For real?

I have no words.

For real?

I have no words.

Yep. I remember playing SH2 HD right before James fights the dual Pyramid Heads and thinking "one of Maria's eyes is a different color" during that scene where they gut her. When I went to make my comparison videos for YouTube, I slowed it down and it was fucking teeth in her eye. Unreal. I hadn't seen it anywhere before I saw it, so I was genuinely shocked.

Hijinx is the developer that made the HD Collection, they are of cause partially responsible as well. But primarily it's Konami for a) choosing a developer to make the port who apparently isn't capable of doing a proper port and b) releasing the game in such a horrible state

Both games have still problems after the patch, but the patch was a significant improvement.
The fog is improved and +- comparable to the PC version, voice sync issues are fixed, performance is at least in SH2 ok, ridiculous scenes like the the one with Maria in the park where you could see the end of the level is fixed and properly foggy and all in all, there's not much broken or completely terrible in SH2 anymore.
The boat scene is slightly better but still not very good and the strange changes like the darker road texture are unchanged.
SH2 HD could be better, but it's playable and ok in my opinion.
SH3 HD has unfortunately more problems. fps are in some few areas unstable (stays playable, but is noticeable slower), the depth of field effect is missing and issues with shadows so they look blocky.
Bearable and playable as well but in need of an additional patch to be on par with the PS2 version.

Hmm.. getting an HD copy still seems doubtful. I already have SH2, but not SH3 yet (or vice versa), so might as well get the other. I'm hoping they eventually change they're minds about the patch cancellation and fix everything up. This is such a terrible way to release an HD of two great games.

I'm still new to the SH series, so what order should I play the series? I was planning to do:
SH Origins -> SH1 -> SH2 -> SH3 -> etc

I'd like to try and play all the installments (maybe not Homecoming) so which ones are sequels and which ones are spinoffs?

Start with the first SH on PSOne. Play Origins later, as it takes some liberties with things that were established earlier on in the series, meaning before Origins was released.

Yeah tough decision. I don't regret that I bought the HD Collection (only after the patch). They are still great games and fun to play but I would only recommend them if you can live with shortcomings.

There is no particular order in that one should play the games. They are all pretty independent from each other with the exception of Silent Hill 1 and 3.
You could just play them in the order of release or without any order at all :D
I don't think any of the games counts as an actual spin-off.

I guess the game sold so bad it's not worth putting a patch since it will only bring more costs. It seems it's the customers fault again.

Just play SH1 through SH3 in order. Everything after that can be played whenever really.

SH4 is mostly a spinoff with some fan servicey bullshit in place of a real story so that it can connect with the series proper.

Origins is technically a prequel but it doesn't match up with SH1 well at all.

Shattered Memories is essentially a remake/reboot/re-imagining of the first three games in a completely different universe.

Homecoming and Downpour are stand alone sequels for the most part.

Continuity really doesn't mean much after the original 3. Some people have trouble playing SH1 because of the its age but you should really play it first.

SH: 0rigins, 1 and 3 are all related, and tell a self-contained story, and should ideally be played back to back. SH 2, 4, Homecoming and Downpour are standalone games (although SH4 makes references to SH2), and SH: Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of the original game, so those can be played in whatever order you want. There's a bunch of spinoffs too (SH: The Arcade, SH: Play Novel, SH: Book of Memories, SH: Orphan etc.), but those can just be ignored, really.

More like "don't play Origins until after you've played 1-4, and then only if you still need the SH itch scratched." Konami might say it's canon, but it's really just fanfic, and not particularly great fanfic at that.

I mean, it's a solid facsimile of the SH experience, but it can't hold a candle to the first 4 games. Yes, even The Room.

Say what you want about 0rigins' story, but it is definitely a much better game than SH4, which was mostly just a tedious, mediocre experience.

If you have bought the HD Collection for Xbox360 Konami offers a free game as a compensation for not getting the patch:
http://www.examiner.com/article/kon...-xbox-360-owners-of-silent-hill-hd-collection
Silent Hill HD for PS3 is on the list of available games as well :D

The article said

Customers who bought a new copy of the game before August 8th can email Konami’s costumer support with a receipt in order to get a free game from a list of selected Konami titles

I almost thought it meant email them before August 8. I'm like.. its past that date already, lol. Too bad I don't have that copy.. I'd like to get downpour or something

I work at a casino, and the Konami slot machines at my work are the biggest pieces of shit ever.

Took them nearly a year to get them stable, and not fault all the time.

Okay, can someone direct me to a thread about the PS2 emulation thing? Finally want to play these games, and I will not buy the HD collection. (Unless the PS3 one is decent enough?)

