Silent Hill 5 EGM Coverstory Info

Virtually all of the hype I had for SH5 has dissipated thanks to this feature.

One of the enemies they showed is a complete ripoff of the "Closer" from SH3, only with a bunch of useless appendages attached to its body. It's a completely meaningless and vapid design choice - probably an act of desperation from an art designer who just doesn't "get" the ideas behind Silent Hill.

they can't be worse than the original Origins monsters :lol

True. They aren't that bad. Those look like wtf. These look like derivatives of SH monsters. Just, like, with more limbs and shit.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to know what significance this might play in the game's plot. It MUST be taken into account that things are going to be different, they've shown a total of 4 creature designs so far and you're writting off the entire art team already?

All the designs are subject to change of course.

Yeah, they're definitely not at SH:O-levels of suckage, but they're dissapointing nonetheless.

And at least the SH:O baddies were somewhat unique - the SH5 enemies are generic rehashes of prior games, with pointless elements like puss sacks added to them.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that one - the "Lying Creature" from SH2 was ripped off, as well, with the only difference being a bunch of puss sacks added to his upper torso.

I mean, the early Origins designs were laughable...

as long as they at least seem like they belong in the SH world, it's ok. These were like terrible fanfic bullshit.

Thankfully Origins went from those ^, to these:

You do not in any way know this to be true.

granted, the monsters do leave something to be desired... but yeah... I think they look great in the game. The final-build's lighting will be critical, but I love how tangible they all look thanks to the texture work.

Those E3 '07 pics almost seem like a last gen build compared to the EGM pics, IMO.

They've said that the lighting being used is going to be more dramatically impacted on the environment. Specifically, they mentioned shadows and silhouettes.

The graphics don't look different from those two shots we saw last month, Jolly. The character model is better, though. More detailed. The lighting is improved, but it could just be the scenery. It's still really marked by some low res texturing.

I still don't think they look terrible. But, like, they don't look amazing. And they certainly aren't to next-gen what SH2 was to last gen.

I don't think the shots look a gazillion times better, graphically, than the E3 shots. What I do think is that these shots do a much better job of actually showing the game. I'm liking what I see.

absolutely.

Call me a Team Silent fanboy but I still think it sucks this got outsourced. I hope that it is great, for all of our sakes. But it's going to be one of those I won't think much about until it shows up one day and people are talking about it before I really think about picking it up at full price.

*makes himself an eye-doctor appointment immediately* I guess I need to do this. :D

Nah, I understand why you think they look a lot better: the scans do show the game off MUCH better than the E3 shots. They really, really, do, no questions asked. TECHNICALLY they look roughly the same, but the shots being bigger and showing more, you can make out more details and it certainly looks better.

damn... the nurses look great!

I also like that the new 'Patient' creatures have two hands coming on both sides of their head, pulling the mouth open. Looks painful.

I don't really like that the Man/Woman thing has buckled boots (and some kind of metal vest?) on. I liked Ito's way of making the creatures just all flesh... and even clothes (like the nurses and Pyramid Head) looked like they were made from skin.

Hopefully The Collective has some good animators...

Phew, thank god they're going for something new like Silent Hill 2. The Silent Hill cult bullshit of 1 and 3 is boring.

Are you guys kidding me?!

The game looks amazing. A far cry from the first awful screens shown. Seriously it looks very good to me.

The enemies designs are great IMO. The nurses are very HOT, I mean they even have this strange romantic glow to them that really contrasts with dark atmosphere.

Has anyone noticed the new character looks like a younger Daniel Craig.

Anticipation back on high.

EDIT: Oh and Thanks Jolly :D

I didn't think it was boring, but I didn't really think they knew where they were going with it either. SH3 had a pretty ho-hum conclusion (great game though).

Along his travels, he will team up with a spunky upbeat girl named Ellen. It isn't known at this time if she will be playable or not but she seems to be a cross between SH2's Maria and SH3's Heather.

