Should Yooka wear pants?

MS Paint'ed the two together.

thanks, but I think the position of the eye is also an important differentiating factor.

Nah, he shouldn't.

There's a particular image that comes to mind that I can't post due to (Tame and artistic, but still) Anthropomorphic nudity:

Banjo's standing Dumbfounded while Yooka Streaks past him, totally starkers..

"Don't ya wanna put something on before ya go on an adventure? I got an extra pair o' shorts.."

"Nope, I'm good! Seeya, Ol' man!"

Can't say I'm a fan of the art style.

How about this? Didn't work for Bjork, but maybe Yooka can pull it off.

Now I'm just thinking of Bon Clay with that.

Wait, Yooka's a he?

I assumed it was a girl - the devs even mentioned that the design was "feminized" as it approached the version we have now.

Björk actually stole that idea from Bon Clay then, huh.

Nah, that artist made Yooka a he. I don't even know if a gender is known or if Yooka will simply be sexless.

Yooka's a he, Laylee's a she. It's on the Kickstarter in like the first paragraph.

Yooka is male, Laylee is female.

Our new heroes, Yooka (the green bloke with no pants) and Laylee (the wisecracking lady-bat with the big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie.

Ok, made a quick redesign. No clothes because I agree that it doesn't look right. I personally really like the chameleon eyes one.

I hope the link works because I can't get dropbox here. Edit: Rehosted, thanks!

Tweet them, the middle one should happen.

They can do better than a Sonic belly, and that's it.

Nah, no pants. It's BK 'in spirit' lol

Anyway, I expect reference to the fact that chameleons can change their skin. Heck, it's so well known that they can change colors that being a chameleon is a metaphor for changing to fit your environment. Of course they can also shed old skin like many reptiles. You can tell they're going for this with the subtle straps across the palm and the soles of his feet.

I think he'll literally change his skin like clothes. There's no much potential for charm here, it's crazy (being literally scared out of his skin, losing his skin to underwear like when Koopas lose their shells, other characters commenting on his 'shortslessness', instead of Mumbo transformations, different suits like Mario but as skin...) The devs are really wacky (lol) so I'm sure we'll get stuff along those lines. There's a reason they chose a chameleon as one the main characters.

IMO, human clothes would just get in the way if that's what they're going for. (Also he's in pretty good company since Sonic is buck naked as well.)

Should Yooka wear pants?

No, nien, nyet, ne, non, ei, lo

Although I do love the photoshops here

Yeah, the 'shops are funny.
It just shows how much more potential he has WITHOUT pants.
Sometimes we underestimate the value of simplicity in design.

Playtonic:
Nyeh, heh, heh, heh...It's all going to plan.

Just alter him a little to like closer to my avatar pls

I'm with you on that one.

I don't see the issue. Why shouldn't people give their opinions on character designs just because they've only been revealed recently? That doesn't make any sense.

There was an interview where they talked about why Yooka doesn't have clothes. They tried several designs and it didn't work. Plus, the chameleon abilities work better without clothes.

Yeah, was just about to post that

Finally, why isn’t Yooka wearing any trousers?

Well, I tried gloves, shoes, a hoody, trousers, knee pads and even leg warmers(!) But he just looked wrong. Or maybe it was my bad art skills? Anyway, au-naturale was the way to go. Especially since he’s going to need to use those special camo powers.

They should give him a dick like Crazy Frog or Dr. Manhattan. Don't call attention to it, just put it out there and let people deal with it. Stretch goal maybe?

Only issue with no clothes is that the obligatory transformations won't have funny clothes ;_;

Washing machine B-K transformation was the best.

Congressman, could you do another that's like the middle one but with the original eyes?

(not being sarcastic this time)

edit: I think TheCongressman1 may be on to something with that belly.

Sorry I wasn't quick enough of the draw.

But yeah, I think the belly is what would make him look more cohesive. He needs a little more weight at the bottom to balance him out.

I'm a big fan of what my friend calls the bean design method.

I don't think Yooka needs clothes, buy I definitely think he needs different proportions.

This is the best image I've seen so far. Not because he has Banjo's clothing, but because he just looks better.

Compared to the original:

A big problem I have with Yooka's design is that he looks unbalanced. His head and neck are huge and his body sort of does this upside down trapezoid thing.

The drawing fixes that by making his neck slimmer, and just having less of it, and by making his torso more like a curved rectangle than a trapezoid.

The drawing makes him look stronger and more agile. His hands and feet feel a little bigger, Mickey Mouse style. Along with the skinny arms, it makes him seem young and gangly, but also strong. Like he'd be a good jumper or climber. His feet also look more firmly planted on the ground, making him feels more balanced.

The drawing also fixes his face up a little bit. The head and the mouth have more character and are better defined, basically by being rounder, and the little concave part of his mouth helps him keep the reptilian feeling.

His tail also looks stronger with the thicker base and the smaller coil.

So even without the clothing, this is a better interpretation of the design, and I hope Playtonic are willing to make some changes to Yooka's proportions.

The problem is that it's not really the current 'style' to have bigger feet and hands. It's more of a 90s - mid 2000s thing. While I think it looks much better, it seems way more 'trendy' to have a bigger head, body and smaller hands, feet, etc. I find it really odd and out of proportion, personally

We have like 20 pages of discussion on this in the Yooka-Laylee thread, lol.

He's fine the way he is. Maybe the game will have optional clothing though; maybe you can unlock some clothing options. Would make the people against nudity happy, yes? Someone made an image of him with a Hawaii shirt, and it looked pretty nice.

EDIT: This one

Fuck yeah! I love Hawaiian shirts. This one x100

I don't know. I don't really feel like there is a current style when it comes to characters like these. Since most games have human characters now, I'm having a hard time thinking of examples.

And besides, I doubt Playtonic is putting much consideration into what's "trendy", because if they were they wouldn't be making this game in the first place.

So since Playtonic's tweets make it sound like they've been following what people have been talking about, I'll just say that I hope you guys take these things into consideration and further develop Yooka and Laylee's designs.
