Shows you love, but would never defend as good

True Blood was my "damn I love this embarrassing goofy ass show" for its first 4 seasons. After that it got legit horrible, but it was a perfect guilty pleasure for the first half of its run

I love Tim and Eric, Steve Brule, On Cinema, T&E Nite Live, Bed Time Stories, etc, but I could never defend it as "good" because if you don't get it you don't get it. I feel like a lot of people who dislike it still think they get it but they still don't see all the levels. But you can't tell people that without sounding like an asshole. It's hard to explain even the technical film making ways it's brilliant.

It speaks to you or it doesn't. It's the same with the podcast Hollywood Handbook.

That said, T&E and Absolutely have been majorly influential on comedy, for better AND for worse, and you can't deny that.

I also enjoy some other Adult Swim shows, like Aqua Teens, Eagleheart and Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, but even I don't think of them as "brilliant." Just a special kind if dumb that I find hilarious.

However, some Absolutely programs, Like Jon Benjamin Has A Van and Review, I will defend to the death.

Dark Matter and Firefly.

I wouldn't say I love Flash or Arrow, but I'm not going to stop watching either any time soon. Supernatural I do love, but I'm not going to defend it.

I used to defend Firefly. The last time I watched it I was like "oh... I can see why people don't like this..."

Stargate Atlantis thread?

The show was not good by any standard metric. Poor writing. Mediocre characters. But man was that show just campy fun. I really enjoyed it.

oh shit Khal Drogo, i liked Atlantis, it was better than Universe...

You take that back, boy!
Seriously, Universe is so much better than Atlantis ever was. It just didn't know how to properly escape the Shlockverse of Atlantis. The first season of Atlantis was solid, but then it just... oh my god it made Voyager look like the most exciting piece of television ever, and both shows are "resets 'r us".

also: what's bad about Space: Above and Beyond? For a late 90s show that's about as good as it could get. Sure, it's wonky, but everything was wonky back then(particularly the fact that they didn't share the measurement units of distances in space with other writers, so every episode, someone uses a difference measure of distance leading to some really funny effects. Or: how competent is the writer? Look for their understanding of scale! Only the last episodes switch to the proper norm of AU, or Astronomical Units as any kind of way to understand distances between planets).

There's a huge amount of time and changes between that one and say, the BSG reboot.

Also: once upon a time I had a lot of free time, and watched the entirety... of Charmed, a show that is godawful beyond S2 but I watched it anyway.

Maybe MLP: Friendship is Magic? I feel it's a great show within its own narrow category, but a great show, period? Not so sure.

Lol I'm sitting down to watch last week's The Strain as I enter this thread. My answer as well. The show is pretty friggin stupid but it's fun to watch, I look forward to it.

I used to like the alien TV show Roswell. Pretty sure it was fucking terrible as most of em never worked again, but I tuned I'm every week. The main girl is pretty great on the unreal show

The Blacklist - that show exists only to watch James Spader shoot motherfuckers in the face while being James Spader as hell. I love it.

Stargate Atlantis had Kahl Drogo team up with a Power ranger to fight a knockoff terminator. It had its moments of being legitimately good.

Especially The storm/the eye 2 part episode in season 1. Those episodes are legitimately good TV. It's just a shame that the rotting corpse that was SG1 S9/10 kept jumping to Atlantis and making it worse

I binged Firefly on Netflix as I was trying cover any sci-fi series I hadn't seen that had a cult following. I finished it only because I am stubborn. It truly is the most Overrated show in the genre. I mean Dr. Who fans might be the worst fanbase (in sci-fi.... because Sonic fans are the worst overall), but at lease Dr. Who has some legitimately good episodes now and then.

People rate it on potential, which it had tons of. Mostly because it had so few episodes it wasn't yet given the chance to suck. I agree it is overrated because of that, but it still could have been a great show if it continued. It just as easily could have turned into drawn out garbage though. What we got was a promising start.

Anyway, for me it would be Highlander. I loved the fuck out of that show, but even when I was into it I knew it was schlock.

"Surface."

It was a crappy show that got cancelled pretty quick. But I watched every episode with my dad and it is just nostalgic for me.

Oh, that's another good one: classic Doctor Who. As someone who's been watching the show since early childhood and has pretty much the entire classic series on DVD, boy is there a lot of trash in there. Just tons of dull stuff, hammy stuff, nonsensical stuff and everything in-between.

Heaps of great stuff too, but yeah. Couldn't fault a modern viewer for totally not getting the appeal.

I really like parts of Kill La Kill but I don't think I could in good conscience recommend it to most people because it just goes way too far with stuff like a character getting molested on camera and super unnecessary rape jokes.

Maury.

It's such trash TV and there are only 3 variations to the episodes (Paternity/Cheating/I was derpy, but Look at me now!) But it NEVER fails to deliver hilarious moments.

Anything from the Tim & Eric wheelhouse except Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories. Their entire output is indefensibly awful (In a beautiful way), but Bedtime Stories was just bad.

Not so much "love", but I often watch shonen anime past the point where many say they get bad. Naruto, Bleach, and especially Fairy Tail

Baki The Grappler

My greatest guilty pleasure in anime. It is one of the most enertaining martial arts anime ever, but I realize the appeal for this series is niche lol.

I mean, just look at this:

That tells you everything you need to know.
Everything about the manga and the show I just can't watch.

It has to be the most offputting art style I've ever seen and the mangaka has been doing Baki for so fucking long now.

Plus it comes across like a power fantasy pills dream for the mangaka.
