Sierra Classic Adventures to be Rereleased?

The KQ collection is as good as mine. I've never played an SQ or PQ game, though. Are they any good? I also echo the desire for a DS version of any of the KQ games.

I only played the first two Space Quest games (beat 1, got stuck near the end of 2), and they were just as fun as the KQ games to me (but I've only played KQ1-4).

I keep a Win98 partition just for Sierra titles (Gabriel Knight being my all-time favorite series EVAR).

If they DID bring out the GK collection again - with XP compatibility and fixed all the timing issues (so I don't have to use a program to slow down my computer) I'll just have to pick it up again!! This coming from a guy who bought all the games seperately.. Then the collection just so I could get the GK3 graphic novel before GK3 came out.

Noooooo! The KQ collector's series is going for about 90+ on Ebay... and I was gonna find all 3 discs and hawk 'em...

Good news otherwise.

i've had no problems running gk1 or gk2

I just checked ebay and found that the King's Quest Collection has both Laura Bow games (Colonel's Bequest and Dagger of Amon Ra). I preferred those two games to the entire King's Quest set (and everything else Sierra did). They are both probably in my top 10 favorite games of all time. Laura Bow +1.

I think I love you man!!

Especially the installer that will let me put GK2 on a single DVD. :) :)

Guess I missed this with my lack of being on the Sierra GK message board. Used to be a regular on that before and after GK3.. Now GK3 speculation were fun times back in the day.. How much stuff they hid in pictures that you could find using proper filters.

This is awesome. You know, maybe it is about time we had a tree adventure revivial, just as we had an PC RPG revival a few years back. It seems that the market is ripe for it, people are FINALLY getting sick of endless FPS and racing games.

I sure would love to see a real AL Lowe developed Larry game. (Magma Cum Laude is a piece of shit).

I just want Jane Jensen to create Gabriel Knight 4..

3's ending was begging for a sequel... Grace wasn't going to be in part 4, she was going to return in 5.. Jane had a lot of the character development planned out.

(Found this on Adventure Gamers.)

Amazon.com has listings for upcoming compilations of the four most popular Sierra classic adventure series: King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, and Police Quest.

They will apparently be available on October 11 for $19.99 each.

Oh, and unlike the previous versions of these games, the new compilations are apparently Windows XP-compatible.

Anyone know anything about this?

If you're fucking with me, so help me God...

Don't go after me; you want Amazon.com and the person on Adventure Forums who discovered this.

I put multiple qualifiers in my post.

The KQ and SQ series easily fall in the top 10 PC series of all-time in my opinion.

maybe there's a problem with the rights to "hero's quest/quest for glory". didn't a couple (husband and wife) own the rights to that?

heros quest
space quest
police quest
larry
kings quest

thats how i rank em.

I already have all these compilations from the last time Sierra released them, but I'm willing to pay for them again if they work with no issues in XP.

Ditto. I think the only compilation I don't have is Police Quest, and getting them to run on my XP box is...a pain. I don't even try anymore. I do have an old 486 that I'd planned on shoving into a lighter case (home-made or eBay) to play them, but this may change my plans.

I hate to be a graphics whore, but it would be nice to see a graphical update.

Sacrilege. When Sierra did VGA updates to Space Quest 1 and Leisure Suit Larry 1 over ten years ago, people compared them to Ted Turner (which, in context, was a bad thing.)

Some prints of the first Quest for Glory game was in fact called Hero Quest - So You Want To Be a Hero? (or something vaguely similar.) I believe they got in trouble with the owners of that HeroQuest board game that used to exist around the same time (was something like a very simplified D&D, but on a board game.) I used to own it.

Lori and Cori Cole.... but I believe Sierra owns the rights to the 'Quest for Glory' name/series. I could be wrong, though.

Still own the board game and the original print of QFG1. :) I was just reminiscing over Hero Quest the other day...I can't wait to pass that game along to my kids.

Look, I know beggars can't be choosers here, but I'd love - down to the deepest cockles of my heart - an XP-compatible version of The Adventures of Willy Beamish.

You could always buy a Sega CD.

OK, guys, don't pretend to not be excited over the LSL re-release. :lol That was the holy grail when I was 12.

Eh, my parents let me play them by 10, so they never had a "vice" attached to them, so to speak.

But do pretend to hide your anger over recently paying insane amounts of money on eBay for used, difficult to get running properly on Windows XP copies of classic Sierra games.

At least the Police Quest series only cost me $30 and was new.