I can't say I'm looking forward to this game at all. It sounds horrible, and it's in the hands of a horrible dev. My most loved series in gaming has been given a death note. Very, very disappointed.

What's wrong with what you quoted?

Yamaoka hinted at a brand new IP during the epic 45 minute PLAY! interview recently.

Don't listen to HIM!!! He's selling used cars in Japan, while the rest of Team Silent was probably absorbed into the Rumble Roses team, while others defected to Namco to work on Beautiful Katamari.

So I saw the uh... you know, pictures of the... pictures. Game looks good, imo. Nurses have finally crossed the line from sort of suggestive to straight up Jenna Jameson in Night Watch Nurses and I'm not complaining.

Jolly, when you see those shots in direct feed, it's gonna be very similar to the other shots. I mean, those shots are only a month or so old and this is print. :D

I'm concerned, but given the turnaround Origins seems to have pulled I won't assume the worst yet.

I really hope the combat is satisfying. I'm all for making the player feel helpless, but previous games tended to equate helpless with robotic. A character that feels like a vehicle doesn't add to the fear factor, it just distances the player from the experience in my view. Don't confuse fear of confrontation with fear of slowly animated melee attacks that will fail to connect without perfect timing, and laboured evasive manoeuvres that most paraplegics could pull off more efficiently in real life.

The soldier angle makes me afraid Collective are heading too far down that Resident Evil path - making combat enjoyable by casting the protagonist as a trained fighter. Resident Evil was never scary, but it was robbed of its atmosphere in its finest game. This is Silent Hill, so give me an average person who can't aim a gun at long range targets; who freezes up with fear during combat; or even lacks offensive capability altogether and has to evade enemies. There is no reason that those limited skills should not feel intuitive and absorbing.

I want to see pictures.

SH5 needs to be very nice graphically, and considering how little intensive the game is by design on the CPU it shouldn't be a problem, unless they lack resources.

Had a look at the scans, and it doesn't look too bad I guess.

I'm not sure if copying the design of the nurses from the movie was a good idea. They looked much more interesting in the old game designs. The monsters in general look a bit over the top. Certainly lacking the impeccable artistry of Team Silent. But they aren't horrible either so I'm not terribly fussed.

Over all, my hype meter on this game is still at 0. I need to see lots more before I start considering that anyone but Team Silent can do this series justice.

Well the gameplay in the Silent Hill series has never been much to write home about. Team Silent were great with controlling the atmosphere of their games, though. I really doubt The Collective will meet Team Silent's standards in that aspect.

Oh well. What has the Project ZERO/Fatal Frame team been up to lately? :lol

I don't have the scans but I saw them and I LOVE the lighting for the game. I was skeptical at first but the lighting and the simplicity of the nurses and the sort of mannequin with the squid-like head is truely beautiful and scary to look at.

Guys, they might have something!

that one creature... the one that looks really tall and skinny, standing over the hospital gurney, (smaller pic on the last page) is really creepy. It looks like some grotesque marionette with a Joker smiley. If that thing chases you around in the dark... holy shit... @_@

don't play Siren unless you're a clinical masochist.

Siren is worth checking out but it does have some design flaws. There are numerous SH references that SH fans will love. But it is very unforgiving.

And I'd like to see these pictures too.

These two would be awesome for a Silent Hill:

I would love to imagine a new IP from the former Silent Hill team could be a game with this kind of world:

The problem with the art in SH5 is that it completely loses the point of the monsters in SH. While they're "monsters" they have a strange sort of beauty to them. They're almost all very sleek in design but still come across as creepy. This on the other hand is basically someone taking a bunch of ideas and trying to mash them all into 1 monster to create somethin that'll creep people out but it comes off as cheesy rather than creepy. Take for example the Siam monster, which is a blatant ripoff of Closers, although again with a bunch of shit added onto them to try to make it look creepy.

With that said, I don't get the complaints about the graphics. If those screens are real time then it looks fantastic. Especially the shot of the lead character holding an axe and and the camera behind some monsters legs. The lighting in that shot is stunning and far beyond what we saw in those E3 pics.
