Should the XMB be ditched or kept for PS4?

I wouldn't mind if they kept the style with just some tweaks to give that next-gen feeling.

But keep it simple and minimalistic. No ads! I love the menu and how well it goes in my gaming space.

My biggest hope is, that they keep it as stylish and minimalistic as XMB. No huge images like in the Store. The usability should be more important, than a bucketful of colorful pics that are just in the way.

If it's going to look like that Vita UI, that's pretty disappointing. Although it really hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the Vita. Still better than the horse shit smeared on the screen 360 UI.

Hopefully they keep a smilar broad horizontal/sub vertical approach, but swap everything else for the Vita's liveareas, tiles and notifications. So...essentially the Vita OS, organised with XMB.

I'm very surprised there's so much Vita OS hate. I'd say it's the best available on any console. Mind explaining what's wrong?
I don't hate it...but my setup is very minimalistic and I have about 8 screens to scroll through...I'd much rather have everything in 1-3 screens with folders and icons I want. Also, a UI avatar I thought was a must for vita/PS4...

More customization on vita I think, is it's biggest flaw IMO, and I would really like to play around with my avatar as well...hopefully Sony is just waiting for PS4 to roll it out...

An XMB that looks like the Vidzone app would not be bad at all

That's not too bad. Put a clean background (classic waves or something) and we have a winner.

I would say keep it as the quick menu when you push the PS button and tweak it up. But this is a new system so a new UI is welcomed for the overall look of the menu system.

On the Vita: The UI is great for the system and they are starting to integrate all the apps so it's less of a phone style and more of a unique system. I think when the PS4 launches, we will see the new Vita UI. Most likely at E3 where they will talk about their plans to connect this with SEN being a focus.

Forced touch screen is the worst part about Vita. The touch screen isn't even that good on the Vita, and being forced to use it so often is fucking infuriating.

..... WTF? You can actually use pad and buttons to navigate in vita UI. and Vita's touch screen is great, even better than best of androids.

Kill it with fire I say. Has the charm of a spreadsheet.
But I am quite surprised how many people in this thread actually like it. So I guess, if the majority of gamers just wants only smaller improvements, they should keep it for god's sake.

Keep it but still improve upon it. As someone already mentioned, make browsing of games and videos be like pictures where you don't always have to scroll the items vertically. This is such a pain if you have a lot of titles and the one you need is at the bottom.

Im tired of it. They can come up with something new. The store was made for ps4 I have no doubt about that. It will obviously run better on new hardware.

New consoles = complete new UI to me. Would hate to see something "old" on next generation. That's part of the fun to me: explore everything anew!

It's pretty much what xbox is which everyone hates!

I think the only thing I really want sorted is the friends situation. Someone in the opening post mentioned it but it just feels so lifeless compared to Xbox. Now I'm not saying add avatars on anything it just needs 'something' that isn't Home

Revised.

It does need better management for videos. Vertical scrolling is messy for someone that has atleast 100gb worth of videos on my HDD, even with folders.

Keep it and put it on steroids
People dont the PSN store now but I think a mixture of XMB and the store might be good
So going to games would initially bring a menu similar to the store kinda like whats new does but the PSN store style in a fluid transition previewing the games you have, kinda like the preview you have of whats on the store but the XMB is just flipped vertically to the left side while in that category
Obviously you be able to launch the game or the game page
Like on Vita but also like PSN with DLC available shown etc
Pressing O will back you out to the XMB but in a fluid fast transition as quick as pressing the PS button for the XMB in-game but faster but you can also navigate via the vertical XMB if needed
That sort of layout could be good for Movies you have or music, data could be pulled from the net to fill in the blanks and info
But the main front would be like the XMB
Obviously PSN will be the same

I know that they won't keep the xmb, but I wish that they would. It's nearly perfect because it's so easy to find what you need. In comparison, the 360 and Vita's interfaces are a mess, and the 3DS and Wii's are passable until you have a lot of content.

nobody posted pics of the vita dash?

i dont have a vita. i guess this is it. learn to love it.

Touch allows for a grid of icons spread out like that. A more controller based approach might need to be more linear. Anyway, I don't expect that aspect of the vita OS to come across, but some of the live screen approach might, and the switching between app 'tabs'

1. You can use buttons with the vita UI.

2. I've owned an iphone 3, an iphone 4, an ipad, a 3rd gen ipad and now a Galaxy Note II. The vita has the most responsive touchscreen of all of those devices.

3. If/when sony drops the xmb I will be sad. It's simple and clean. The Vita OS isn't terrible but it's not wonderful... but if the new OS is anything like the new playstation store I may gouge my eyes out with rusty knives.

Keep XMB and improve it by put games and files in grid icons just like the old PSN store had. Maybe add folders too so you can label like RPG, Shooter, etc.

XMB is the perfect layout. They should only build from here:

- Enhanced folders
- Ability to customize position and organization of menu items (and even remove them)
- Even more customization of themes and skins
- Faster

Just doing the above would have been spectacular. But no, life is not fair, and people are stupid. So you'll get something with much larger font, giant icons, and slower performance.

Vita's OS is great, but it's great for a handheld with a touch screen.

Ditch it, there's no charm, no warmth there. Let Media Molecule have full reign on the OS UI, let them make a few different skins so people have a choice.

That's actually a good idea. I'd love it if you could view your ingame stats and guides, download wallpapers, themes, OST & add-ons by accessing the game icon.

It seems GAF really enjoys it browsing vertically trough endless items in the XMB.

Are people really that oblivious about the fact, that you can create folders (and label them) to group content in the XMB?

XMB has custom themes, that include new skins for icons. Personally, I don't need the UI to have charm or warmth, terms which remind me of Nintendo, I prefer the stylish and minimalistic UI design, that's been Sony's trademark for quite a while. Although Vita kinda breaks from it, and makes me a bit worried about the PS4 UI.

I would like to see an evolution of it in some form. I think XMB works well but it could organise a few things better. If my autistic brother can navigate the XMB as well as I can, then they're doing something right.

If it stays

-please make it faster.., i.e no (zero, nada) spinning icons while things load up anywhere.
-please make it easier to create and move things into user defined folders structures.

If it is being replaced it should offer the net functionality expressed above.

a practical robust voice interface would be a nice to have, but only if it is practical and robust to real world living room. "PS4 - play Killzone 4 "

I came to say ditched, but after hearing the Vita UI guy is designing the new one, please keep it!

It was already said, but Vita-Designer is the same as PS3-Designer. So nothing is set in stone. :-)

Shuji Hiramatsu is the man. ;-)

I just wonder which direction he'll go.

It was definitely faster before for me. I dunno if it changed because I have now tons of stuff on my HDD, or because they decreased the UI's memory imprint. But yeah, that's annoying.

Moving things into folders is easy enough, but awkward when you have larger amount of files you want to move. Being able to select more than one file for transfer would remedy that.

Ditch it or if they keep it, let me remove things from it like the Home icon, the photo and music tabs... Etc. let me customize it so it doesn't get bloated.
