutely horrible. They should have re-rendered the entire film at 1080 or higher... why it wasn't in the first place is beyond me...

For OP's question, I'm good either way... the original game works with those sequel/prequel products. The new game may stand completely on its own. It will have some twists... that's for sure.

The only lasting thing AC/BC/CC/DoC did was provide some humanity to the Turks. So perhaps they'll be a little less shitty in the new FF7.

The Turks had a ton of humanity within the base FF7 game. They're introduced as assholes but then they're also getting drunk in Wutai and talking about what girls they have crushes on.

I loved Crisis Core. Balled like a baby at the ending.

Rewrite it. Make an alternative version of the story. A better story.

Uh, that would be a completely different game. I don't think that's what the fans of the original want from a remake, tbqh. The game needs to be retranslated though.

I love Zack, he's my favourite FF protagonist,
and he should stay dead. It's part of what makes his character so likeable, that he sticks to his convictions and dies with a smile on his face. Actually living through that would cheapen it to me because we take for granted that characters live through risking their lives to prove something.

Zack died being himself and that's what made him so fun and memorable. There were clear consequences for living the way he did, and he still lived it to the end with a smile on his face. Dying makes his character a lot more interesting than if he lived, in my opinion.

I'd rather they not include Angeal or Genesis. And AC happens after VII, so I don't think it'll really affect the remake, but I wasn't a fan of the story or new characters.

Hoping they stick close to the original story as much as possible. Fleshing out some characters/plot points is fine, but I'd rather they not add too much.

crisis core is amazing, best psp game by a mile and the best ff game by a mile.

Wut. I liked crisis core but this is just laughable. It's a very restrictive game, both in gameplay and freedom, when compared to other games in the franchise.

I don't see how Advent Children would show up in the remake considering it's a sequel, only relevance I see it having is with the ending and whether they choose to show the people's exposure to the
lifestream causing the Geostigma.

Crisis Core would flesh the story out in a great way

I don't see how Crisis Core would slip in either bar passing references in the Nibelheim reveal. The detail the game gives you is more than enough and the entire Angeal/Genesis gubbins is an unnecessary distraction.

That would completely change the story of the main game and also take away from Crisis Core's ending as well.

I wouldn't mind at all if all FF Compilation 'lore' was discarded when considering how to move forward with the VII Remake.

I personally couldn't reconcile with all the supporters of any of the Compilation entries, including Crisis Core (though it was the most respectable of all the entries). Aside from being mostly terrible games (that slot machine garbage was unbelievable) with awful additional characters (Genesis, etc. - Zack could be forgiven), they didn't flesh out the world in an entertaining way as far as I was concerned. I didn't finish Crisis Core though (I think I made it about 75% of the way through before getting bored), and I'm told its final act is something special. I should probably YouTube it to get the extra impact, I guess. I'm sure the ending had to be great based on all the positive comments it gets.

Retcon.? i don't see why we have to go to such extremes, AC is just a sequel anyways.

Nomura won't retcon his own work, but may ignore it.

If they ever make FFVII-2 then I would like them to ignore Advent Children's events, they don't have to retcon it, just don't mention anything that happened in that movie.

People are very quick to assume that this remake will be canon, or part of the current canon continuity.

We have no hints that this remake will overwrite the original game in the canon. In fact with Nomura's statements I would be inclined to believe it will be a "reimagining", but it won't belong to the official timeline.

I actually like Advent Children a lot. But I don't think Final Fantasy 7 needs further tie ins to Crisis Core or AC. It's its own complete experience.

They should simply not reference them. Part of the criticism of the whole "Compilation of FF7" was that they felt inclined to explain things that needed no explanation.

Advent Children was fine for what it was. You act as though FF7 wasn't super "dark" itself.

I'd be best if they ignored them.

But it's directed by Nomura, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be FFVII made in the style of Advent Children

Crisis core is fine and should be given the fftype-0 work. Advent children is 50/50 on my view.

Dirge of Cerberus should be non-canon.

It's E3. Please don't post quick reaction threads like "Wow Sony just won E3!", "Where's Rare's game???", "How will the other conferences match Ubisoft's?!?!", "Wow every game had playable female characters", "Was GAF's hype for Fallout premature?", and other threads that are basically quick reactions you wrote up just a few minutes after seeing something on a conference or reading something on GAF. During E3 lots of news and announcements are breaking and it can be hard to keep track of it all. Low content reaction threads make it hard for users to find what they're looking for, and because passions are running hot they also tend to lead to messes. If you just wanted to make a quick comment, try to make it in reply to the relevant thread. If you still believe this requires a thread, polish it up a bit and re-post when stuff cools down no earlier than Friday. Thanks. You can check this policy post for more information.
