Silent Hill Homecoming - 47 screens

The review points to a difficulty of scarce items and enemies with hard attack damage. And a plot that takes its time to set-up. Sounds like Silent Hill to me! Day One!

Gamespy's preview of the game is the only overtly positive write up the game has received recently (to their credit, as with any good modern preview, they did include criticisms--namely of the camera and the framerate). Sure, IGN made some positive comments as did 1UP's GianCarlo Varinini, but both seemed to claim only that the only thing the game truly had going for it was the classic Silent Hill terror fans have come to expect.

I hope OXM's review is not an indication of the game's quality ultimately. I was hoping for a good horror game this Fall. My craving was only amplified when my anticipation for Alone in the Dark dissolved into disappointment as critics basically wrote it off as trash (and after playing through the demo multiple times, I will agree: control-wise, it is a mess). Let's hope the reviewer was just someone that typically does not enjoy slower paced, not-as-action-oriented, atmospheric games.

Hmm I didn't really see anything that I would consider a spoiler if you've been following the game...are you guys talking about
pyramid head, Travis, that guy getting smooshed lol
?

WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! That better not be true. *checks video regardless of spoiler*

EDIT: I thought those 3 things you mentioned are related but I guess not. *relieved*

EDIT 2: Game looks good in some parts and not-so-good in others.

None of the previous games reviewed well. Personally I don't pay any attention what so ever on scores, but especially when it comes to Silent Hill scores.

Have any of the previews done comparisons between the 360 and ps3 versions? I'd been hearing that PS3 was lead SKU, but am not sure, and have heard nothing otherwise about the relative performance on either platform. They look about the same from what I've seen, but this game has a weird tendency to look completely different to me every time a new batch of screens drop.

Well apparently the PS3 SKU was the lead. Shocking.

Its the one they´ve been showing to the media. But Im sure both will look and run the same.

Both Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 reviewed very well when they were released. Both received between 8-10/10. I know some places started knocking down points on Silent Hill 2's ports, but that's still a problem to this day. I still have a few magazines sitting around with reviews for the first, and they are praising it through out.

Review from OXM: (We're allowed to post these right?)

"Very good things come to those who wait, bludgeon, and patiently endure the sixth chapter in the Silent Hill series. But right from its plodding start Homecoming's stab in the soupy fog does itself no favors by committing a number of grievous sins. From its leaden, cheap-shots-aplenty combat to its wild-goose chase through gray, same-y hallways filled with useless, placebo doorways to a story that takes much to long to get off the ground, its entire first half feels like a death march through a clunky hot mess. Yes, we get that we're Alex Shepherd, a discharged soldier hot on the trail of his mising brother. In his path is a spaced-out mom and his mysteriously deserted hometown of Shepherd's Glen - a town with the motto "Where family comes first" rather than the more appropriate "Where broken locks and respawning enemies come first.". And we appreciate that there's something bigger and more sinister going on behind the occult-happy scenes that somehow involves the dark neighboring city of Silent Hill."

"But Homecoming puts all the intrigue and genuine spooks on hold until its second half, which genuinely ramps up the creep factor. And thankfully, by then, you may have gotten a grasp on the games revamped combat scheme - one that forces you to avoid as much conflict as possible due to quick enemy patterns and a somewhat slow-to-respond dodging/counterattack mechanic that usually ends in your taking cheap hits galore. Put those fights in cramped corners with a protagonist that controls to much like circa 2000, Lara Croft-ian tank, and we've suddenly got the urge to punch our TV set in low-hanging you know whats."

"But the good... no, great news is that Homecomings second half saves its bloodied bacon by more thoughtfully pacing out enemy encounters, giving you more than just one health drink and one box of pistol rounds to survive, and cranking up the foreboding atmosphere to breaking point. Once this happens, you'll immediately know - and from that moment on, it's a tense, bloodcurdling trip to tear the curtains off of Alex's unhappy, plot-twisty ride into hell. Sure your enjoyment relies heavily on whether you guess the story's big end reveal in the first 30 minutes (we didn't), but Homecomings half-hidden, melancholy little heart is shown only to those who look past its incredibly M-rated gory kicks and often frustratingly lopsided, questionably balanced exterior."

