Shovel Knight – amiibo Reveal Trailer

First reaction: Oh that's neat, Nintendo allowing an indie to make an official Amiibo
Second reaction: WAIT! Co-op is locked behind it, fack
I wouldn't have played co-op with it, but that seems disappointing

The mode was created specifically for people who buy amiibo. Without amiibo, this wouldn't even exist.

The battletoads stage was created specifically for people who buy xbox. Without xbox, this wouldn't even exist.
The god of war boss was created specifically for people who buy sony. Without sony, this wouldn't even exist.

doesn't work well for locked content, but saying that this amiibo is pretty cool.

Pre-orders beg...Sold Out.

Is the amiibo situation really still like this in NA?

Like, the first couple waves were a bit iffy here in Australia, but it's all good now.

The Animal Crossing line, final Smash characters and 8 bit Mario's have been up for preorder here since they were announced at E3, and the last couple waves have been consistently stocked since release. Ness, Lucina etc are still available online at EB Games for instance.

Yoshi is Yoshi. There's a Mario series because Mario is huge and each character has compatibility in multiple games, Yoshi got a new one because it's tied with a new game they are releasing. 2 SK amiibo seem unnecessary
There's Yoshi, Yoshi, Yoshi, Yoshi, Yoshi, and Jumbo Yoshi. Get out of here.

Then why not just put it on the eShop for $12.99? The Amiibo is still going to sell regardless. I think Amiibos can be cool when they basically just unlock cosmetics and visual flair across different games pertaining to that character. This is just DLC stripped of its convenience.

This is a render from the upcoming products part of YCG's merchandise section.

The right one is clearly the Shovel Knight amiibo. If that trend were to continue, the left character is getting one as well. Who is that?

That's Hex Heroes

I was thinking it was also likely that nintendo put in the requirement that the amiibo does something in game in exchange for the manufacturing and licensing costs, in order to ensure there was a base demand for it.

They could have just made a new armor set with a special ability.

It is where I live. If you don;t pre-order instantly or show up before the stores open you're not getting anything but Peach, Mario, Bowser, Luigi, Pikachu, Yoshi, or Zelda.

I hope you guys get your pre orders in and arrive at the store 30 minutes before opening so that you can play Shovel Knight in co-op. :^)

The amiibo is lovely, but I don't like that co-op is behind it. If they did that a CPU player was unlocked in a freely available co-op mode (like Yoshi), no problem. The same with challenges on both platforms. Since it seems the amiibo is a YCG's initiative where Nintendo just supports them for production, thus they made the decision about the content, not Nintendo. Good that it'll be supported by future SK games, dat long-lasting relationship.

Also, yeah, GameGrumps was unexpected and a bit funny at times. Still, given what said earlier, YCG made the trailer as well (just by looking at the ending, I'd say XD )

the retro 3 pack at GS lasted for days in store and at least a day or two online

the numbers seen at Target are pretty good and comparable to the super common Pac-Man from the May wave.

things are a lot better. not perfect, but definitely better.

It's better now, way way better. Maybe not to everyone's taste of course.

I've definitely heard that the show's back at 100%; you could smell the awkwardness in those first few Danny episodes. But Jon left before my senior year of undergrad; I had a huge, 80-page thesis to write that year. I figured that, regardless of whether or not the show could grow back into its own, I didn't have the time to keep up with it, and I've only gotten busier from there.

I liked the few episodes I've seen, however. I just don't know if I want to trudge through the archives at this point. Again, though, it's cool that the Grumps got involved with this! They kept getting mentioned on those surveys Nintendo did, and Arin was at the NWC (I still need to see that), so I definitely see Nintendo doing more with them in the future.

yes

can't get any of the ones I want at retail price anywhere

could bathe in a goddamn pool of Mario and Link amiibos if I wanted to though

Is this co-op online mode?

Pfft...LMAO! Of course it's not. What am I thinking? It's Nintendo.

Is this a thing now? Where we start blaming Nintendo when a third party (let alone a limited indie studio) can't manifest the budget for online multiplayer on their game?

Also, why the hell would co-op be locked behind an amiibo?!

People just love looking for reasons to be angry at amiibo, here's my 2cents.
SK launched as a full game like last year and it's getting a free expansion. This isn't launch on disc (download?) DLC locked behind an amiibo. If you want more shovel knight then the figure is for you.
Shortages? They've been quite a bit better. The 3 pack was super easy to get. It was available for several days and keeps popping up online.

A little disappointed that such huge features are locked behind it, but that is one handsome amiibo. I'll definitely be getting one.

It's Yacht Club games. And doing online co-op is significantly more difficult and expensive.

It is a huge feature indeed, much more huge than every other "exclusive" content in other versions of this game. Perhaps it only exists because of this amiibo.

So YCG selling this amiibo? It will be interesting to see of they handle this better than Nintendo America. Can't complain about Nintendo Europe, meanwhile most amiibos are perfectly buyable here.

Man, as an ex-Game Grumps fan that was really unfunny and cringey. I chuckled at the old Arin and Jon T-Shirt ads but to see the humor in this...

Also, really sucks that co-op is locked behind a toy. Nintendo is getting really greedy about these things.

And kind of expected the Shovel Knight amiibo isn't Smash related, pose looks too boring to be a Smash amiibo.

I just don't think Amiibo should be used as a primary means of distributing substantial DLC. It offers me nothing over just throwing it up on the eShop besides several days of shipping and miniature figures that watch me sleep at night.

Every other version got exclusive content for free.

Eh...this is probably the worst of their ads that I've seen, to be fair.

I don't dislike DLC.
I dislike DLC, digital content, that I may wish to play, being locked behind plastic trinkets and artificially inflate the entry price. It benefits nobody, least of all fans of the game.

Aside from Splatoon and maybe this, all amiibo content was developed solely due to amiibo and wouldn't exist without it.

I fail to see how this is "greedy", especially when this is more Yacht Club than Nintendo.

I was really excited until I saw what features are going to be locked behind it. I can't wait to pay $30+ for a second-hand version of this fucking thing from a scalper.

Import from Europe, Australia or Japan. We have no amiibo issues anymore

Funny video, cool amiibo. But locking coop behind it? Really? This feature should be on every system. It's not like Kratos and Battletoads which are exclusive due to IP ownership. This is just because... Nintendo let them make an amiibo?

I guess Jontron is doing a video with Nintendo anyday now.

Jontron doing a video, good one.

Yay for Shovel Knight merch. Boo for exclusive content tied behind the Amiibo. (I dislike the concept for all games that use it, MP10, MK8 and Splatoon included.)

What would be cook is if Shovel Knight amiibo unlocked the shovel from ALttP in Hyrule Warriors

I usually enjoy watching their commercials, but I'll agree, something was off with this one.

I Burgie Burgie was great. This one was awful. It ran too long without something genuinely funny happening and just felt awkward and long.