Oh, I have SH1 through PS+, how badly has that aged?

I get that they need some kind of proof that the game was purchased new in order to get the free game, but do people really keep all their receipts for that long? It came out in March.

At least they are compensating in some way.

I try to make a habit of keeping all of my receipts in case of being charged wrong, something weird comes up on my statements, tax purposes, or whatever the case may be. I figured it was a common practice?

Personally I think PS3 version feels fine with the latest patch. Not perfect but good enough.

As for SH1 I suggest you try it for a few minutes and if you can stand the graphix (edit: and TERRIBLE VA lol) then give it a go. It's a solid title beside the visuals. I still think SH1 might have best audio design in any horror game. Few tracks are friggin brutal.

No one answered before, was the fog fixed on PS3?
Is it still not worth buying if the fog was fixed?

edit: nvm, my question was addressed in the last page.
Looks like a decent amount of improvements though, would I still be that bad off buying the PS3 HD collection for my first playthrough?

It's still not a perfect port but good enough to be enjoyable.
If you have never played the games before and can live with some shortcomings I wouldn't advice against buying the HD Collection :)

I'm sort of in the same boat. I'd really like to buy the HD as well.. but I already have one of the two on PS2 and don't know if I should just buy the other copy rather than HD. It sounds bearable enough to play in HD, I just don't know how bad it'll ruin the experience though, so that's what's keeping me back. I'd like to experience that eerie atmosphere throughout both games without any technical issues bad enough to ruin the moment

EDIT:

Kind of a dumb question: Any tips on playing SH? I'm just about to start. Should I stay away from guides?

Well it's not like the patch will fix the game, what with the original source code mysteriously missing. They're fixing what will always be broken now!

That's a tough decision. If you already have SH2 I'm not sure if I would recommend the HD Collection just for SH3 since it's the one with more issues.
And it's in the end a question of how liberal you are with flaws. Some are probably only issues if you have played the games before. I played SH3 a lot and was disappointed with the missing depths of field effect. And it's certainly not great, but to be fair, it doesn't ruin the experience. It still looks nice and for someone who has never played the game before, you probably won't even bother.
The blocky shadow problem, although not not that frequent are pretty noticeable. For me it was possible to overlock but for others it might be more annoying.
Not easy to make a proper recommendation in your case.
If you would buy the HD Collection for both games I would rather say it might be worth to give it a try. Just for SH3 alone maybe the PS2 version or PC instead.
(sry, not so much helpful I guess ^^)

The game has multiple endings and I think the first time is always the best to just play the game and enjoy it without a guide telling you what you should keep in mind and how to play etc.

For the most part, everything seems mostly bearable. I feel that the blocky shadow is overlookable for me, I've seen a video where shooting a weapon makes that messy noise which might bother me but only slightly. That and the ugly boat ride in SH2, which is only for a small moment so it's ok.
I can't even recall which SH I have, since my game is at my dorm. If I have SH3, then I will most likely get the HD. If I have SH2, then my decision is 50/50 unless I can find a cheap SH.

Indecisive!

Funny that they still have copies of all those Xbox and PS2 games around.
Which would be better to get? Metal Gear Solid HD or Downpour? I still haven't opened my copy of SHHD, and was actually talking with best buy about returning for store credit yesterday.

MGS HD collection, you will be amazed.

MGS3 in HD with 60FPS

I e-mailed them along with a photo of my receipt, let's see what they have to say and whether they will send me anything

It still isn't worth it to buy the HD version regardless of how much the technical issues bother you. The people who did the port made artistic changes to the source material. The sound design in SH3 is entirely fucked up. The new voices in SH3 completely change the tone as well and Heather's original performance is the crux of the entire game.

That was all done by Tomm Hulett.

I know the voicework nonsense was but the decision to completely rearrange musical tracks and inserting baby cries along with them is unclear. I certainly wouldn't put it past him considering his desire to appeal to the Halo crowd and his general incompetence.

It begs the question of why a company would make an HD port of games they do not have the source code for.

They had the source code for Silent Hill 2 & 3, it just turned out that it was sourcecodes for beta versions of the game.

Usually, most competent developers that make HD collections (Bluepoint Games for an example) just reverse engineer the games instead of using the source code.

Can anyone point me to the best resource for playing the PC versions? All details on playing that in HD, potentially useful mods, etc?

Ive got a PC hooked up to an HDTV with a gamepad, so Konami can kiss my ass on buying this HD collection.

Has anyone here e-mailed them and got a response to pick out a game?? I e-mailed last week and have received no response. Sent an e-mail with a picture of the receipt and nothing