And if someone can explain to me why no parent I knew had any problem with their children playing Leisure Suit Larry games, I'd like to hear it.

why do I have a feeling that the copyrights are starting to expire for some of these and Sierra is simply making sure they are good for another few decades?

Well, they never really had it for Space Quest. The name was being used for some exhibit in some zoo some(where). Eventually, there was fine print in the game docs stating how the name was being licensed.

But whatever their reasons, I welcome the games. Especially now that I can (for the most part), kick the 486 to the side. Now I just need a recoded QfG pack, Willy Beamish, and some of the one-shots (e.g., Torin's Passage, Freddy Pharkas, etc.)

Highly unlikely. Copyrights for works made after 1978 last for the author's life plus seventy years. Even earlier works have been granted extended copyright protection. For example, Mickey Mouse is still copyrighted even though he was created well over 50 years ago.

sorry for the bump, but is there any more info on this? it's only a week away from the supposed release date and i'd buy these compilations in a heartbeat if they're only $20 and work on XP

Sorry for the bump, but a quick update on these things:

Amazon's applied a pre-order discount on all of the games, so if you're all kinds of hot for Sierra's old games and ordered them all like me, you can save about $8-$10 or so when all is said and done.

I am a bit concerned that we're only two days away from the release date and there's still no information on these things, though.

I was just thinking about these today. I so hope they exist. But with no announcement from VU Games I reckon they won't be coming out this week at least.

This made my day, I hope lucas arts does the same thing.

All I want from Lucas Arts is more X-wing and Tie Fighter titles. Someone get Christopher Walken saying that on SNL so we can have avatars depicting said request.

Now that that's out of the way onto my actually relevant statement

Larry was just amusing to me, I think I came across it at like 13 or so, the same time I found a copy of the old text adventure "Leather Goddesses of Phobos."

King's Quest I remember my dad playing as I watched. I'd probably replay that whole series, especially when they went from trying to be realistic with the series to the cartoon graphics of KQ VII.

Police Quest and Space Quest I'm unfortunately not familiar with

Then you're missing the best series. Space Quest is awesome. You NEED to play the whole series. Basically it's a space comedy kind of like Futurama with an idiot space janitor saving the galaxy.

Police Quest I never got into too much, though 4 was great, kind of like a game version of Law & Order (Yeah I know there official game versions of it now, but there weren't when PQ4 came out.) I could never get into the SWAT games though, they're basically not all that great RTSes but with a police theme as far as I can tell.

The larry games are not really that dirty. They are meant to be FUNNY over sexual.

The larry games are up and down. The original is a classic, and a pretty good adventure game. Larry 2 for some reason does away with the dirty stuff, and has a lot of repetetive and not very fun puzzles. Larry 3 is back in top form, and is my second favourite in the series. Really great puzzles, and original story, and a great game.Larry 5 is similar to larry 2 in that the puzzles are boring and repetetive, and fairly obscure all at the same time. not a very good adventure games, and not dirty enough to comepnsate.

Larry 6 is my personal favourite in the series. Great open ended design, fun unique grpahical style, fantastic voice acting all around, great logical puzzles, and the best humour in the entire series.

Larry 7 is a bit of a letdown, as it is kind of a retread of larry 6, larry is again in a resort (this time a cruise ship). There is still a a lot of great humour, but the extreme cartoon look (same as kings quest 7) made the women less fun to look at (for some reason having a cartoon larry amongst "realistic" women works better), and overall the game was a bit to consticting.

I'm still sore that there is no al lowe designed larry 8. But there still hope, Al has told me he would make larry in a a second if he was ever asked. www.allowe.com

King's Quest I remember my dad playing as I watched. I'd probably replay that whole series, especially when they went from trying to be realistic with the series to the cartoon graphics of KQ VII.

Never was much of a fan of king's quest, Roberta williams was a pioneer, so she deserves credit, but other too the advnture genre and improved upon it imensley. All of the kings quest game rely too much find something and give it to someone else. Also, in most of the games the puzzles dont make sense more often than not, so you are never quite sure what to do. She also tended to design big huge worlds consisiting of a lot of screens with nothing important on them, making navigation overly complex. She is also addicted to the dreaded maze. She does tend to borrow from fairly tales a LOT.

That said, king's quest 6 is an absolutely fantastic game! truly a gem that everyone should pay, and once again features superb voice acting, and great mark siebert composed music. King't quest 7 is ok, but to linear and seems more like a disney movie that a high adventure game.

