Should Valve make Counter Strike:GO free to play?

No. Absolutely not. F2P model does not work for all games, and CS is one of those it does not work for.

However, despite loving the game, it really doesn't need to exist, and there's no incentive to switch over from Source. I mean, thousands of people still play 1.6, that right there should have told them this was a bad idea.

They should have made a full-on sequel instead of an "update".

I think people are forgetting how source's launch went. It was in more of a beta state then Go. You didn't even have all the character models out for both sides for the longest time. It also brought even less then GO to the table. It took time for valve to release official maps and skins for source, and for the modding community to take control, and its the same thing for GO. I'm not sure what people are expecting with a "full sequel" complaint about GO, its added the most to counter-strike then anything in the last decade. New counter-strikes work in a similar manner to new versions of fighting games.

Steam sales.

CS 1.6 and Source have had years, decades to expand their player base.

CS:GO has had...wait for it...almost two months.

Give it some time, but especially get some sales. Most CS players aren't going to switch over immediately, why would they pay full price for nearly the same game? I'm sure they can wait.

This F2P thing is ridiculous though, bordering on pure stupidity.

The active Counter-Strike playerbase in general is in decline. GO itself only goes down from here.

They should have made CS:GO... You know... A sequel to 1.6

Instead of just screwing around with these half ass reimaginings

You can make it prettier

Make the animations better

Make new maps and guns

Just stop with the awful movement and firing mechanics

I own the game and can't bring myself to play it because it isn't much fun

Absolutely not, the game is fine the way it is. I don't really get the hate for it either. I've had more fun with this iteration of CS than I have 1.6 or Source.

I'd probably stop playing it if the game went free-2-play, just like I did with TF2.

I think they needed to have many varring types of matched. I bought it at launch played it for a week and stopped. Way to quick for the matches and no real incentive to keep progressing. Say what you want but that the draw for alot of these games like COD. I want to progress to a higher level and feel like I earned something..

Getting better and winning should be the fucking incentive.

I'd be curious to see how the work was split between Hidden Path and Valve. I feel like Valve has zero interest in that game and that game saw the light of the day solely because Hidden wanted to do it.

I feel like GO is a game that shouldn't have existed or only on the console. It brings nothing new to the CS formula.

No, the game will be fine, its just obvious that it was pushed out early without being feature complete. Just like anything valve makes it'll go through bad patches and good ones, and end up being a phenomenal game.

wait CS GO is bad now?

Yeah, I've been wondering about this. I really like this new game quite a bit. I haven't had much time to play it lately, I felt it had a few problems, especially with weird lag spikes.

I guess I don't know much about the competitive scene for this game. And what they really want improved.

I don't really think that CS:GO was given typical Valve attention. They shuttled it off to Hidden Path, gave it almost no marketing, and now release game breaking patches for it. Compare it to the attention they give dota 2 and its night and day. I do think that it has a good core game underneath all the other stuff (although i still think there's not enough recoil when you move + shoot) but I don't think Valve has made a real effort on this title.

Oh really? You actually think this? After the Christmas sale I'll pm you with the concurrent numbers.
Why would we need those numbers?

"oh gosh, it went from it's pre-sale numbers of 10k to 14k after the sale."

2 months later

"annnnd it's back to 10k"

TF2 makes sense as F2P title because Valve can make revenue from the Mann Co. Store. CS:GO has no such equivalent, and as such, offers no revenue alternative from paying for the game.

Also if they made CS:GO F2P, imagine the response people would give to 1.6 and Source still costing money.

And CS:GO is getting more maps in the future.

I can see them making it F2P on PC, but due to cert fees and having to let some of the console makers take some of the cut for "distro costs", they'll never be F2P on those.