I hope this is not what I think it is.....
Jacob's Ladder ending?
. Would they make it this obvious?

When's it due? I'm well and truly hyped for this game.

I'm going to hammer on it extensively this weekend, I'm doing a bunch of Photoshop designs for the headers and such at the moment as well as compiling information. It should be ready by the middle of next week and then I'll get an okay from a mod as to when to throw it up.

1 week before release is the "rule" so tuesday. I'd not have " the official .." in the title, it's used way too much here :|

Apparently my Gamestop has a lot of preorders for this game. I went to pay it off along with every other game I have preordered for this fall, and the guy said "wow this game has a lot of preorders" or something like that. I was pleasantly surprised.

I've been quite concerned about that myself. I mean, they've stated in an interview that the movie was an inspiration (it was obvously an inspiration for the original team as well) which suggests that they wouldn't straight up duplicate it, but I'm still worried about it. That would be quite a disappointment.

EBGAMES is having free overnight shipping for this game for the next 10 hours. I want to get it but i dont know which version to get. I usually get the 360 version cause that has proved the best most times, but now people are saying the ps3 version is lead or something. Ughh.

thanks for the heads-up!

Haven't decided which version to get yet. PS3 perhaps? I try to alternate on multiplatform games. I actually think this game will be pretty good.

Anyone know anything about the PC version? System specs, release date, half-ass port, etc? All the official site has is a link to Steam, but you'd think Steam would have put it up on Coming Soon or a pre-order link by now.

Man, I'm pumped for this game, but I hope the PC version isn't a rush job.

I decided to go with the 360 version since the gametrailers previews are all done on that version and they look as good as ive seen the game so, whatever.

Excellent.

It seems as though the Australian release date is November. I'm going to have to import... Now I just need to find out what versions, if any, are region free.

The rumor is that it is getting pushed back to a Q2 2009 release in Europe (at least in Germany). Don't know if that includes other PAL territories like Australia.

An email some dude from sh5.net got:

Dear customer,

Thank you very much for contacting the Konami customer support team.
Silent Hill Homecoming was postponed. It's unfortunately not being released
this year anymore, we are aiming for Q2 2009.

Your Konami Support Team

The release date on amazon.co.uk even now says "This item will be released on December 26, 2008."

I might just import the PS3 version.

The game better be region free in one of the territories or my nerd rage will be legendary.

Bad news.

What? Are you kidding me?

I was in the right mood to get SH5 this season. I won't give 2 shits about it in Q2 2009!

Retarded delaygeneration. I wish they start announcing games when they're already done and disc are pressed.

Konami has region locked all their US 360 games so I guess this will be too. PS3 games are all regionless. Not sure about Steam and if it is even coming out next week, it isn't even listed on the site yet.

Sucks for those of you in Europe if the rumors are true. At least PS3s are region free?

Anyhow...the SH Homecoming official site looks like its added a few more diary entries since I last viewed it about a week ago.

Remember Army of Two?
It was set to release mid November, which was overcrowded. So they decided to release it in March and it did much better than it would have if they had it going up against stuff like Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, etc. This game is going up against nothing (unless you count stuff in a few weeks) and has a couple of months until holidays are over. Plus, it is one week away.

I imagine the delay in Europe/Germany is either one of two things, or a little of both. Translation and the german ratings board.

The EU version had already been delayed till November so I was already planning to import, plus it's cheaper that way. If the PS3 version is as good as the 360 version, I'll give it a shot.

I thought the reason Army of Two was delayed b/c the development team felt like it needed more time to polish the game?

Quick update, I'm making some changes to the official thread, instead of 12am EST it'll be around 3am EST, 12pm PST. Just a heads-up and it's coming along nicely.