Police Quest and Space Quest I'm unfortunately not familiar with

The police quest series has an interesting history. all of the games were designed by real ex-policemen, and therefore have an over reliance on following actual police procedure, which if you are not familaier with actual police procedure can be quite confusing. I am a big fan of police quest 1, despite a clumsy driving interface that must be used to pull people over. Police quest to kind of takes the same path as larry 2, and i didnt like it much. Police quest 3 again is a great game and worth playing.

Police quest 4 was designed by someone else entirely and has a completely different tone to it. there no real humour and it has a much darker story. Some of the imagry is truly shockign the first time you play. Think jeffery dahmer. A good game, but doesnt have the soul of the earlier games.

Space Quest is my favourite sierra series. The first to games are largeley similar and rather bland in comparison the the later games. they had humerous ideas (insurance salemen armies, etc, but a limit on actual humour. I'd say they are worht playing for hardcore adventure fans.

Space quest 3 is great. hilarious story, great parody (the first time parody was heavily used) a great musical score composed by Bob Siebenberg of supertramp. Make sure you have a good midi setup.

Space quest 4 was a good game, but not my favourite in the series, even though it is the creators favourite. It has a good fun time travel story, only you are travelling not through time, but through various space quest games, persued by the sequel police. It's fun when you go back to space quest 1 and the background is space quest 1 style graphics. Also of note because it featured hilariously BAD voice acting done by sierra staffers, unlike the top notch proffessionals used for kings quest 6 and larry 6. It also interestin to note that the floppy disk version of the game has a pardoy of radio shack called radio shock. Radio shack threatned legal action, so the cd version the store is called "Htz So Good". Funny that coporoations pay to have thier name in video games now, but back then they sured over it.

Space quest 5 is my personal favourite. Done alone by mark crowe, only 1 half of the two guys, it is almost all star trek parody. The othr half of the two guys, scott murphy, tended to inject a more eccletic mix of parody. Fantastic story, great music, fun, logical puzzles, excellent character development. all aroudn awesome game. curiously there is no version of this game with voice acting, which is a shame.

Space quest 6 is a bit of a mixed bag. It was designed almost entiely by Josh mandel, both scott murphy and mark crowe were not interested at the time in doing another space quest. Asa result is has a different sort of humour running throug it, similar to Freddy Pharkas (also primarily wirtten by josh mandel, despite al low getting top billing.) Somewhere along the line josh mandel was pulled of the project, and Scott Murphy took the reigns. This unfortuantely resulted in a lot of overly difficuly puzzles, josh mandel and planned to write clevcer clues into the game, and scott was not aware. one particular puzzle was mistaken for copy protection, but in reality sierra had ruished the game out the door and printed the clue for the puzzle in the manaul instead of programing them into the game. Despute its flaws it is still my thrid favourite in the series, after 5 and 3.

One thing that can be said about all the games in the series is that there is an obvkous line between games that where made by "family business" sierra, and "corporation" sierra. For space quest the line is between 5 and 6, for king's quest it is between 6 and seven, and for larry the line is a little blurrier, but the signs can be seen in larry 7. The eairlier games have a very personal quality, with a tonne of in jokes, and refernces the other sierra game, or specific sierra employees. Fr insatnce, sierra founder ken williams appears in every larry game (but i never saw an obvious reference in larry 7), the two guys from andormeda (soctt murphy and mark crowe, creators of space quest) are key characters in space quest 3. You get a real sense that these games were made by small teams of people who knew each other and were a labour of love. The later games have a more sterile experience, and you get the sense that there was a coproerte moron watching over saying "take that out".

Other must play games are the gabriel Knight games, the Laura Bow games, and Gold Rush. Unfortunately these games are impossible to find, even on abandonware websites, and likely wont be re-releases like the more popular "quest games".

I fucking miss adventure games.

No way Larry 7 ruled and those woman were hot back in the day. I hope these are not just dos box in a cd since they have canceled two big fan projects over these compilations.

KQ9 and Space Quest 3 Remake have both been served with desist orders and have stopped working on their projects. KQ9 had more then 2 years of labor into it, why they waited so long is abit of an insult to many.

No nothing yet. Amazon *still* has the release date listed for tomorrow, but the shipping page in my account says 18 Oct. Confusion reigns, unfortunately. I guess we'll all have to sit tight and see what happens.

Amazon now lists these as "New Arrivals" that ship in 1 to 2 weeks (which explains your cart weirdness, xsarien).

I feel kinda iffy about actually buying this until I hear something good about them or at the very least read a press release.

Was Vivendi actually aware of those fan projects for all that time? Or is it possible their legal guys only started looking around when they knew they were going to re-release the games?
